Van (The Man) hit the radio when I was 6yrs old, I am now 60. I feel like his music is literally part of my soul and it will remain there till the day I pass.

No relation to Jim Morrison but The Doors supported Van’s band Them at the Whiskey A Go Go in the 60s. After that Jim adopted some of Van’s stage moves. Robbie Robertson has said this was his favourite act for the night.

Van was my husband's choice for his funeral. He was the soundtrack of our life together. He sings great gospel songs, too.

If I may ask, which song did he choose? I've given strict instructions it's his Madame George for mine. Van on form is very hard to beat. This is right up there. His live LP It's Too Late To Stop Now is also stunning.

Van had his first hit at 16 with “Gloria.” His inspirations were blues giants - Howling Wolf, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker (who he played with much later). Also Irish folk singers, and country like Hank Williams especially. In this video he’s got his eyes closed because he was paralyzed with stage fright. He almost didn’t go on. But he loved The Band, and lived near them. He was hardcore drinking buddies with The Band’s keyboardist Richard Manuel, one of the few musicians he ranked as good as he knew he was. He’s called Van the Man, but only because it rhymes better than “God.”

Van the man fan here, he was a window cleaner from here in Belfast Northern Ireland in the early Troubles, and a big blues lover and had the voice to match, he is still preforming and going strong, and is a real legend round these parts, as a local boy does good
@cameronberry4574 ай бұрын
Asking about his influences, you hit the nail on the head in discussing soul singers. Van cites hearing Mahalia Jackson as a pivotal moment in his life and has a song called "Jackie Wilson said". His music always has an amazing blend of influences from blues, European folk, jazz, country and just about everything thing pre-rock, but he would define himself as someone that wants to be a "soul singer". The most interesting part, among a lot of interesting parts, is that that desire is always butting up against his awareness of his own unique culture.

"I love his personality" is an ironic statement since when he isn't performing he is completely devoid of personality. And I don't mean when he is off stage I mean in between songs. He completely ignores the audience and wants nothing to do with them. Is that good or bad? That's up to you to decide. But most people expect the performer to at least acknowledge them...
