Valve adjustment 150cc Go-Kart

Here in this video I am showing you how to adjust the valves on a four stroke motor. The rules and techniques however will apply to any small engine over head valve setup no matter how many cylinders.

I have a 2005 stingray 150cc and it takes for ever to start put a new carb and spark plug and it still takes forever and the timing be off

I don't thinking it is timing I would feel you would have issues in either high rpm or low rpm. Or maybe under a load. but not just starting being the only time noticed. My guess w/o me checking it out would be to start with your compression especially with the year of the machine. If it is getting wear it can cause hard start issues. If you notice it "restarts" after being warm easier I would def lean compression. Your Mag/Coil could be failing also but I would expect it to totally run like crap if that was the issue. Start by checking your compression then go from there. Electric start machine in "general" should be above 100 minimum to run but should be around 170 or so. Hey I seen leaking coming from my Valve cover i ordered a new gasket but I think it was leaking was because one of my exhaust studs fell off causing my exhaust to come off the engine itself I put it back on & noticed the leak just yesterday would anything else be wrong or should I be fine with New gaskets & stud?

hey we have a 150cc hammerhead kart back a few months ago it would not crank up just spin and spin a friend said adjust the valve did it cranks awesome,but now my son kart is just useing up some oil.that would not have anything to adjusting the valve would it?

My crossfire 150r has good spark fresh feul and new plug I just replaced top end all new and never did the valves wen did it but it wont fire or fart pop nothing would this be why.

Well i tried the specs for valve gap that were recommended and it did not work .. found the plaque with the factory specs Gona try to set them to the specs . I was told to manually crank engine to TDC adjust valves to set specs rotate engine again to TDC ( 2nd time ) check one more time to be sure valves stayed at settings...and should start I hope 😊

I have a 1996 hammer head and I'm having some trouble. It will only turn over if I got the spark plugs and out do you have any idea what this could be I replaced the starter, battery,and the solenoid and still the same thing please help.

jeff rountree: my fist guess would have been starter since you fixed that I would say with the plugs out crank it over either by starter or the recoil or nut on crank shaft. Something is binding or a compression not releasing. IE exhaust valves not opening. Did this just start all by itself one day? I hope I can help ya, I know how frustrating something like this can be. I have a scooter 150 cc scooter and I tried 004 top 005 bottom and did not start found a plate on frame specs say 006 top and bottom 008 big difference that what every recommend so I’m going to try the numbers on plate .. someone said to be at TDC make sure valves a closed than adjust ???

Not sure what your requesting. Maybe valve slack adjustment. I wouldn't know that off the top of my head but a Google search with the model number will show u. Hopefully that answers your question.

Probably can't adjust it if it is anything like the one in the video. To set it you have to align the timing marks (usually a circle).. If you've done that and think it still needs to be adjusted better it is probably a loose timing chain/belt whatever it uses. Possibly timing chain tensioner. Not totally sure on your machine. Not sure, check and see if it has chain slack adjusters. Or just a "tired" chain may need new one.

Watching your video you say one valve has to open and other be closed then adjust ?? Thought when your at TDC both should be closed then u adjust ??

Yes I apologise not sure what I was thinking both will be closed at tdc. If you can feel for the push rods to go loose that's where you need to adjust it at. The engine in my cart had tdc marks but I just did it by feel and looked in the spark plug hole to confirm it was up. I hope this response is helpful and not confusing. Yeah, you’d better fix this video for this reason as this is kind of a major boo boo. Valve gapping adjustments are always done at TDC. I am however looking for what Timon to Marks, if any, exist on the gy6 150 or if you just have to use the ole screwdriver down the spark plug hole trick. Thanks.

Ok here we go I found plate stamp on my bike it’s says valve clearance (top) 0.06 mm (bottom exhaust) 0.08 mm now gauges I have go like this. On inch side it has .006-.008. On one blade and still in inches on separate blade I have .008-0.10 .. On metric side blade starts at .102-.152 go up to .635-.686 so the Chinese plate is wrong a few missed placed ( 0’s ) here’s a kicker the spark plug gap is between 0.6 to 0.8 went to four auto parts and they don’t know either .. can you help see what is actual valve # ‘s are it’s gy6 150 cc .. my last resort will be to take it to a shop 😝

I would say they probably meant .oo6 and .008 If it were me I would try that and roll the engine over by hand to confirm no issues (just in case the size difference does make a difference) I doubt it would even if I was incorrect about using a smaller gap. If everything rolled over smoothly by hand I would reassemble and test it out. That's what I would do. Not sure where else to steer you. Not sure where your located but here in Muskegon, Michigan we have a Japanese motor sale and service place called metric motorsports. Maybe you have one of them where you live, or even call that shop and ask them. I hate I don't have a better answer for you though. Keep me in the loop. Zachary

Without checking it out my first guess would be the engine is "tired" How old is the engine? Did this happen all the sudden? Is the oil over filled? Smokes even at idle? Sorry for the delay in my response, hope we can figure it out. DIY-Zac

I’m unsure how old the engine is but I know that the rings are good and it has good compression, and it only smokes black at full throttle when it starts to die and crackle out

@@reesetrescott3731 I am at a loss without checking it out myself. Black smoke means oil is some how related, whether that is over filled or sideways for too long or rings, valve guides. Not sure what to say without checking it out myself. Sorry I can't be of more help though. DIY-Zac

@@reesetrescott3731 Small possibility, I don't think it would cause black smoke though. There's a lot of things I would need to know or try myself to have an idea. Doesn't make sense to be running then without anything happening it just starts smoking black.
