L.J. has been living in her vintage 1977 GMC Vandura camper van conversion for 3 years while working a 9-5 job in HR. She bought the van for just $500 and enjoys the van life because it allows her to save money and live on a budget, but mostly she loves the freedom of parking wherever she wants, and of being able to travel on weekends.
She's recently quit her job and is planning to travel for a year in the van, and overseas to the Philippines and Indonesia.
We love how simple L.J.'s van is - no power, no heat, just the basics like a bed, a swivel seat, a cooler, and some books. She makes the lifestyle look easy although she does splurge during a couple of the coldest winter months to sublet an apartment.
Thanks for watching!

Wow I am going through the same transition, I just bought a van for $275 and plan to convert it and live in it part time for a year or two traveling the summer months and every weekend. While I work my 9-5. If all goes well I want to eventually live in it full time. Everything she said is exactly how I feel and I went through something similar when I was 15. Love her story 💕💚

have you ever had a van dweller or RV dweller park directly in front of your house for long periods of time? its legal so they do it, but its annoying and rude. and shanty towns parked on your street aren't good for real estate value

I get what your saying. I doubt this lady would do that. Most decent van dwellers do stay in a place that long. They avoid the residential streets for the most part. Or just stay a night.

I think I have watched this video a hundred times because it gives me the confidence that this lifestyle is doable. I am moving into my van like her and keeping a day job. It feels a little strange doing this lifestyle but it calls me. A little nervous about what others will think but still moving forward.

I admire and respect your choice to live in a van. Most people live their lives like a repetitive computer program, doing the same things every day, get up, eat breakfast, drive to work, spend 8 hours as a slave to make enough money to pay the bills, mortgage etc., drive home from work in traffic, get all stressed out, get home, make dinner, watch tv, go to bed.....repeat. A very sad existence. You are living a free life, a minimalist life, a simple life is the best way to live. Bravo.

bill whatman we could change the way the economy works, so people could get by working less, and we could have more doctors and firefighters, etc. So we aren't so burned out all the time. If that makes sense. The work week should be less than what it is. If you're getting the standard amount of sleep, you're spending over a third of your awake time just at work (if you're doing 40 hours)... Plus traffic and stuff... We spend so much time working a job we aren't loving and passionate about, for a retirement we possibly can't have (cuz not everyone lives to 65 or things happen, and you still have to work)

Many people work in the public service sector. Social workers, police, teachers etc. Just because someone works a "9-5" doesn't make them a slave. I enjoy my job and my life. I love the outdoors, have other hobbies and read 100 books a year as well but my calling is serving others.

I got lucky & got a teaching position In London for a university in the USA at athier London campus & taught for 3 years,,,EVERY weekend I took a trip around Europe.Russia, and Ukraine were my favs. I am presently in the process of a van build. Now that I am retired I want to experience western USA for a few years. Living in an RV is liberating. Good luck to you young lady! ;-)

Had a 1979 Ford Econoline van that I did epic, very remote, X-treme camping excursions in. That van went at least 500,000 miles. I took it up the Oregon Coast to Vancouver Island, then north and across to Uculet onto un-mapped logging roads near Kennedy Lake/Pacific Ocean. Didn't see a single, solitary person for a week. Had to drop bread crumbs to find my way out. There were bears roaring and wolfs trotting around. That van never let me down. Throw a solar panel on the roof and painted a plastic water container black with shower fittings on it and it was the most amazing experience of my life. The Zen of that kind of peace and tranquility never leaves you. This is the way to experience nature. Just me and my dog. (and a shot gun, cuz weird people scare me- ha ha)

This is Great - But a word of advice, invest in some good quality tires - These tires (at least from what vid shows) are in bad shape & your life is riding on them - Also these early type GM vans are easy fixes as parts are still plenty avail. & most have the tried & proven pretty much bomb proof 350ci / 5.7L engine w/ good maintance will last almost indefnite as long as their used regular - Hope you dont mind the advice - You seem like a nice young Lady who is living well - Good Luck...

For a youngster, you have become acutely aware of the relatively short time we have in life and how best to spend it to actually grow your soul:) The neah sayers and majority of people have their own media driven brainwashed thinking about how to spend (pun intended) their relatively short time and life. Hopefully they will get it eventually or not:) Glad you did at such a young age! One of your prior posters summed up the fork in the path of life you discuss. I have changed some of it to illustrate the choice: The desire to have a strong professional career, earn money and work hard are in conflict with the desire to live a minimalist life. Career types have debt, mortgages and lots of possessions...hence the need to work so much more to pay for their stuff they really don't need and which eventually no one really wants. Others like the relaxed, more natural, spiritual, laid back, no hurry up and rush life with minimal possessions (what you actually need to live comfortably) and a freed up schedule to actually live your life outside of the preordained box, fish bowl or hamster cage, whatever term you prefer. Finally, your "home" looks absolutely awesome. You might want to consider some kind of interior design work which you could do while on the road:) Good luck out there:)

Thanks for another great vid, EA. Though this one still left me with a lot of questions: 1. Did van life negatively impact her job? Is this something she shared with her coworkers and superiors? 2. Did she have enough clothes in the van to come to work presentable and professionally dressed? 3. Did she encounter any obstacles in finding somewhere to park? Is she on public lands? 4. Did/Does she have any concerns about her safety where she is located? 5. How does she shower/use the bathroom? Gym? Gas station? Makeshift waste collector in the van? 6. The van as no power and she only has a cooler for refrigeration. How does she charge her electronics? How does being restricted to a cooler affect what she buys for food and her diet? If you have answers to these questions or could pass them along to L.J., I would really appreciate a response. Seriously, considering van life and tiny homes, so it would be a great help.

You know, I had the same questions, but I found that I already knew the answers and solutions...I just used my own thought process. Its that which is needed in living like this. If you havent got that then there are loads of youtube vids going into those very questions, you just have to research it yourself :) Trust me, you will have a lot of answers when you simply start doing it for yourself. Try it, it is empowering to know you made it on your own. When I saw my solutions as viable from other van dwellers on here, I was chuffed, I knew I have what it takes to make it and to make it well living free.

I live full time in my van. I work full time as a carpenter during the summer, and solar installer during the winter. My van is set up with solar for power. And I have a refrigerator. For showering I have a portable hot water on demand hot water heater. It's mounted to a back door. I open them and hang a curtian and shower. I mostly stay on public lands when I travel. I also have a gym membership to planet fitness. I can work out and use their showers. Using the bathroom I either use public, at work or I hava a portable toilet. I carry all the tools I need to do both my jobs, if your van is well thought for your needs. And get creative with the space. You'll be surprised what you can fit. I follow the weather and the mild temps. Heat and air conditioning are really needed. I do get lonely when. I travel alone. But the van community is so large in western half of the U.S. you can always find a friend. I have met friends that we caravan together as a group for a month. Then when one of needs to recharge alone. It's no big deal. Everyone gets it. I have a rule for what I have I'm my van. If it doesn't have a dual purpose. It's doesn't need to be there.

Well done sweat heart. Ive been full time for twelve years in a Hiace camper. I intend to live out my life this way. Retired at 46 after selling that over size shelter that you work most of your best years to buy "a dream " Be safe and well.

I enjoyed listening to her story, but I really would have loved to have gotten a tour of the van especially since it seemed to have such a lovely and quirky feel to it. Plus the fact that so many out there are living in the larger sprinter vans and I feel like these smaller sizes aren't given as much view time.

An excellent idea, especially when you have no responsibilities or dependents weighing you down. The more you travel the more you learn and grow. Taking a year off to do so, when you've planned it, saved for it, is sensible. Your mental health is valuable. Congratulations on being brave enough to take those steps.
