He took off from the lights pretty quick, and depending on how big the A pillar is, the van may have just turned into the turn at the right point to not see it until he was about to hit it. I feel a lot of people in the comments are forgetting that drivers don't usually sit in the centre of their windscreen, it's pretty obvious the van was in his pillar blind spot perfectly until it was right in front of him, and you hear him lift off the accelerator about 0.3-0.5 seconds after the van becomes visible (to the driver, not the dashcam) Yes he takes off quick, but he's not as unaware a driver as the clip makes him appear at first.

I hear a clutch kick, while yes he technically let off the throttle, he was doing so while still attempting to go faster. There was 0 evasive action and you can tell the van isn't stopping for the light from the 0:04, the instant it starts turning just looking at the body language of the van there is no brake being applied and they have no intent of slowing down. At many points this would have been visible to the cam owners perspective if they cared to look. I don't take issue with taking off quick either, but if you intend to do that, assess all points of ingress to the intersection before applying throttle.
@Venetii_
@Venetii_ 2 жыл бұрын
I would really recommend pinning this comment, this isn't a normal intersection where the red light runner is clearly in view, the driver could have easily been sat in a way to have no view of the van. The amount of people putting even some blame on the DCO is ludicrous, when they had every right to drive the way they did (most people wouldn't, but they had a green light) and when the van hadn't even started turning when the light went green. This is 100% the van's fault, severity could've been limited with different driving from the DCO but wouldn't have happened at all if you don't run the red, especially that late.

For all of you that are bagging the dash cam owner, as a motorcycle rider & Beetle driver I can tell you that A pillar vision obstruction is a big thing. While the dash cam video gives you a motorcyclist style unobstructed view, the driver is sitting to the right of the camera & the van was probably hidden by his A pillar for most of the time. There's been plenty of times where I've had close calls with pedestrians at crossings in the Beetle because their sideways movement & my forward movement have been at a pace where they're constantly hidden behind my A pillar until the last seconds. And, while we have laws on speed limits, there's no legislation on how quickly you can accelerate to the speed limit. If we all treated traffic lights a bit like the starting grid at Bathurst there'd be less congestion & some gronks like the van driver might have second thoughts before blowing through a red light.

And, without fail, they give me the S.M.I.D.S.Y. response, "Sorry mate, I didn't see you", which is usually true. While on the bike I'm more alert to these types of incidents & whenever it happens I usually can't see the face of the driver because their A pillar is in the way. Pause it around the 6 second mark. Draw a line from the van to the right side pillar. Chances are the van is in that pillar blind spot. As rev head fwit races off the van stays in that spot for a second. Add into that situation loud music and POSSIBLY looking away because they thought they had a clear run. They both got what they deserved. Fate lined them up perfectly. Edit : Also, if you pause around the 8 second mark just as they collide, then use the comma and period keys to move back and forward a frame at a time, there's something with a white edge that looks like it has a screen. There's one frame where it reflects on the windscreen. Keep going a few more frames forward and you can see a black smartphone like object bounce off the instrument panel cowl.
