Dan, nice report. Was in Bali back circa 2008. Stayed in a bed and breakfast (B&B) -- I think this was pre-AirB&B -- for $8 a night. While there I rented a bicycle for around a dollar daily. I remember that the rear tire got a flat, so I grabbed a taxi that could ride myself and the bike w/ the flat back to the B&B. When I got back, apologized to the owner for the flat tire and offered to pay for it, but the owner was extremely apologetic to me for the tire going flat. Whole things strange, but thus Bali. I remember the markets around Kuta that sold fresh fruit, dragon fruit especially was amazing. Also spent time in Sanur which had the most amazing fresh fish and other homemade meals like I've ever had in my life. Cost was inconsequential, like five dollars or so. Tried my hands (or feet) at surfing. Didn't get very far, but its definitely worth the efforts. Am glad that prices hadn't gone up that much since I've last there.

Bali became very expensive that’s a fact. The vaccination requirement is still required. On the immigration website but I hear that some airlines don’t check it anymore.

Rental is out of the roof. It's like the Sydney rates so Australians rather spend here as everything else is still cheap. The other factor is the Russian influx. They not only made another price hike but they are actively involved in price increase by acting as middlemen in the property market. So talking about low cost places might be misleading.

I hope you are right about no vaccination requirements. My brother and me are travelling to Indonesia in 2 weeks and we don't have the vaccines. We bought the tickets after hearing that the president announced that ALL Covid restrictions were lifted. I really hope nobody checks the vaccination status anymore

The Indonesian embassy webpage in the USA says that a vaccine is required, and we have them just in case, but they didn't ask when boarding the flight or when we entered the country in Bali going through immigration.

It's really sad that Indonesia continues this self harming anti tourism procedure. I simply am lost for words. Dan, Quiang!!!! I hope you read this. Amazing, I am still here in Bali, 2 years now! I love Ubud, lived there for 3 months. I would love to come meet you guys for lunch or whatever. I had just emailed you about my future plans then 10 minutes later BOOM! there you were. Coincidence, we know better. Wow so cool. My highest recommendation for you is to visit SANUR. Great hotel options by the beach, beautiful walking and you name it, greaf food, live music, spas and shops. The only draw back (minor) is it is on the sunRISE side of the island. The Cangu side is better for a bigger beach and sunrise but is much more crowded and more hustlers (just trying to make a living good people). Gosh, you'll be one month, awesome. When my wife (Malaysian) and I (UK) visited Bali late in 2022 the situation at Denpasar airport was chaotic, confused, disorganised. We were told that no visa was required for less than a 30 day trip and this was confirmed on the Indonesian Government website. However, the Immigration desk, reached after a 90 minute wait told me “ the website was wrong”!! It took 3 hours to get out of the airport. Would I return to Bali? Not until they sort themselves out. Our experience was no way to attract tourists back after the pandemic.

The websites I have seen say Malaysians also need visa. I guess this costs the same as Americans and Europeans. So I will stay away until it is abolished, because not only it is troublesome, it costs too much for a 1 or 2 day trip to an Indonesian island nearby (I am just a ferry away from Indonesia).

IMO still too risky to go to Indonesia since the official travel requirements still require the Covid shot and so airlines may still check. Fortunately we have been to Indonesia twice prior so we can wait until this requirement will be lifted as it has been in most other countries. My heart goes out to all the people who took the shot to travel.

I thought i should just let you know that I used the link you provided to purchase the e visa online prior to flying out to Bali (tomorrow) and they charged me 3 times the normal cost the visa. 1500000 instead of 500000. I have just written to them to ask why. But it might be worth being careful when if you are using this service, or just wait til you arrive and buy it then.

This was directly from the Indonesian Embassy in London after I mentioned that I was looking to invest in property there, I replied asking if this would be reviewed considering it is globally recognised that covid vaccine neither prevents infection or transmission and had a curt responses saying they are maintaining their stance. Hi - years ago they already charged 15.000 rupia on entrance and leaving the country - so this is not new; the thing was resceduled in 2016 because Bal insisted to get fonds out of this money, which they actually did not get at that time. I guess this is just a red tape step to get money for the government in Jakarta. Back in September there was no need for any certificat, no app no nothing - interesting, they changed it again

Return/Onward tickets. Why do they bother since anyone thinking about overstaying can simply by a $10 fake ticket to show. Even having a legit return ticket won’t stop an intended overstay.

Great question Joylight, As you have probably heard we almost never buy round trip tickets. We move forward slow traveling the world. But some countries require a return ticket or onward flight. But the rules change all the time so don't assume what I am about to tell you is true for any airline or country. You have to check the night before. But is they require a return ticker or onward flight, here is what we do. If so, when you try to board your flight going to the country, with a one-way ticket, the airline will ask for proof of a return flight or an onward flight. We handle this three possible ways. If you can find a refundable ticket a few hours before you board your flight, buy that, and cancel after you clear customs at your destination. If not, buy an onward flight from one of the online companies that offer onward flights. They cost about $12 USD. Just Google the words "Onward Flights" and a few will pop up. But if you decide to buy the $12 onward flight, show up at the airport 3 hours early. We had one refused by the airline once. So that brings up the third way. When your $12 onward flight is refused, step out of line, and log on with your computer or smartphone and buy the cheapest flight you can find exiting the country. For example, we search online for the cheapest ticket to a nearby country, leaving that country. Then you lose much less money than you would if you bought a roundtrip ticket to your home country. Skyscanner is the best place to find cheap tickets in our experience. Some countries will also let you buy an onward train or bus ticket to another country which can be even cheaper. Use RometoRio.com to find those. Best, Dan

I suggest just your debit card. Make sure $$ can be withdrawn. Something like Interac or such should be on your card. You can then find out which bank will allow you to make ATM withdrawals. Most banks have reciprocal agreements to waive fees

Bali is different. Bali gets about half the tourists of all of Indonesia, although Bali has 1% of the population.

It sort of reminds me of the status of Quebec in Canada in similar situations. But of course Quebec constitutes at least 20% of the population of Canada, whereas Bali is apparently only 1% of the population of Indonesia. Anyway, I did some googling, and in fact Bali has some regional autonomy.

I am not aware of any special status of Bali. And I have only flown into Bali. I just say "Bali entry requirements" because that is where we went. I am sorry if that was confusing. I have no reason to think that there are seperate entry requirements. Sorry about that.

@@anna_m59 It's nothing to do with sex tourism but simply for the fact people don't want to be married to do these kind of things. Maybe you'll meet your lover there or want to move there with your existing lover and you're not married etc.

Dan please show the real Bali in 2023. A video of “JL. Raya Ubud” with all the traffic needs to mentioned along with a 50 percent hike in prices since 2019. Given the sheer number of travelers coming to Bali along with “overcrowding,” I believe many other places in SEA may be a more suitable alternative going into the future. FYI the Balinese local people are amazing.
