Van Pelt is rarely so callous. She is usually the sensitive one. Harsh words but I'm fairly certain she didn't mean to sound so harsh. I find myself on the verge of tears every time Jane is forced to face his family's tragedy and his personal demons.
@eventhorizon124 жыл бұрын
Actually, I'm fairly sure that in that moment, she did mean to sound that harsh. She has a habit of being overly sensitive and rude about her opinions, when others don't share them. She got mad and wanted to make Jane feel bad, plain and simple. Maybe she realized, she'd gone too far afterwards, but it doesn't excuse that kind of bad behavior.

I know Van Pelt overstepped her bounds, but she did apologize immediately, and only made her outburst after being mocked by her colleagues. And you know what? Even if there's nothing at all on the other side of this life, Patrick Jane keeps his family alive inside his heart, and it's pretty clear Angela very much hated the disdain and mockery her peers at the carnival no doubt lavished on those they considered stupid and gullible. She hated it enough to leave permanently, and she begged Patrick to stop his own conning work and him brushing her off led to the ruin of everything. In any way Angela survived, she was there watching Van Pelt stand up to Jane. I'll bet Patrick saw her in the reprimand *and* the apology.

One of the things about the Mentalist were bits like this, everyone in the comments is bringing up how much of a kind person Van Pelt is and she always was. But a real person isn't always like that, they're going to have bad days, they're going to have sensitive subjects and they're going to have moments when the dam breaks and all that bile comes spewing out on someone. Jane saw her disturbed attitude towards the Seance and he poked her for a reaction, because part of her reaction with Rigsby is due to their sexual tension and he wants them to admit their feelings, get together and be happy, he didn't realise that this was the wrong situation to poke her with. And Van Pelt broke on this issue and her anger came out in an instant on Jane. Quiet and kind people are the ones who have the ability to be the single most devastatingly cruel and evil people the world has ever seen, they're the ones who are able to tell when someone's hurting and why then help them, but they can see that weakness in a moment of their own and use it to utterly destroy the person. The realisation 5 seconds after she said it and the additional 2 to build up courage to apologise is a masterclass of directing, writing and acting because everyone involved here did a perfect job in portraying a real event that can happen in the real world.

💔😔 ...I share Grace's thought and it is obvious that she did not want to be bad, she simply defended her belief and gave her a chance to think of something other than what we can see... (when the only bad guys there were them making fun of what she I believed) The fantastic thing about this series is that there was always a margin to think that there could be something further, without deviating from the theme even with the management of skepticism, the series did not completely close to presenting a single idea as valid ... there was that "what if?" that was maintained even until the last season with what happened to Vega.

I don't believe for one second Van Pelt was trying to be mean. With Rigsby and Jane mocking her belief, she was only proving to Jane that anything is possible and his family could try to reach him from the beyond. If she was so mean, she wouldn't apologize. And let's not forget seasons later, Patrick did communicate with his daughter

@TheLemery2 ай бұрын
@@Jakebrand11208 Pretty sure this is just good writing. Van Pelt obviously feels strongly about this, probably has one or more issues with loved ones passing (the sister suicide story, whatever it may be based on). Then Rigsby does the insensitive boo/laugh thing, putting her on the defensive, and Jane basically just dismisses her belief. It's pretty much standard human behavior to lash out in a situation like that, and she's probably also projecting her own need that she wants to believe someone may leave something behind to connect to their loved ones. That's all just good writers understanding how people react to stress, beliefs and mockery (even when not ill-intended).
@azraelknightquest57547 күн бұрын
What people who are casuals don't understand is that Van Pelt is a Christian with strong beliefs. Jane has more than once said less than respectful things, even mocking and disrespectful to her faith. Van Pelt probably kept her anger in and then at this moment, burst. And like most emotional outbursts, regretted it afterwards.

@Chris Travolta it was certainly more about Jane and Lisbon than Jane and RJ. Red John was deliberately nebulous and very rarely showed up at all; we never go in depth with his character or who he really was because we didn't need to: he was an evil dumpster fire who needed to die. That's it. The Mentalist is about...the mentalist. Jane's journey is center stage. But if anyone shared that stage, it was absolutely Lisbon. From Watson, to Beatrice, we remember the loyal helpers more than the villains. Enemies are for killing, friends are for living.
