Thank you Kevin! I'm following along your process to work on my passion project alone, it's great to have you as my instructor and "BFF" through this journey lol I have started learning UX in a bootcamp since last year in October, I discovered your channel as soon as I decided to dive into UX research specifically. How lucky I am! Thank you! Can't wait to see more videos from you and more cool stuff from our facebook group!

@@zerotoux The thing I love about bootcamp the hands-on practice with community projects! But the more I learn about UX, the more I feel left behind lol Hope you can make a video about how to find a mentor please :P

Hey Kevin! Any recommendations for trying to come up with independent projects for a portfolio before ever even getting the job?

Great question! Well, as an example, I was watching the news about this Florida ballot and decided, "Hmm, that's a terrible design problem!!! Let's make a research study out of it" Voila! hahah So, whatever you notice in everyday life that you feel compelled to research, there's infinite possibilities! If you can do some research that drives changes to something, that'll be impactful. Here are several ways: 1) look for problems in everyday life 2) ask for volunteer work from non-profits 3) look for opportunities in your current employer to do more user-centred design thinking 4) Google some ux prompts

Thank you for this video Kevin,I really like this ^^ ! Your research process are very simple and pertinent. But, I have a remark about the quantitative part. Here, you choose to use software to get data. But, if I have well understand (I don't live in USA so I cannot be sure), the voting process is done by hand normally. Don't you think that voting process on computer and in true are too different to be comparable ?
@zerotoux

Thank you!! Glad it's helpful. Yes, the experience on the computer will be different from doing it in person for sure. I use online to get quant data to see only if there's a difference between voting rates. I also will do an in-person usability test with the ballot so that I can see how people fill them in by hand! So together with both data, I can form a better picture.

Since I'm only an undergrad, how do I get undergrad research positions?
@zerotoux
@zerotoux 5 жыл бұрын
If you can look for undergrad UX internships, try that. While most might be looking for M.S students, try it anyway. Otherwise, try looking for undergrad research labs in HCI, information sciences, psychology, anthropology, sociology as well

Hi Kevin! Question: Can a potential user do both the quantitative survey and the qualitative usability study? Or does can a user only do one? Thanks in advance!
@zerotoux
@zerotoux 4 жыл бұрын
In this example I prefer to keep them separate because there's no point having them do the same task on the same ballots in a survey form and then in-person. Unless of course an online ballot is going to be way different. You can do both still, though! If you run a quant survey and then want to ask them more in-depth about why later on. Surveys are to find out what people think/what's happening, and in-person studies can dig deeper into why!

Should we ask anyone at the mall (for example) or if we asked at the strip club, does the place/time/atmosphere matter when conducting a study? I suppose when it comes to voting it could be anybody, or should there be an attempt to make it representative of the target audience?🤯

These are great questions! The downside of guerilla research is you don't know who to ask, and it'd be awkward to turn people away if they didn't match your criteria. That's why guerilla research is best if you're looking for quick dirty general questions. AND you could also use the signage to say "we're looking for XYZ people" to do this study! As for time place atmosphere, it certainly could, depending on if someone is tired, if it's loud, etc...
