I got to fly Ken Heron’s V-Copter at the SpinUp in November, and I really really impressed with how well it flew. Great test flight Dustin, and thanks for going through all the settings and flight modes. And the battery test was impressive, until it fell out of the sky. They will need to work on that. Overall is seems like a pretty good Drone, Its just a little overpriced for most folks.

Great Review as always. As for this $1200 UAV ... not very impressed with any aspects of it. Too many problems that I can see. Other than the somewhat innovative design, I can't see any other plus side which would make me want to own one of these. Since you saw what happens when it hits 3% battery, be very careful on any kind of range test. Since its max speed is 22mph (at best), I don't think you'll be getting out that far anyway. An interesting test you may want to try BEFORE range test is to see if it can fight its way back against the wind. The new Autel Nano/Nano+ quads have a fatal flaw in this parameter, as many reviewers have shown ... it can't come back against even a moderate wind (reminded me of the Syma X8C, which had the same problem). really excellent video. in all fairness, i have to disagree on one thing tho. the dropping out of the sky was exactly what should have happened. if you follow the on screen prompts it was saying it was trying to do a forced landing but you kept making it fly. then a notice came up (briefly) that it was cutting power because of undervoltage from the battery, so that was correct too to protect the battery and stop you from forcing it to go to 0% and killing the battery. you never want those batteries to go to absolute 0%. in normal circumstances you'd let it do the forced landing to protect both the drone and the battery. so i wouldn't count your 'extreme condition' test to count as a mark against it. imho if used as directed it should be fine. still, enjoyed the video ;)

Good point. For safety sake I do think they should update with a little voltage buffer where the user is locked out of upward throttle at a certain extent. Other companies have implemented this and it works very well to prevent exactly what happened here. 🍻

@@DustinDunnill I disagree about the voltage buffer. If the drone is over water, I'd rather it drop out of the sky once it barely makes over land the safely lower itself into the water. That drop out of the sky *FEATURE* might provide the few seconds necessary to save the drone.

At the moment, Skydio is setting the bar. Their sensors and tracking ability are far and above everyone else. Autel has a healthy lead in the camera realm.

It may seem odd but i actually like that you can override the drone to the extend that it falls out of the sky. I like todays drones assistance systems but i want them that way, assisting me when I WANT it! I dont want a drone wich is patronizing me even if it is for her own protection. I am the pilot and i decide what to do whatever the consequence may be.

Obstacle avoidance must be picking up the drone itself or the vibrations from the tilt motors they had almost the problem with radar on the opsrey when it was first built only in the hover mode but was okay on forward flight had something to do with vibration that was messing up some sensors would give false readings

Great review Dustin, I think the obstacle avoidance isn't needed for this, because if your tracking someone, it should work, hopefully they can fix it, because it sees the ground and stop's. Anyway it's a cool looking drone, Good Job to you Both. 👊💯🤘

I think that the DJI Mini 3 Pro is a much better buy, with roughly the same cost, it's got a much better camera, flies faster & farther, much better obstacle avoidance, & more extra auto features, & better failsafe options. Besides, it's 1/3 the weight with the standard battery, & not much more with the Plus battery, & with the Standard battery, doesn't need FAA registration & Part 107 pilot certification. The Max is great for 360 videos and photos. I use one to make Streetview... But If you try to use it to crop regular 16:9 video from, it's never going to look good

Overall I agree, but the v-copter definitely has a place in the drone world. It just needs substantial tweaks to make it better, right now there is no other like it. No other drone of it's type on the market can do nearly an hour of flight. That by itself deserves some recognition. The blades are positioned high enough above the plane that the camera sits on there should be no need for the software to try and remove it from the footage the way other drone designs are forced to do. This would likely be fine for basic tasks such as inspection of structures (roofing etc). For any who haven't been watching this industry evolve from the early days, DJI wasn't an amazing overnight success in terms of its capabilities (for what DJI charges now, it still isn't IMO).
