I’ve been in situations where others haven’t been so considerate of me or others around them-and some have been, well, outright ‘jerks’. That made me think about what I can do to be a good guest which led me to do this video about how to basically not to be a jerk. I get it that it’s not always intentional, but I thought I’d share some thoughts on how to be a good guest when parking your van. Because, whether you're at a friend's driveway, a public parking lot, a campground, or public land, you want to be welcome and welcomed back. If you haven’t already, please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, SHARE and hit the BELL to continue to receive content like this. Hope to see you next Saturday!

There is no substitute for being the example. I was at a Walmart and the RV’ers threw their trash everywhere and left their carts all over the place. I grabbed a cart and garbage bag and picked up their messes and returned over thirty carts to the corals. The next morning carts were put away and there was no garbage. I am in a public park today. I picked up all of the garbage. People are watching. Be the example. It only takes a few minutes and you are there for hours! SnS’s!

Walking through others campsites just surprised me. I try to tell kids nicely not to do it, mostly because it does make the dogs bark. One father came over to tell me that it wasn’t my place to discipline his kid. I think it was one of the first things I learned as a kid that a campsite is almost like your backyard. You don’t go in unless you are invited.

I am glad that you created a video about behavior. In the last year, while camping on BLM land in Utah, 4 groups have wanted to set up camp very close to me. I was able to ask them to look for a different spot and they did. Then a couple decided to park their large truck 30 feet away from my rig and when I asked them to park further away, they became angry, insulted me and didn't bulge. I went to the ranger's office near by and when I told a ranger, he was disheartened, he said that people started crowding other campers in the last few years and that they didn't know what to do about it. The BLM ethics about camping/hiking/climbing says that crowding campers is absolutely wrong. Respectful and ethical behavior is becoming a thing of the past, entitlement is replacing all that is good about wilderness camping. It is heart braking.

@@LadyBugout I agree, the BLM will have to step in with laws to protect the privacy and safety of campers. Another thing happened 2 months ago, a man saw me from about 50 feet of where I was camping, I was on a lower ledge by a cliff, and drove his ATV to my campsite. I knew that he was going to attack me by his body language and his strange greeting. I took out my 50 pound labradoodle from the back of my Tacoma and his barking scared the man away. Yeah dogs!

Some Public lands are really crowded now, but it is best to be curtius and ask if you are in a situation where there are few options and you have to use a "fire ring " closer than 50' to the adjacent camp. If you have a reason you set up away from others and someone tries to crowd in, inform them that you set up camp away from others because... you are trying to train an unruly rescue dog.... have a colicky, or teething baby...you snore really loudly... or in my case I was self isolating because of recent flu exposure.

In Australia one of the most annoying issues when free camping is parking too close to your neighbours. If there is plenty of space, park away from the other campers. Once at a free camp, someone parked in the middle of the night between me and the lake front. They were practically parked on a side walk size stretch of land, not only blocking my view but also access to the water. They could have parked anywhere in an area the size of two football fields. Thankfully I was leaving that day, but it was a very confrontational act. Thanks Dee for reminding everyone to be respectful.

Thanks good advice. One thing that I have found recently is that fire wood shouldn't be transported into or out of an area. Recently I camped in the Siskiyou-Shasta NF and there was a large area that had Port Orford Red Ceder disease. The ranger said it came from Oregon through firwood.

I think we need to mention pets. I know people love their animals but the key word is YOUR ANIMAL. Leash them if needed, keep them at your location, pick up their waist, ask to share them if friendly. My biggest pet peeve is for clearly designated signs that say “ No pets allowed “ and not only is that rule broken but the pet is off leash. Living in Oregon hiking various trails I have been approached by various dogs unleashed no owner in sight. I have never been bitten but was extremely uncomfortable. I remember being at the Rhododendron park in Eugene. I was in an area photographing a flower in an area absolutely no dogs allowed. A huge pit bull approached me and sat down on my feet. His name was pork chop and he was friendly BUT I DIDNT KNOW THAT. He weighed 80 pounds his head was enormous. The owner gets to me and says he’s friendly I’m sorry. I told him he is an animal you just don’t know what his reaction will be to everyone. I was terrified and had to beat that fear way down so he would not sense anything uncomfortable in me. Also no pets were to be in this sanctuary for vulnerable plant life. He apologized but again people please note everyone is not a pet person. Be blessed all.

Ive been on the road for years now. One of the number one rules of this is DONT LIVE WHERE YOU SLEEP. Sleeping spots are for sleeping, and everything else go do somewhere else (unless you're at a campground). So many ppl will park somewhere like a walmart and then not end up moving for days. To make it worse they will put out awnings and chairs out like they live there. Im the type that minds my business, but these ppl ruin spots for everyone. Its getting so hard to be alone because as soon as someone sees you somewhere, others will flock to be right on top of you. They dont want the next campsite they want YOUR campsite.

It’s never a bad thing for any of us to hear these again. I always leave a spot better than I found it. I found where it was needed most was Cracker Barrels in larger cities. I might pick up a full large trash bag there. If their dumpsters were locked up, I would inform a staff member that I’d cleaned up all around where I was packed and left the bag near the dumpster surround so that it would get taken care of and not left out for critters to make a mess. I REALLY wish that more people could see this video because even though it should be common sense… a lot of people REALLY need to learn this. I have been a vehicle dweller since 2020 and nothing annoys me more than when people are careless about their whereabouts and purposely do weird sh!t that would mess things up for everyone else. I was boondocking at a park in Long Beach, California for a few nights and another vehicle dweller pulled up in the same location and started dumping all of her trash and household appliances that she didn’t want… near a tree at the park. When confronted about it, she acted as if I was wrong for calling her out. That's all good advice to everyone, regardless of their personal circumstances (down-on-their-luck, etc) -- I wish I had thought more about it when I was younger. A good guest is usually welcome, since people are evolved to be social animals. Unfortunately, some people are stuck in early adolescent stage long past its expiration date, so we do have a lot of bad examples. But a wanderer who lived by these "rules" would be welcome to talk with me about "visiting" overnight in the block-long parking area where I live. Just look for the cars covered in undisturbed pine needles, with no bags of trash left outside, no awnings unfurled.

Most people with an ounce of competence and an ounce of pride, can accomplish their mission within the restrictions of all laws, rules, customs, and etiquette. I wish more of them would do so, but I also recognize that some people are pigs, some are incompetent, some have no sense of pride, and some simply will follow only their own rules unless you have the power to take away their money or put them behind bars. Some are also in much more marginal circumstances, and actually lack the abilities and resources to do things which we might assumem are easy for everyone. The fact that I can take the high road and still pull off my desired result, doesn't mean that everyone can. Moving my camp 30 miles costs me 1/2 gallon of gas and an enjoyable ride, while for someone else, it might risk breaking a rig that is barely if at all roadworthy, and would send a week of their food money through the gas pump nozzle. Some rules are stupid and unnecessary, especially if the people breaking them are otherwise doing things well. This leads to many reasonable people habitually breaking certain rules. A prime example of this is that there are certain places where the 14-day rule is openly broken by extremely large numbers of people, as if where they are camping is a version of an LTVA which is just free of charge. This spring, I stayed in one such place for 3 nights in the off season, not knowing whether I'd find it trashed after a winter of abuse. In fact, it was spotless, except for rock-art decorations and other minor site improvements. Would the world actually be a better place if heavy-handed enforcement made 50,000 people in each of 3 such places swap locations in a rotating pattern every 14 days? Or would it just create the environmental damage of 150,000 unnecessary moves of over 25 miles each, every 14 days or less? Personally, I've never broken the 14-day rule, but I also would never report someone who does so in a responsible manner, where following the rules would make the world a worse place than by responsibly breaking the rules.. I'm not making excuses for lazy pigs, or someone who hogs a prime camping spot far beyond the limits of the rules. But I'm happy to look the other way, when the "unofficial rules" in specific places, make more sense than the official rules. I consider the days where it was reasonable to spend a night in a store parking lot, even a particular Wal-Mart which allows it, to be over. Each night spent there by anyone, hastens the day when nobody can stay there, and I neither want to be part of causing that, nor do I need to. If I can't make it to public lands, a rest area, a truck stop with overnight car parking, or some similar place, the fault for that lies on me. I then would rather stealth park anywhere BUT the sorts of places which are causing cities and towns to clamp down on stores who lean toward turning their parking lots into campgrounds when not zoned for that. But a casino parking lot which allows it, especially if on the land of a tribal nation, now I'm all over that. Count me in for a breakfast buffet there, if they don't give me the knock overnight!
@LadyBugout

I agree. It’s more a matter of respect and allowing others to continue to enjoy an area too. I have seen others, though, crowd others out or overstay so as others can’t enjoy a place. I guess that is why the rules are there to begin with. But, I agree if nobody else if wanting to camp in an area, I’d just ask a ranger to double check-I think most would say it’s ok in that case.

Thank you for another great video! Most people I met while camping are respectful, but I don't like when other campers arrive in the middle of the night and make a huge mess, use strong lights and are very loud setting up their camp! Of course there are worse crimes; but, littering is the small offense that enrages me the most! It's so avoidable. When people get a drive through meal and chuck all the packaging out, sometimes on the move, I'm the guy that will pick it up, catch them at the next junction and post it back through their window with a cheery "I think you dropped something." If there's room in your car when you want to buy and eat it, there's room afterwards for the packaging, You can even use the bag it came in as a temporary rubbish-bag and get rid of it properly later. The worst is when people drop it in a car park, service area, camp ground or similar, yet you can see actual litter-bins not 20-yards away! In summary, like your good self, one would like to think videos like these aren't/shouldn't be necessary; but, we all know of people that should be forced to watch them... Yet another great YT, thank you.
@LadyBugout
@LadyBugout Ай бұрын
That chucking out the car window is something that is so avoidable. As for the bins-the only thing I can think of is that maybe sometimes animals rummaging through them may be to blame for the garbage around obvious bins-but we can never be sure 😛

@mariamary65 Ай бұрын
Very good advice. Respect does go a long way. As a rule, wherever I am, I try to pick up 10 pieces of rubbish when walking. Doesn't sound like much, but imagine if everyone did this. Feeding wildlife is a big one. People just don't realise the harm they are doing. Particularly feeding them human food such a bread. Here in South Australia you will often have kangaroos, wallabies and potaroos come near your camp and the temptation to interact with them is big, but it is best to leave them alone and not encourage them to come near your site.

In camping grounds, I had to tell someone to extinguish her fire because it was 11 pm. She said she didn't know there was a rule. The smoke was also coming in my camper. I saw some kids run around on my camp space, parents did nothing. I told someone to keep his music down, he started yelling at me. I had two guys talk well into the night 10 feet from my camp spot keeping me awake. Some people have no awareness of other people.

Well at least in every single campground I’ve been in my 40+ years of camping you can keep your fire going and talking just not loud almost whispering even after 10 pm until you desire to hunker down. Sorry to say but maybe you’re too over sensitive, others have rights too and legal campfires are part of the camping experience, is also rude to expect others to obey by your personal rules is called coexisting.

Lots of good advice. As for the noise factor, I have not had too many problems, but I usually use earplugs when I sleep if I am close to other campers. I am in Cumberland Maryland right now. I just bought a new Jeep and was in a hurry to try it on a road trip. I have been gone from MI for about a week but have not camped yet-too much extreme heat and too many mosquitos for SUV camping even when using screens and usb fans. Nevertheless, I always enjoy being on the road, and I hope you are at someplace where you can stay cool. I will be mindful of your advice and try not to be a Dick.

A few other points - keep your animals leashed and controlled - harassing other campers and wildlife is uncool. Pick up after them too! Bears may poop in the woods, but your dog shouldn’t. Keep music off by preference, but keep it quiet if you must have The Byrds and not the birds. And do NOT take it hiking or really, anywhere other than your campsite.

And yes to the not walking through campsites. I was “SUV RVing” so no tent. I’m sitting in a camp chair, next to my SUV, so obviously using the site and people were just wandering through like it was a shortcut and being sooooo indignant at being asked to not walk through my clearly in-use site.

It's a shame that common sense isn't so common anymore. I took Monty out on my first adventure today, packed with most of my camping gear. I didn't really need it all for a day trip, but I wanted to see what fit. I went to see The Historic Alexandra Lodge fundraiser for restoration, which had a tour, an old car show, local crafts and, the big draw for me, oddities collected by a local paranormal group. I did a psychometric reading on a WWII helmet and will be joining them on a ghost hunt at the lodge in November. Halfway there, I pulled over in a big area on the side of the highway to use my Luggable Loo. I could actually sit without hitting my head. But 10 cars passed in a bunch, and I don't have window covers, so I couldn't go. As interesting as it was to see the lodge, it was scorching hot, 35 C (95 F), so I was happy to get back into the air conditioning in my Pontiac Montana and back home to my little air conditioned house. There have been multiple wildfires in my area, so I didn't want to leave my cats alone. I was so tired, I stopped at a rest stop for awhile and parked under a tree. When I got home, I stripped down to my underwear and went to bed. If I didn't have pets, I would've just found a cool place and slept in Monty, but it was just too hot. You are an inspiration. Keep up the good work. Jon in rural BC, Canada

This was very helpful to me. My time in wilderness has all occurred in the last few years - I'm learning. So if you're in dispersed camping and an area has some campers, how close is too close? I saw someone comment 30 feet as close - but I've seen some campsites where each numbered site is less than 30' wide. Is there a standard, a rule of thumb if I arrive somewhere and see campers scattered around?

This is a great video, you highlighted on so many good points. This topic made me think of modern day awareness of simple and basic manners.....its almost non existent. Something that I noticed in the past several years is that alot of younger individuals do not respect adults or the elderly and also some faamily members do not respect other family members time. Showing up unannounced or announcing that you are coming over in two seconds is not always appropriate. Even doing certain things in the home without first asking is rude...even if you are family. Im not sure if anyone else who reads this will happen to be a person who is a step-parent and can sort of relate. But, please know that you matter and deserve to be treated with respect. So many times I have to assert myself in way to drive this point home. Do not allow anyone to treat you like a door mat just because you are the step-parent and bring a different dynamic to the family structure.
@LadyBugout
