I realize it's been a year, but I wanted to lend some credibility to the claim that the Neato picks up everything. Our neato d7 is run in a combination machine shop/computer room with a door between them. We only have him clean the computer room (800 sf) normally, and every time he runs he returns with a dustbin completely full of dirt. But a few times people would leave the door ajar and Neato would wedge himself in the door to clean the machine room (1200 sf) as well. The first time it happened I didn't even realize till I went to dump out his dustbin and found stainless steel pop rivets, hex head bolts, and a whole bunch of other stuff that he had sucked up. there was no damage to any of his components or material. Neato has had a hard life in our classroom and dealt with it admirably. now I'll never buy anything but a neato.

Just bought the i9+ and I’m very happy. Out the box it took all of a few minutes to put together. I will say it was loud at first but once I got into the app and turned the power down it quieted down. Works like a charm and went back to its base on the first run. Love it 😍

Great review. One aspect that I think you should have covered is cleaning time. I have both of these robots. My experience has been that the iRobot takes 3 to 4x as long to clean a given floor as the Neato. With all of the recharging required to vacuum one of my floors, it's not unusual to take four to six hours to vacuum a floor with the iRobot. Neato can do the whole thing in less than an hour on a single charge.

I have a neato XV 21 for like 8 years now and it still works great, the screen doesn't work sometimes but it doesn't affect the vacuum operations. Neato has been making all the other robots look dumb in my opinion, only the lastest Roombas have started to use intelligent mapping and it still falls short. The light radar system that Neato has been using for 10 years now is just superior.

I think the Neato D7 is the better overall value. One thing you didn’t point out that tips the scale for me to the D7 is that with the LIDAR it operates in dark/ at night unlike the S9. This is particularly useful if you want to wake up every morning to freshly cleaned floors via the scheduling feature in the app. The cleanbase is cool and all but the substantial extra cost plus having to buy refill bags just isn’t worth it when considering how large the dustbin on the D7 is.

Denis Lara Yea i here you; but I can’t get over that it still costs more for a worse low power mode; smaller dustbin; and you can’t use it at night. And the Neatos go on sale all the time; they get down below $700 on occasion.

M3 Driver eh, I figured out a solution for those bags. You know how the bags have a hole to take in stuff? Well, why not try to use that same hole for emptying out? Might be a pain, but it could work.

In my experience with a neato, it malfunctioned after one year. First the obstacle error happened even when there was nothing around it. Usually cleaning the lidar sensor got it to work again. After that the screen glitched and was unusable, after that it usually worked for a few minutes untill some error made it stop.

If we go back to the first generation models of each, you'll see Neato was the first to deploy LiDar, whereas the first generation Roomba was a bump-n-go machine. The following generation of the Neato added refinements to its previous models whereas the Roomba added more suction and side sweepers. The Neato didn't finally add side sweepers until recently (2018) and even then its a poor attempt to further enhance their side cleaning ability as the brushes do not protrude beyond the front of the machine like the Roomba does. Just about everything that made the Neato special, Roomba stole and copied into their next generation. The funny thing is iRobot started in 2002 with military contracts, but didn't release their Roomba until 2004. Neato didn't begin until 5 years later as a company but didn't release their first model until 2010. With their innovation and LiDar use, forced Roomba to step up their game adding first generation infrared tech to replace the bump-n-go bumper. But like other limitations of infrared, it had problems with dark rooms, dark colours and then scraped for a camera system. Now in 2020, Neato still uses LiDar which Roomba has yet to copy. This final version, Roomba had finally decided to change their original O shape to the Neato's D shape. That big auto empty dustbin is a neat feature, but we still have to empty the big bin. Whereas the Neato has the BIGGEST bin of all smart robot vacuums since 2005. TBH, the first, second and third generation of the Roomba could not be called a robot as it was an overpriced bump-n-go toy. Even now in 2020 the biggest thing on the Roomba over the Neato is still the price. Which is why I am fine to standby my Neato. My first generation machine still works in 2020 and I've changed out the battery pack, rollers and even the motor once in 15 years.

I stopped after first paragraph. Only because, I've had a Neato Botvac and a Neato Botvac D Series. Both had side spinning brushes; and, they were made many years before 2018. The earlier Neato XV series I believe did not have a side brush, Nor do a couple of their newest models.

The Neato D7 was my first and has so far been my only robotic vacuum and while I think it does a great job in terms of cleaning the floors it can be an absolute pain in the ass to get it consistently going between jobs. If I so much as shift a chair a few inches from across the room from where it's docked it can cause the D7 to be unable to recognize the floor plan and refuse to run. Sometimes nothing in the room has changed at all and it still can't figure out where it's at. Occasionally it'll even kick off from the base, realize it doesn't know where it is, and continue to joy ride around the house looking for the base it was 6 inches from when it started. Every couple months I'll need to have it spend hours remapping the entire house and redo all the zones and no-go lines because of some minor change to the room it's based in. Since this has been my only experience with robotic vacuums I'm unsure whether this is unique to the Neato software or is something all robotic vacuums struggle with but I find it hard to image they'd be as popular as they are if they were as frustrating as my experience with the D7. It would be great if you could add a "practicality" or "software" test to these reviews to try to identify the limits of these vacuums mapping software. That's honestly the most important thing to me as I don't have a room I can designate to a robot that will never change.
@Fireball_Wx
@Fireball_Wx 3 жыл бұрын
Sadly, I think it's a software issue on the d7. I've had mine for about two years now and at the start it was great. Even if it would wiggle the charging base on its own, it would still save and run it's floor plan. Now mine acts the same as yours but I have to run the floor plan every time I let it run. Also alot of people seem to be up in arms over neatos new like the d8-10 adding an exclusive app for those but we haven't seen a software update in quite some time.

I think that LIDAR is the better navigation sensor. In my experience with a Samsung robot vac a camera doesn't work so well in poorly lit areas.
@johannessiipola1267
@johannessiipola1267 5 жыл бұрын
I had the idea the S9 came with a laser sensor in addition to the camera but I checked the marketing materials and they only claim it has a new "3d sensor". Maybe they mean it just uses the camera to 3d map your house? Or maybe there really is a new type of sensor? Too bad iRobot never really tells you the specifics about their navigation.
@danriddick914
@danriddick914 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think the S9 uses an entirely visible light camera - I own an S9 and they even encourage 'training' the robot in different lighting and it still doesn't seem to have much trouble in the dark. I could be wrong and/or you may understand this and mean something different, but I haven't noticed anything too crazy or unexpected with my S9.
@iamdenislara
@iamdenislara 5 жыл бұрын
Just a quick clarification: the Samsung and the Roomba use their cameras differently. Roomba take pictures of things like sofas, bed, tables etc. The Samsung ones use to follow a pattern on the roof. No idea how that works.
@iamdenislara
@iamdenislara 5 жыл бұрын
Johannes Siipola the 3D sensor is to see ahead of the s9 for navigation purposes, the real tool for remember rooms is the camera and obviously the count of wheel turning.
@hadrast
@hadrast 5 жыл бұрын
@@iamdenislara Almost. The smart-navigation Roombas (the ones with cameras) don't rely on wheel-turn counts for navigation because it's too unreliable on soft surfaces like carpets. Instead, they use the dedicated surface sensor for that purpose (like an optical/laser mouse). On the s9 it's in front of the 3rd wheel.

So, I recently switched from the Neato D7 to the Roomba S9+ and I'm finding the change to be a mixed bag. I've got roughly 700 sq ft of room to clean. There are a number of obstacles in terms of chairs and furniture. The D7 would do it in roughly 1.5 hrs. It takes more than double that with the S9+. From the look of things, the S9+ has trouble negotiating a forest of chair legs and tight areas that the D7 could deal with fairly well. I find that the Roomba has some advantages, including cleaning under skirted couches along with the dustbin collector, and it kind of handles fringed carpets better - kind of. The S9+ has a harder time getting up onto the carpets though - it tends to push or fold over loose carpets rather than climbing them. The S9 is also shorter, so it gets under some kickers on appliances better. Overall, I think the Neato D7 does a better job of sucking up dirt (as long as the filter is clean). One aspect that never gets covered is robot maintenance. This is where I think Roomba wins. The Neato D7 had been in a number of times for servicing and finally gave up the ghost. There is no way to repair/replace wear and tear items like wheels but Roomba supplies them. Finally, there should be some further mention on filters. I think only the Dyson has done away with this - and the others need to follow suit. Filters get clogged, need regular monthly replacement (or sooner some times) and decrease overall performance as they get used.

THANK YOU for this video! I bought a D7 a year ago based on the reviews and testing from this channel and i still love it. I previously had a roomba and the thing that i still people complain about that isnt an issue for the Neato's is that the roomba's have a cliff sensor that gets tripped on black carpet patterns (like i have in my house). Ive also heard that for the new roomba's camera to work, there has to be lights on in the room, or at least sufficient sunlight, whereas the LIDAR bots can operate no matter the light conditions. Would it be possible to test a range of "gone for the day" conditions that would add to the complications of using a robot vac? Such as, turning the lights off, black carpet designs, and the dreaded loose charging cord on the ground. tests that other wise challenge a bot to fail and spot all together
@hadrast
@hadrast 5 жыл бұрын
Supposedly, iRobot upgraded their cliff sensors as of the i7 model in order to solve the black carpet problem, so that bit shouldn't be an issue anymore. It would, however, be interesting to see an experiment verifying this (e.g. find a carpet that the 900 series can't get on and try an s9 on it). I've also seen reports that the amount of light that a (smart) Roomba actually needs to navigate is very low (such as night lights or power lights from plugged in electronics), and the post-900 series ones that use training runs should have even more of an advantage on top of that. +1 to the adverse conditions navigation test idea.

One other factor that should be mentioned, the Neato will work on deep carpet. I have bought a Roomba, and a Roborock, and had to return them both because they would barely moved on my deep pile carpet. The Neato on the other hand works with out issue on the deep carpet. I have had some issues with the Neato, mainly it being unable to load it's map of the house which seems to happened every 3 months or so. When it does this you have to delete the old map and then have it do a new special mapping run. So bottom line, if you have deep carpets I think the Neato (and maybe the Shark) are the only vacuums I know that will work.

Looking to replace my D7 at just over 1 year. When it works, it works well... however, the ongoing Navigation Errors of not finding Floor plans -- that are right there in the app. -- are beyond annoying and inconvenient at this point. It's a well know problem with anyone that has one of these as well as by NEATO... they're just not addressing it. NEATO's support is notoriously useless and as many others have stated, they play dumb on this issue when you call them. Time to move on to a Roomba I think.

I've had 4 neatos and even 4th one D3+is starting to make weird noises and it is about 8months old. Its cleaning really grate, a fantastic cleaning machine. I would say if u run it 3 times a week its as good as regular vacuum cleaner. BUT, its a notorious furniture destroyer - say goodbye to chair legs and furniture corners where neato has to take tight turns. Bumper hit will trigger reverse. Charging metal stripes on the back are going to sand away any paint and finish when its backing up. A pumper behind would solve this issue. This is also the reason to why I will move to the round style as soon as neato dies.

I agree, my Neato D7 can get under chairs but it can't get out because one corner of the large square front will always hit a leg and it immediately starts spinning around to try a different direction and hits another leg. Serious buyers regret when combined with the fact that my Ziglint D5 actually cleaned along the walls. The Neato D7 leaves a strip of dust and crumbs almost an inch wide around the entire wall.

Having owned 3 different Roomba botvac's over the years and One Neato I speak from experience. The Neato as an overall product is light years ahead of Irobot. If Neato runs into a navigation issue ( gets lost) it switches to self-navigation until it position on the navigation map. This usually is a matter of under a minute. You can see Neato " look around ( turs slowly left than right) using its forward facing visual camera. Having both camera vision and Lidar make the difference. Cleaning in a darker room is difficult for a Roomba, not even an issue for Neato. Another advantage is Neato Robotics has toll-free 7 days a week tech support if you ever need it and it is free. Neato is far from perfect, but if it isn't the better Botvac why did Roomba copy and go from round robots to D shaped like Neato always has? Just my thoughts.

I wish they'd improve the Neato app. It's finicky to create small no-go areas, and the zone feature only does rectangles (good luck trying to cover any sort of irregular area). You also can't select *multiple* zones to clean at once which is just plain stupid. Would also be nice if they included a real-time view of the cleaning progress on the map like the Roborock.

So how much does the Roomba's Clean Base hold before you have to empty the bag? As you mentioned, the Neeto doesn't have a tiny dustbin like the Roomba so it would be useful to know how often you need to change the Roomba's clean base vs. the Neeto. The clean base seems like an massively expensive solution to a problem that only Roomba has. Given you have to buy bags too what does that do to the cost and convenience factor? Knowing the volume of the clean base vs Neeto dust bin with how often you will need to clean them on an 'average' floor would be very helpful in determining relative convenience and value.

So I have had the D7 for over a year now and I must say I am extremely disappointed with the D7. This is my 3rd Neato first the the XV20, then the Botvan and now the D7. The issues ive had with the D7 is at times it just doesn't want to go out, there is no error or anything it just wont go out when its scheduled to. 2nd is the hardware, I have had to send the D7 vac back twice due to the failure of the VSLAM lidar which is a pain but Neatos service center is FAST, They get my vac in the morning and already shipped it out the same day and its the same vac so they actually repair them and while they are at it they replace other things such as the wheels, filter and brush which is a nice little plus. Lately the D7 has just started to get stuck in the middle of the rooms where there should be no reason it should get stuck. I recently just got the S9+ and I couldn't be happier, the self cleaning doc is a huge plus and game changer and I find the Roomba navigates the rooms better and covers the areas better.

It looks like ecovacs quit building the Deebot self emptying system. They had the d76, d77 and d79. Good units and you could use the base as a vacuum that had multiple attachments. Keep up the good work! I’d still like to see a test between the roomba s9+ and the Deebot if you could find one of the old Deebot d76, d77’s or d79.

I would be interested to know how the Roomba performs on higher pile carpet. I found that the Neato can’t move on my high pile carpet because the squeegee at the back of the cleaning head is angled forwards, and digs in to the pile. If I remove the squeegee the robot performs fine on higher pile but inevitably much worse on hard floors. I wonder if the dual roller system on the Roomba might allow it to run on high pile carpet without modification.

Rodden Shaw The Roomba i7 can maneuver better on high profile carpet and even on a Shag rug. The s9 gets bogged down on High Profile carpet, but can still complete the job without getting stuck. It fails on the Shag rug though.The reason for this is the s9 has high suction and its dual extractors sit lower to the ground adding additional resistance. Lastly since the s9 is D shaped it sometimes gets its corners caught up. If you have medium to low profile carpet both Roombas are fine. So High Profile carpet the i7 the one to get

My S9+ has an odd navigation issue. It exits the base parallel to the walls but once it turns to face the wall it was parallel to at the start, it over-turns. Rather than a 90 degree turn it’s makes a turn that is more like a 100 degree turn. So rather than vacuuming parallel to the walls it vacuums on an angel and does this throughout the vacuum cycle in each room. It doesn’t even correct itself when it gets to a wall which only part of it touches since it is hitting it at a slight angle. When it’s vacuuming along the baseboard it doesn’t run parallel along the baseboard so it misses areas in each room. I had a Neato D7 before the iRobot and it never had an issue like this. I really liked the Neato D7 and feel that it vacuumed more thoroughly than the S9+. I returned it for two reasons 1) because of its height it would get stuck under certain parts of my couch 2) it kept getting stuck going over a modest threshold. But overall it was a solid machine with excellent battery life and vacuumed like a champ. If Neato released an updated vacuum that was shorter than the D7 and had a self-emptying base (I didn’t think I would appreciate not having to deal with emptying out the dust-bin as much as do; 👍🏼 to the gal or guy who came up with that idea.) I would buy the Neato model in a heartbeat. I’d just use the No-Go Lines to avoid the threshold. In regards to my S9’s navigation issue, I contacted iRobot and even though the customer service person after watching video of the machine operating agreed that the machine was vacuuming on an angel, his supervisor said the S9 was operating normally. If that is indeed normal operation, it is not worth the $1300 plus tax price tag in my opinion. Navigation seems like it should be nailed down at this point. It really doesn’t make sense that the machine can’t be configured to vacuum parallel to walls for the most part.

After a year we regret getting the Neato D7. Wish we had gone with the S9. We have a small faux wood floor apartment with few to no cracks, yet the D7 left loads of dirt and debris along all edges, so much so that we had to get a hand vac to pick that up. It also either cleaned even less in soft-touch mode, or shoved tables and lamps around in strong mode, making it just as terrible at cleaning in all modes. We narrowly missed some broken pots and vases. If you look at their tests, there is little to no debris on the edges, and in some the boundary boxes can be seen being shoved around by the Neato. That isn't a good test of edge cleaning. If you've never had another cleaning robot, maybe the Neato would be good for you, but when our *old* iRobot was doing a better job of cleaning than this new D7, it's time to go back to iRobot.

That clean base looks fantastic, but I could not stomach the $1400 price (8/2019). A friend works at Neato and can get me one at a huge discount, so I'll give D7 a try on one floor of my home. I have Roborock S5 and it's mostly wonderful except for the smallish dust bin. Too bad it doesn't warn the user when it gets full - which it often does during a single cleaning cycle. As a lazy person who likes gadgets, after trying the Roborock, I'm sold on robot vacuums. Sooner or later, another manufacturer will come along with a more reasonably priced clean base.

Nice review, as always... I have the D7 and I am super happy with it. However, there are a few things that need improvement. 1. I would tell the D7 to clean a certain area, it would start its "engine", drive out of the charging base, but then STOP and go back to the base!? I had no idea why, so I called tech support, which by the way, is awesome!!! They asked me if I changed anything from when the robot scanned the environment, and I said no, not really. And I haven't. However, It turns out that a big moving box that was sitting 15 feet!!! away was the issue! I am not kidding! That box threw the mapping software off and the robot would not start vacuuming! They need to fix that! I had the same issue with a stool next to the charging base. Once I moved it, all was good. 2. The robot only vacuums one room/area at a time. When it is finished, it will go back to its charging base and let you know, via notification on your phone, that its done. You then have to start from scratch and tell it the next room/area you wish to be vacuumed. I wish I could pick more than one room at a time. 3. When you get the robot and do the initial scan of your house, it vacuums at the same time, which in my opinion, is not necessary. It makes the whole process way slower. I mean, it took hours to scan my house, which was super annoying. YES, I understand, this is a one time only thing. Still, it was annoying as hell (more about this later). Why not just "drive around" and scan the house. Forget about vacuuming at the same time. 4. Now, lets talk about the scanning for a second. The process is pretty straight forward. After you get your robot ready (install app, charge it and what not, I forgot) you tell it to scan/create a new floor plan. Sounds pretty simple, and it is. However, here are a few points to remember and some that need to be "fixed"... a). When I did my first initial scan, I got everything "out of the way". Everything that was movable. I am not just talking about things that might (and will) get the robot stuck. I am talking about chairs, foot stools, stools, rugs, shoes and stuff like that. The reason for that is simple. I want the floor plan to be as "clean" and detailed as possible, if that makes sense. Next time I move into a new place, I am going to create a "naked", "clean" plan and THEN put my furniture it. b). The initial scan will take a while. I am talking about hours. The problem is that once the robot gets stuck while scanning, you have to start from scratch! It should not be this way. Just like it isn't when vacuuming. When you vacuum and the robot gets stuck, unstuck it, press the resume button and it will start doing its thing again. Why can I NOT do this while scanning??? Same goes for running out of battery. When you scan for the first time and the D7 runs out of battery, you have to start all over again, which makes zero sense to me. c). You cannot "re-scan" SPECIFIC rooms or areas only! Its the whole house or nothing. I forgot to move some bins under my bed when I did the initial scan. It will still vacuum there, but the area is not showing up on the map as cleaned. It shows up "grayed-out" and I hate that, ha ha. I wish I could tell it to scan an existing room/area again. I mean, things change sometimes and having to scan the whole house is stupid... I thing that's it for now. : )

WOW! wonder why this is never mentioned by others? Having to start over every time is nuts because you can't even put no-go lines before the first scan is done so it will have issues for sure. I have a D4 coming basically the same vacuum now worried.
@fc1133
@fc1133 4 жыл бұрын
@@archer102356 The only reason I can think of to why no one else brought this up before, might be the fact that most people's houses will get scanned before the battery runs out. I guess. Or maybe they fixed this by now!? I did my initial scan probably over a year ago, and I know that there were a few updates since... I just checked the app and you can add a second floor plan. Maybe I start a scan with 50% battery so it will not make it for sure, and see what happens... Thanks.

If you still have the robot can you confirm if you now can choose to vacuum multiple rooms? It's pretty useless if the person needs to manual tell the robot to go back to vacuum after he finished with 1 room. Also, if he starts from scratch every time the battery runs up when mapping how does it map the entire floor? Wouldn't the battery end near the same spot every time?
