Mike's absolutely spot on, btw. These cities absolutely bend over backwards for these franchises to bring them in / keep them happy. They make all these outrageous demands for state of the art facilities and brand new taxpayer-funded stadiums under the guise that the city is going to reap a whole laundry list of short term and long term economic benefits. For the most part though it's all a fairytale. I've actually read several in-depth articles about the subject, I'm not going to pretend to be an economist but this whole scam has been exposed in the mainstream media at least a half dozen times in the last 10 years or so. And these are not opinion pieces. I'm talking about actual investigative journalism with publicly available facts and figures all laid out in a simple enough way to easily follow and debunk all of the purported benefits that these cities are supposed to receive when they make these horrible deals with major sports franchises.
