Great tips and it is so true. When the pandemic hit and I was given a severence package and my retirement from my job after 32 years, it was a blessing in disguise. My wife and I discovered we could live and survive on a mere fraction of what our monthly income previously was. It’s been four years now that I’ve been home and we haven’t eaten restaurant food in those four years. The bonus is I also lost nearly 45 pounds and 3 pant sizes just by eliminating that alone. Plus I can replicate every dish we loved eating out and it’s actually better. We are very purposeful in spending and saving. We set aside $200 a month for our holiday spending which easily gives us $1200 each in cash to spend at Christmas. (No we don’t spend all of it but the rest goes towards a really great long vacation at the beach- all paid in cash) We don’t drink soda.. and 2 huge cases of water only costs us under $14 twice a month. We don’t smoke and we chose to have a membership to our local zoo and Nature Centers which is our entertainment and exercise. So there’s no cost to us anytime we want to visit and we can go as much as we like. We garden, we go outside and enjoy nature and we geocache for fun. All free. I’m grateful for the time I have at home with my wife… she started showing signs of dementia right when the pandemic hit, so being here with her has been truly a blessing and we want for nothing except more quality time together. You truly can save a ton of money by little things being eliminated that you won’t even miss.

Great tips 👍 One of mine: Dr Bronner’s Sal Suds. This all natural concentrated cleaner is vegan, scent-free and can be used for dishes, daily cleaning of surfaces, laundry, bathing, and more. I love this stuff. A 32oz bottle is only $15. and lasts me five months. You dilute it for many uses; for laundry you use just a tiny bit per load full strength. All the “recipes” for use are on the label. 10/10 🌿

When I was living in my Ford Explorer, I was spending $600 a month on food and $200 on gas. I’m in subsidized housing and can live on $150 food & $25 gas. Also I learned how to wash clothes by hand. Fresh, unprocessed food, repairing clothes… I’m investing $400 a month in REITs.

although REITS are a good investment, they are not a good thing for the people that are trying to live in rental properties. I refuse to invest in them. Poorly built, expensive to live in, and no customer service. All you get when you talk to management is "that is company policy" and a 10 page lease agreement that has NO benefits to the renter. I don't know how anyone can rent, and support REITS.

Better to invest in the S&P 500 ETF, a Dividend producing ETF, a GROWTH ETF and a Bond ETF. Better diversification involves less risk and optimal returns- avg 10% annually plus compound interest. My REITS have lost a lot this year. Too risky.

One tip that I do that helps with impulse buys and keeps grocery costs down is I create a food plan/budget and only shop once a week...and I do grocery pick-up so I don't even step in the store! The only time we splurge is on payday we go to the grocery store and pick food from the hotbar/salad bar...healthier and less expensive than drive-thru fast food!

@@belindaknowles7440 I know that what they're saying would be better for me, but I'm right there with you. I am so picky about that, along with meat, and unfortunately am a weirdo that just really likes grocery shopping lol Luckily it's just my elderly mother and I so we don't go too crazy. It's definitely an area I need to reel in though.

Good reminders! A lot of people have monthly subscriptions that they are not even aware of or know about but don’t utilize. I spent a year and a half double paying for a subscription because they were linked to different emails and different credit cards. I finally realized it and cancelled one.

@@silentstorm7263 My mother lives with me and about 7 years ago, we realized we NEVER used our TV. Both of us do all of our lazy entertainment on a tablet (her) and a desktop computer (me). We not only cut cable, we don't even own a TV. Now, don't get me wrong, we do plenty of mindless vegetating in front of our electronics...we just realized a TV was no longer something that worked for us.

Did you know that there are now apps and also programs on some credit cards that help you cancel those rogue subscriptions? If you do a Google, you can find quite a few, and check with the card it's coming from to see if they have such a thing.

Good tips! I am always very frugal. I practically never go out to eat and I'm not much of a clothes buyer. My entertainment is usually KZbin and a subcription to PBS for $5/mo. When I'm at my home base(friend's property), I only drive once a week for groceries and things to save on gas money. I also use my local library to check out a computer kit(like you would a book) so I can have use of the wifi hotspot. Thanks for sharing this video with us today, take care now.

Well done Dee! My immigrant parents were relentless in saving money. Luckily, that rubbed off on me to the extent where I still look at E-fliers for grocery specials. There’s a huge amount of savings to be had when you’re feeding a family of four. As for the other ‘nickel and dime’ items, they too add up quickly. Alcohol, tobacco, and fuel is very expensive here (heavily taxed) so reducing or eliminating them is a big plus for the pocket book. Don’t even get me started on Uber Eats… (Apologies to those who deliver, my immigrant mom would be rolling in her grave)

These are good ideas, but you haven’t mentioned unplanned, but unavoidable, expenses. Your dog gets sick. Or you get sick. Or you drive over a rock and damage your tire. These things happen. And there goes your savings. Those of us living on social security mainly gave up clothes shopping years ago. I wear crocs almost exclusively. A winter pair and a summer pair. They usually last 2 years. I find that fewer, better clothes last longer. I try to do laundry once a week and have everything fit in one load. That’s how many clothes I have. And entertainment is a kindle unlimited subscription. I eat out at the Tacobell $menu; lunch costs less than $3.

100% agree with Vickie’s subscriptions comment! My friend found several she didn’t even know about by looking in her iPhone settings. You can also save by getting a petrol/gas price watching app. Often there’s a huge difference in prices! And if you’re really dedicated you can save quite a bit by switching between phone providers & taking advantage of their introductory offers.

Your report on the leaks was well researched, practical, and eye opening. Also, over the years you have presented many excellent ideas about budget travel. I would like to see you present a compendium of your top travel budget ideas, sort of a frugal traveler Lady Bugout episode(s). Maybe you have already done this and I have missed it. As an aside, I have been here in India for five weeks going from beach town to beach town. I am living well and spending about 50 dollars per day for lodging, food, alcohol, transportation, etc. I had not thought about the money I am saving on food by not eating at home. Your mention of 15 dollars per day for food is about right for me since I eat in restaurants at least twice per week when I am home. Deducting this 15 dollars per day while I travel, I am actually spending 35 dollars per day. I will be here another five weeks so my savings on food would almost cancel my 1400 dollar flight which comes out to 20 dollars per day over 70 days. If you have any tips on how to get the price of this trip down to zero, let me know.

Money tips are always helpful, although I’ve been very low income and working with a no frills budget for years. Starting full time vanlife, I’ve learned that gas station stops are a danger zone: maybe I do need some coffee, but I DONT need the snacks or the premade food at the truck stop! My other “danger zone” is the first of the month Amazon shopping. Some of it is necessary gear, but too much isn’t. My tricky area is clothes-I trimmed my wardrobe by a lot, but wearing the same clothes every day (until they are too grubby to wear), they are wearing out and some need to be replaced soon. Can’t sew blue jeans or sweats by hand, but I need to work harder on sewing up some projects that are already half done. Thrift stores can be an option, but I’m hard to fit, and can’t leave my oversized puppy in the car for long.

This is such great advice and I'm really glad I'm watching because it adds to what I'm currently doing. It hit me in the face a few months back that if I didn't have so much credit card debt, I could buy a van. Like, a NICE van. So an empty van should be very doable. I am currently working on a combination of the snowball plan and what I call "scalping." Every time my bank balance is an uneven, odd number, I scalp that into my savings. Sometimes it's $239, sometimes it's $7.59. I think what a lot of people get discouraged by is thinking dang, I only have like $10 extra a payday I could put in savings. But it's crazy how those tiny amounts add up. At any rate, in addition to stomping that snowball as hard as I can, when I hit $1k in that particular savings account, it gets slapped on a card. When you can pug a BIG chunk like that on, it feels like actual progress. Anyway, that's what I'm doing, and I'm going to think about what I can do to also maybe implement what you talk about here. Sorry for the long comment. Just excited because this is exactly where I am right now and feeling pretty motivated. Going to look into those budget apps because that's honestly my weak point.

I’ve recently made a commitment to stop drinking. Primarily because I could see, it was affecting my health. But as a regular drinker hanging out at a neighborhood bar once or twice a week, I was spending, I figure, in the neighborhood of about $70 a week on drinks and tips. That’s over $3600 a year! this is a big motivator for me, and I’ve noticed I’m already losing weight on top of it.

One thing I was lucky enough to pull off is getting a full time job with medical while living in my vehicle. I’ve been at this job for a month & a half. My first priority is a round of car maintenance. Then I will be free to save & invest. I have no rent 😆 The only thing is I’m being “risky” & doing crypto 😬🤷🏽‍♂️ But I’m also looking for a new graduate program to finish my degree & get into that field… but I digress. Yeah, if you can work full time & don't have to pay rent saving $10k in a year is nothing

Great advice, Dee! I'd be embarassed to say how much money I have wasted in the past two years. However, zI had fun and ate well. I was addicted to restaurant-hopping. In January I told, well asked, my daughter to help me save. I gave her several hundreds of dollar to a separate account in her bank. I can have access to it in emergency situations only. I have no debit card to access it while I travel. I am paying off my three credit cards in the next three months and place them in a file, not easily accessed. I use my debit card only. I'm cutting out any purchases that are not necessary...no impulse buying. Rather than shop for a whole week's worth of groceries, I buy only what I eat or will eat for that day. I make a pot of spaghetti on Saturday and it serves me meals for four to five days. I supplement it with fruit or Dollar Tree applesauce cups or fruit. Buying some foods at Dollar Tree can save some bucks, too. Ice is two dollars a bag vs for to six bucks at big grocery stores or gas stations. So far I have over a thousand in savings. Shoes were my weakness and at one time I had a dozen pair in my van and another dozen in storage. This month I'll take anything I haven't used in the past six months and either donate to Goodwill or pay ten to twenty bucks for a flea market space and sell everything cheaply, then place the proceeds into the savings account.

Always eat before going to the grocery store, and if you have a house mortage, see if you can do something about that. I used to pay 10.000NOK each month, which was almost half my paycheck, and half of that was just intrest, so my loan didn't really go down. Now I pay if I want to, which means that I have 10.000 extra each month, and no intrest, and it gives me the opportunity to borrow without having to apply to the bank. The money I pay down, is the money I have to use, I set my own roof on how much that will be. (only available if you have paid down 60% of the mortage) You can also easily put something like saladseeds and such, in your potted plants, or grow potates in a bucket, it tastes really good, and is available in your home, when you need it. I travelled with my potted plants, and they survived down to 1C (still thriving) I could have had salad growing instead. 😉
