Steam’s unwavering success has helped turn Valve into a senior resort community for computer science nerds, where game developers go to live out their final years surrounded by fantastic amenities, tinkering and unsupervised. At least developers there aren’t getting laid off - and I mean that sincerely. Still, I miss the games that Valve devoured. I have to wonder if the developers there do, too.

You forgot Day of Defeat. The best WW2 mod ever made. Valve hired all the developers, released DoD Source (not so good as the mods imo), but then abandoned it. Sad 😢

If I were to lose my steam library I'd do everything in my power to pirate every single game I've purchased over the years. It is something to consider though seeing as Sony, Nintendo, and Ubisoft have already dipped their toes in. I believe GOG has no DRM and have started to consider purchasing there when possible. Digital storefronts are convenient, but not that great for gaming in the long run.

While it's true that Steam is in itself a form of DRM it's a very lax one by default, so some indie devs release their games in such a way that if you delete the Steam-related files from the game's folder the game will still run just fine without starting the client. But there's no real list of which games are essentially DRM-free, or at least not as far as I'm aware, you have to just fish around the forums to find out. Also Valve has stated in the past that if they ever go out of business and have to shut down Steam they'll give us a heads up of at least a month so we can download and save everything and then release an official offline patch that should work for any game without any extra DRM. But yeah, GOG is a lot more straight forward, they just give you the option of downloading a DRM-free installer instead of using their client. Even then my GOG library is but a fraction of my Steam library, I blame laziness and being way too used to all the quality of life features that Steam has (their controller support is decades ahead of anything else on PC, or even consoles, for example).

I personally need a left 4 dead 3. I still play left 4 dead 2 but wish their was a third one. Back for Blood which I played quite a bit is not a spiritual successor to L4D.

Weird take on Valve. They won't pivot from Steam, seeing as literally _every_ decision they've made over the last two decades has been to promote the platform. _Every_ game they've made, _every_ piece of hardware, even the focus on making Linux viable for games - it's _all_ in service of Steam. So saying "what if they pivot from Steam?" makes no sense whatsoever. They are an odd bunch, and I do wish they would focus on making games for the sake of games, but they're not insane. Steam is the golden goose and that's the one thing they don't mess around with.

Steam is the worst thing that happened to Valve. But I'm glad Valve are the ones who did it first, not other like EA or Poopysoft.

Valve pivot from steam? That’s not a good take. Not 100% sure what this videos is trying to accomplish but if steam goes away a lot of people would be devastated. I do like a lot of the videos you guys create but this video IS NOT it
