We parked in that spot on Cairngorm, stayed several nights at the campsite and cycled a loop round boat of Garten and back past An Lochan Uaine so we walked back up the next day to swim (head above water). Sand is unbelievably natural. Ski bar is Pine Marten. Kayaked on Loch Morlich. Swimming, cycling, walking kayaking paradise. It's nice now we have a van as the weather can be a challenge in a tent!

I swam the circumference but a lot of logs and got midged when I got out, at the end of Sept! Didn't know about leaches either but they're no problem compared to ticks. I got covered with them in Thailand waterfall walking in a monsoon.

Went on a school trip to Youth Hostel to loch not lock , please! Morlich,,,try that ! I was 15 and now 65… Hagrid lived on Loch Lomond…. Ps the water was well cold.

I didn't realise they had stopped breakfast. In fairness we have been in the area a number of times over the last few years and that's the first we have ever been to the Pine Marten. The youth hostel used to do food as well but I haven't looked this year.

You have to be careful with a dog in green lochan in the summer its prone to blue/green algae as well as leeches.

I fear I'm more bellend than legend, but such is life. I think you're right about the beach being natural - it's something called a kettle lake, which is a type of usually shallow lake formed by slowly melting glaciers at the end of the last ice age. Beaches are quite common for kettle lakes, given their combination of being shallow, thousands of years old, and surrounded by mountains, so having plenty of small rocks and suchlike to be worn down to sand.
