As per what was posted about this by the executive producer, Jason Demarco, the investors pulled the money out of the project. They were only able to finish 1 episode after 5 years. Then they had 3 choices. First choice was to leave the project incomplete and completely cancel it without airing any episodes. Second choice was to just air episode 1 and leave it there. Third choice was to outsource episodes 2-4 and accept the dip in quality. They chose option 3. In addition, as said by Andrew from Otaku Spirit, it seems the anime adaptations for the manga of this author always seem to suffer in one way or another. In this case, they tried to condense Uzumaki, which is a big manga, into just 4 episodes, and to do so, they basically cut all of the buildup to the climax scenes. In other words, the anime is just the punchlines without context. After watching episode 1 myself, I thought that it looked good, but I was unsure if I would continue to watch it since there seemed to be no overall plot, just a bunch of random events involving spirals in the town. I guess I was onto something. It is unfortunate. 6:25 The Studio Eclypse KZbin channel posted an update on the status of their Berserk project. They have contacted the IP owners and are in conversations with them to continue working on the project as an official studio, meaning that, if they get approval, they would have access to more resources than they had to continue the project. In the meantime, they have removed all their Berserk-related videos from the channel, but it is their intention to continue working on it. 7:17 As I mentioned before, episodes 2-4 are done by the same studio, so don't expect the quality to improve. Episode 2 quality is as good as it is going to get, unfortunately. If you are a fan of the original work, your choices are to accept that episode 2 quality is the best you are going to get or to drop the show. I chose the latter since there are too many shows to watch.

The director is also famous which is a former korean anime director of Mappa and founded his own studio which worked in this anime who also worked with JJK S1 . I'm glad its not just me, having done animation myself using both styles (Rotoscoping 3d models and interpolation) The sheer difference in quality is night and day. Especially in the pacing of the second episode, where I think they crammed like 4 short stories to the point that they basically skipped the Jack in the box storyline, relegating it to cheap jumpscares.

I've been hearing this a lot and it's hard to verify but it appears that the studio that worked on the first episode moved on after finishing it. The actual reason it took so long is cause they had to find a studio willing to pick it back up. Don't expect it to improve. The episode 1 studio probably hasn't been involved with this in years.

I'm happy that you are doing good! As for Uzumaki... yeah I was really disappointed that episode 2 was terrible. When I saw the first episode, it was pretty amazing in my opinion with the animation and rotoscoping the animators did, and watching the next episode did the exact opposite is a major letdown to fans of Junji Ito and the horror genre because for crying out loud this is supposed to part of this month of spine-chilling terror and fright.

I hope that Lazarus turns out alright, because earlier this year there was Metallic Rouge, an anime made by Bones, which was founded by ex-Sunrise staff members who worked on Cowboy Bebop and some of Bebop's staff was in Rogue, but that series was kinda forgetable, but Shinichi has done some solid stuff in the last few years, like Carole & Tuesday, so maybe Lazarus will be fine, unless it was affected by Warner/Discovery

@@アキコ2003 I think there are a couple of things to keep in mind regarding the making of this show 1 these studio's are the anywhere the ones who can get talent on board so ofc with limited talent/ staff they need more time to finish a product ,another thing is covid since that can basically push back your production months if not years and another important thing ,which i am not 100% sure of ,but i heard that they finished the show and animated it normally and for some reason they went back and made it rotoscoped and that's why the jarring movement of the 1st episode .I am not saying there excuse the final product ,but factors like this can destroy productions

Aside from the animation, the pacing is fast, the story moves at 100 kph, it was already fast in episode 1 but in episode 2 they increase the pace even more, there was too much happening at once in episode 2. Building anticipation and tension is Junji's biggest charm and they failed at doing that in the anime. The anime adaption is mostly body horror than tension building. When reading the the manga you would brace or prepare yourself before turning the pages because of the unsettling dread or fear of what is on the next page Whoever decided to make this 4 episodes made a bad decision. I understand it's expensive and they can't stretch it out but they should have made it 8-10 episodes at least

I can’t imagine why the hell they would change anything regarding the production after episode 1 looked so good. With only 4 episodes, you’d expect all the episodes to turn out great. It’s a real damn shame.

As a anime only, i definitely see that the episode 2 is definitely not at the level at the episode 1, but it looks not soo bad, im mean is not ex-arm either or nanatsu no taisai.

I guess Hiroshi Nagahama is just way too good for the anime industry. Cant even let him cook a lil bit of his ideas and stuffs. Whats even worse is they put a blacklisted director and bunch of individuals worth none of the pay in his place instead of looking for even a slightly decent guy who knows how to do his job. This is such a tragedy for both horror fans and Junji Ito fans.

I hate to say it because it sounds like my taste sucks, but I was so damn sad about the anime of ice blade. the LN and manga have a really unique and gritty look to it that help set it aside from many others, then they turned into generic looking dogshite in the anime. sometimes things are better left alone.

That beach scene had me so weirded out with the way they were running. In all honesty I'm going to see the episode through to the end. I'd like to hope episodes 3 and 4 are better than 2 but won't be surprised if that's not the case.

They fired the old director and had the audacity to use footage from the first episode to market the show. I feel like the old director should just make a KZbin channel and animate the other episodes himself. I don’t think they’re bringing back the old studio because if they did they would’ve 100% remade the second episode.

That opening scene of the episode where the snail guy enters the room and the jarring mouth movements that seem sped up and janky with the audio already hinted to me things weren't going to be good for the rest of the episode. And boy was I right. There was the low quality pixel-y shot of the bf & gf sitting together in the row houses that looked terrible. Then it just got worse with the running and shortcuts used in the lighthouse scene. Eventually I found myself looking away more and more because I felt second-hand embarrassment at what they were trying to present as a finished product. I'd forgive this stuff if it was a small group of independent animators doing this a minuscule budget. But it wasn't. This had CN/AS, an animation company behind it. And we've seen better stuff come out of non-professional solo animators or very small indie teams here on KZbin with 5 years (same as Uzumaki) and a shoe-string budget. Here's hoping EP2 is the outlier and the other 2 are better. Eeven if they are rushing the stories too fast in my opinion. I don't think it's being given the time it needs to breathe.

I was soooo looking forward to Uzumaki and even though episode 1 failed in some aspects for me (i wasn't spooked and barely unsettled), it was absolutely worth watching for the animation. I'll not be watching any more. What a shame.

Not sure if this a factor here, but: Ep1 was about 22mins (12:30am to 1am when it aired) while Ep2 (and the remaining episodes) are about 30+ mins (12:30am to 1:15am minus ads and whatnot). Maybe the longer runtime caused the studio change/downgrade.

I'd like to think some director looked at the budget greenlighted for Episode 1 and went "WHO ALLOWED THIS MUCH MONEY TO BE USED, TURN IT DOWN" and went way to overboard lol. The show is so good for me that I don't even care if Mario 64 looks more beautiful. The story and the intrigue keeps me hooked. It was funny seemed them run across the beach with 367 ping though lol
