Hi Greg, we are on our first outing with our van and we have two of these Maxxfan Deluxe models fitted. It was a very warm first night and with the fan above the bed blowing fresh air in and the fan above the kitchen on extract, both on the lowest setting, we had a great nights sleep in cool conditions. We couldn’t even hear them at lowest speed setting. I was a little worried about power consumption on the batteries but with the two fans running and the dometic fridge the volt meter had only dropped from 12.8v to 12.7v in seven hours over night.

A great video series which I'm studying like a student. Following you, Greg, I purchased 40x40cm Maxxfans but became confused by the explanation at 14:15 in the installation video where the ridges form a seal into the butyl tape. When I examined my unit, I noticed that these ridges would not even touch the tape - they would be in the 40x40cm hole specified by the installation instructions. At that point I didn’t know whose instructions to follow. But then I realized that you fit a 40x40cm fan into a 35.5x35.5cm opening from the previous fan. So, once again my faith in your instruction was restored. Now I’m even planning of cutting a 35.5x35.5cm hole to match your method! Working on that today in fact. Another Problem: there are 4 holes to screw the fan to the “Roof Receiving Flange” - yet none of these holes lined up so that I could put the screw in there. Then I looked at my 2nd fan and found the same problem for all 4 holes there too. I also found online that others had this same problem. The solution is to adjust the little clips containing the holes upward - but note that you must be gentle and quite careful to avoid damaging the plastic (or your fingers). If you twist the flathead gently between the clip and a plastic lip just below the clip, the clip can be adjusted upward and then the holes will line up. Hope this helps others.
@GregVirgoe

The fans are both the same size the only thing that is different is the size of the roof flange. I chose the larger flange to cover any existing screw holes. The reason the retaining screws don’t appear to line up at first is the rubber gasket the fan sits on. A little downward pressure on the fan pushing it into the gasket will allow the screws to be fitted. Any adjustment to the hole location may lessen the effectiveness of the seal here. They will go in with a little effort 👍🏼🤩

There was a tip someone gave in the USA when fitting the fan change out the 4 fixing screws to security ones as if you leave the van unattended with the vent open all it takes is for someone to get on the roof undo 4 screws and the whole fan lifts out. worth a thought I say.

I'd have two, one on extract, one on intake and one at the back and one further forward. That way you get an even airflow across the ceiling where most of the warm moist air is sitting. Expensive way to go, but comfort levels guaranteed.
@michaell8835
@michaell8835 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Do you find that the airflow is only up at the ceiling level, and things stay a bit warm lower down with no cross-flow to keep you cooler? Just wondered how it compared to one fan on out-flow, with an open window at the other end of the van to cross air where you'll feel it, if you've tried that I'd love to know how it compares?
@JohnnyMotel99
@JohnnyMotel99 5 жыл бұрын
Michael L unfortunately I don’t have a van! But if I did I think this is the way I’d go. You could direct the airflow depending on the activity. Like on a warm night have it extract above the bed and intake from the front. Just my thoughts really.
@michaell8835
@michaell8835 5 жыл бұрын
Bad Robot Thank you. I had been thinking of having a large rooflight at the back (for maximum light) and a maxxfan at the front to move the air. But, I think you are right, and the benefit of a direct airflow pushing down above the bed on a hot night is a major benefit, more so than the extra light from a normal roof light. Appreciate your feedback.

Morning Greg, a couple of notes from installing mine, I used a bit of silicon grease on the rubber seal it helped the unit settle when fitting the four side support screws into the flange. I found the seal made the alignment slightly proud when new. The positive wire is Black and the Negative is White, I guess using those colours that made sense to someone! Rather than lots of messy sealant (Puraflex 40 from toolstation is fine for this type of installation imho) around the screws, I have decided to cap them with small strips of white plastic, it looks neater and removes risk of water ingress from all those screws! It's always made me chuckle that these things are relatively lightweight but have a billion screws to fix them through the roof, yet people will quite happily take a risk with a 20KG solar panel, stick it to potential unsound paint with cheap nast plast brackets and a tube of goo! As you know for us Unistrut rules :)
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 5 жыл бұрын
Criftins Campers thanks for those tips. W4 mastic sealing strip is the right stuff to use. The number of screws is all about an even clamp along the joint line. Water is a bugger it will find a way in through the tiny of holes. I’m reluctant to sika the screws but this flange will be the last this van sees 👍🏼😀

@tradersato
@tradersato 5 жыл бұрын
Like I said before, that weir you talk about as a positive, can be a negative since it does not allow for complete sealing from the outside air. For example when storing the RV or in very cold temperatures, there is no way to close the vent if so desired.

thats true but its an issue that can easily be fixed by building some sort of insulated board and place it below the fan. I would recommend doing that with any window in sub zero conditions.

I binge-watched your videos when I was planning my own van build-out. I'm well into the conversion now. Thank you. This video feels a little more ... corporate? I have the MaxxAir fan as well - finished the install a few weeks ago in fact. The remote is pretty dodgy. The user interface is baroque and the remote has no clue as to what state the fan is in so often gives misleading information. If you hit the fan power button on the remote but the fan didn't get the IR signal, the remote and fan appear to get "out of phase" with one another - the remote saying the fan is on, the fan silently demurs.

softdorothy Is there another brand fan that might be worth considering? I'm new to all this gear and all I'm seeing in these camper van conversions is the Maxxfan brand, they're not inexpensive, but the problem you describe, shouldn't be happening in a unit that costs as much as a Maxxfan. If you had to purchase another fan now, would you buy another Maxxfan, or would you search for a different brand? Thank you for anything you care to share.

@@sheri4673 My sense is that the MaxxAir fan is still the best one out there. What I describe is more of a nuisance really, not a deal breaker. I agree though they should resolve it at that price-point. You made me think though - I wonder if there could be an aftermarket for modding the MaxxAir fan to add some "smarts" to it.... Some entrepreneur should step up.

I have two in my van. They work great. Mine are white, they do let light in, not much but enough for me to notice in the early morning when I want to sleep. So I made a cover to block, from the inside, the one over my bed. As for the remote controllers....the van is small, both remotes work with both fans. So you have to be pretty much under the one you want to control without affecting the other. I cannot control the front fan from the back when in bed. There should be a channel setting on these for this exact issue. If there is, I haven't figured it out.
@lorcro2000
@lorcro2000 5 жыл бұрын
The only problem I have with these is insulation. As in, they have basically none, as far as I can tell. Which means you have to figure out some way to insulate them from the inside if you're going to be out in winter conditions. Especially if they leak air even in the closed position, a tiny leak of -30 degree C air is going to be brutal. May not be the most common temp to live in a van but it happens.
@GregVirgoe

I never plan to be in the van when it’s -30 outside, why would you love or go there lol There is an additional blind that fits internally that can offer another layer of protection. See my next video

I noticed the bay seller you linked to doesn't ship to Finland, so I guess I will either have to ask them if they would if I purchased two, failing that, I would have two pay €600 each locally which is a rip off, Finland is so expensive Greg mate.

Greg: Perhaps the design has changed since I bought my MaxxFans, but mine appear to be completely sealed when closed. Also, when using the thermostat feature with the remote, the fan speed automatically varies based on the difference between the set and actual temperature; slower when the difference is small and faster the larger the difference.

Brilliant as per usual Greg. I watched your van build videos in a couple of days and can honestly say it's the definitive van build series. Having watched them all and the 'things I'd change video' i wondered if you could put a link on the vids that have the things you would change. Like the original fan vid, could you add a link on it highlighting the issues or updates or would this be a pain to do?

Nice video Greg as usual. I was hoping you would cover the electrical power draw of the fan at the lowest and highest setting. That would let one factor the drain on house batteries if one were to leave it on over night, or parked unattended for known period of time on a hot day. I saw nothing mentioned on the company’s web page. Looking forward to part two.

Just finished installation using your method to build up layers of butyl tape until it even out with the ridge of the roof. The hot temperature of the desert made the butyl soft like putty. I have not installed all the screws yet (wait until cooler evening), but then I realized that the screws will just compress the plastic flange against... a stack of mud. That is not structurely sound as my engineering mind just rang the alarm. Have you had any long term problem with your installation?
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe Жыл бұрын
The W4 mastic tape stays sticky and pliable it does not go hard. But as long as you merge all the joins together to make one continuous gasket with it it will do a good job of sealing. Don’t tighten the screws down too hard as they will deform the plastic and that will crack over time. Make sure to put sika on top of the screw heads. They are my top tips 👍🏼😃

Until next time 👍🏻

The remotes will work with any unit. If you have multiple units you simply point the remote to the unit you want to change the settings on. The units can get a little confused using one remote between the two, simply because the remote won't send the same message twice. For example. if you pressed "close" for one unit, the remote will register that the unit is closed. If you then tried to click "close" for the other unit, the remote will send an "open" signal. The way to overcome this is to block the IR on the end of the remote and then press the "open" button so that the remote screen matches what the fan is currently doing (in this case, being "open"). The next time you press the "close" button, the unit will then close. Hope I'm making sense. But in short, 1 remote will operate 2 units.

@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 3 жыл бұрын
We wanted to be off grid most of the time and AC uses a lot of electric. Typically a 1200W ac system would use a third of that in power so 400W per hour. That’s a lot to take out of your batteries. You would struggle other than being on electric hook up on a camp site.

I'm intending to put this, or something similar on the roof of a Sprinter with a super high roof, which is made from fiber glass. Any tips for installing on that? Also, I was thinking to only install one, the clear one, and to have it near the back door, but my kitchen is just where the bulkhead divide is behind the cab. I see another comment suggesting to put it above the kitchen, but I was thinking, I could just crank open the from driver/passenger windows if steam etc is a problem when cooking? I guess if I had two of these, I could put the extract on above the kitchen and the other at the back door, but I'm thinking just get one, so not sure where best to position it. Also, the super high roof is just under the 3 meter mark that is the difference between class 2 and class 3 toll prices on French motorways, so I'm wondering now, with this closed, it's 132mm tall, so I'm wondering will whatever reads the height of the van at the automated toll booths, read the van at over 3m with this on top and end up costing me a lot in tolls down the line as there's a big difference between class 2 and class 3 toll prices!
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
Cormac O'Sheehan I would place it over your kitchen for the times when you want to cook or boil a kettle when it’s raining outside and best to get rid of any moisture quick as possible. You could just install an opening vent at the back for make up air to bring in fresh air and keep all cooking smells local to the kitchen end. We find just an open vent at night is enough to prevent condensation. I’m not sure about automated tolls as we are 2.9m
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
Cormac O'Sheehan as for installation definitely use the wide mastic sealing strip on outside making sure there are no gaps and use wooden frame underneath for support and to secure screws. I would be tempted to pre drill the fibreglass where the screws go so it doesn’t crack too
@CormacOSheehan
@CormacOSheehan 4 жыл бұрын
@@GregVirgoe thanks a lot Greg! On thinking about the kitchen and condensation thing a little more, I almost forgot I have two side windows which open too, so there'll be a window right beside the cooking area. I'm planning to get the clear one as I have no natural light source at the back of the van. I don't think condensation will be much of an issue, I'm not a tea or coffee drinker and might look into getting a dehumidifier anyway just to be extra careful, especially if I'm drying clothes and that in the van too. Thanks for the tips on fitting it too and the idea to drill some pilot holes first! I'll need to measure the height again, but I'm afraid the fan may tip the total height over 3m :(

Great video as always Greg! Good on you that Maxxair wanted to sponsor you, best decision they’ve made. :) Two questions: Can you lock the lid shut? I plan on using mine during winter camping and don’t want the motors burning up if the lid is frozen stuck. Can you open the lid and have it be a passive fan in open mode? If I don’t want to run the fan for one or other reason.

Hi Greg, Thanks so much for all of the great information. Would you mind explaining the importance of having two fans. Do you need two fans? I assume if you did this would be all you would need for ventilation, (keeping moisture out) aside from some added opening windows. Also, what about putting a fan on the roof in the shower room. Cheers.

kashkoi2 it is a bit of luxury having both fans. At a minimum you need one over your kitchen for cooking. Then you can get away with a opening vent for bedroom end for make up air. You need somewhere for the air to come from or go to. So you need two openings. Having the option to run a fan very quietly on supply on very hot nights is a real bonus. 😀👍🏼

First I must say that I love your vids, they are great and I can't wait to see more of your travel shows. I'm really interested in the next video because I am planing to do the same thing to my van. I'm a little worried that there may be not enough clearance for the back of the unit to clear my solar panels. Thanks, keep up the great work.

I've got a MaxxFan already installed, and am now looking for an opening roof light (without fan) for above the permanent transverse bed at the rear of the van. However, I need a 'hole cut size' a bit narrower than normal at approx 350mm, looking for something quite wide though in the region of 500mm to 700mm. Anybody know of anything? Would be a great help :o)

Hi welcome to the channel. You can have 1 fan I would put it over the kitchen area as you need it most when cooking. Make provision in another area with windows etc for make up air to replace what is extracted. Your shower would benefit from a small extract fan too as that will produce a lot of water vapour.
