My grandmother lived across the hall from Mila when I was a young boy. (1960’s)This was on Melrose Ave across from what is now the design center. The building still exists, but was turned into offices. She was quite a unique person and sold antiques out of her apartment. She taught me to make perfume from roses. We used to play with the strange items she sold. I remember she had several cats she would rescue. My grandmother and her were very good friends. I didn’t realize anyone knew of her until I saw your video. Nice that you remember her and let people know of her past. Thank you!

I met her in the early 90"s when she was living on McFadden in a empty apartment complex behind a boarded -up house . My best friend Lloyd Holt said that we should meet because you two are so similar in personality. We hit it off like crazy and we travelled around the town for many years until I moved her into the upstairs apartment by the McDonald's near the Vista . She had people coming to her door from around the world looking for the Godmother of Goth Vampira . I moved to North Hollywood in 2003 to help manage Gilbert Costumes for the owner James Albright. Mila knew my cousin Jimmy, I don't know that they were that close but she sure gave interviews about him after his death and rise in fame and was always respectful of him, the family and his memory. She was interesting and I hope now she's at peace, perhaps her and Jimmy are having a laugh over drinks looking down onto all of us going around on this crazy world we're living in.

A lot of people would prefer to die in comfort and privacy in their own home, with their pets, than in a hospital surrounded by strangers poking tubes and needles in them! I thought Maila's death was rather nice, certainly the kind I'd like.

As you mentioned in this video, Nurmi’s Vampira persona was “borrowed” from a couple different sources. It was pretty ballsy for her to get ruffled feathers over Elvira, but I’m not surprised. Another fun watch, Scott. We need more. Take care man, and be safe out there.

Yes, kind of ironic Maila pointed the finger at Elvira for copyright, when Vampira was closely modelled on Morticia from the Addams Family! That said, context is all and Vampira had a point because she was invented specifically to perform the TV continuity role of introducing horror movies. So it wasn't only the image but also the TV performance/role that Elvira copied. I think it can be very hard to legally prove infringement/theft of an idea.

I encourage everyone who's a fan of Maila/Vampira to read the bio written by her niece Sandra Niemi, "Glamour Ghoul: The Passions and Pain of the Real Vampira, Maila Nurmi ". Maila did have a son with Welles, and (spoiler alert) Sandra and her daughter have spoken with him; this is in the book along with a photo of Maila's son. Imagine finding out your biological parents are Vampira and Orson Welles! 11:11 I believe that's Sandra in the white sweater; Dana Gould is facing us with the blue tie. Dana was a close friend of Maila's during her final years. If Scott could interview Sandra, that'd be great!

I just learnt that she wanted to help create a new Elvira series in the 1980s and still she wasn't given creative liscence over who she chose to play her!!!! Is it his not so riddiculous!!! How frustrating that must have been to her, when she left her own project as the "other producer's chose a comedic actor . She knew who she wanted to play herself. Kudos to her 🔱💓💓

I just read that too, it's an interesting tale. Same old story - a load of younger producers jumped on her idea/creation and took charge, showing her no respect. It's a story as old as time, sadly. Maila had actually chosen a black actress to play Vampira, which was a brave choice for the times.

I thought it was quite a nice ending actually. She was 85 and lived a full, exciting life, had three marriages, many friends and fans, and earned a place in TV history. She died peacefully in her lovely cottage, on her sofa, of old age, with her cat and dog by her side. According to her friends she was in good health to the end - they were amazed she'd had a heart attack. Very lovely, dignified funeral too. That we should all be so lucky to have such an ending!

I talked a stunt lady who did a Horror con with her back in the early 90's, she said Vampira was living in someone's basement and was broke, she thought that was sad because she had grown up watching her and considered her an icon!.

I was too young to be hip to Vampira. It was in 1963 I tuned in late night KCOP to 'Jeepers Creepers'. Then a year later 'Jeepers' left the show and 'Ghoulita' (a Vampira clone) replaced him.

Always enjoy Scott’s film pieces. While I believe Maila about John Gilmore contrived relationship, I think Dean had an intense albeit, short relationship with Liz Sheridan. I have email from Bill Bast who was perhaps Dean’s best friend. Bill concedes that Dean and Liz were together albeit a short time including a 1952 Thanksgiving trip by Dean, Bast and Liz to Dean’s uncle’s farm. Dean was also friends with Martin Landau in New York and there is photographic evidence of Landau and Dean together taking photos outside Dean’s apartment, making a film, hanging out at MOMA with other friends and just hanging out with their mutual friends including Dean’s NY girlfriend Barbara Glenn.
