In this video, we'll go over the 5 best Vanguard ETFs to invest in. These are the top index funds from Vanguard that you can buy and hold forever to help you reach Financial Independence sooner. 100% of my investment portfolio is loaded up with ETF index funds just like these because they're simple, reliable, and can easily double, triple, or even quadruple in price if you hold them for long periods of time.
I always suggest buying and holding these ETFs for as long as possible because the stock market is very volatile in the short term. If any of these investments happen to underperform in the short term then don't automatically sell off your positions. Patience is the most important part of investing.

i retired from the post office in 2009, my tsp (5 index funds you could place your retirement dollars in - mine was 40% in the small company fund, 40% in large company fund and the rest in bonds) was down over 40%. These funds are all very lowcost. Having learned the hard way I knew as long as I did nothing I would get that money back in spades. Over the next decade I ended up with huge gains over what i had before the 2008 swoon and that proves you don't lose until you sell, you just have to have the discipline to wait the market out.

Thanks for great and informative video. What do you think about divident based ETFs like VIG? Does it make sense to hold it as substantial part of the portfolio along with VTI?
@JarradMorrow
@JarradMorrow Жыл бұрын
I'm personally not a fan of building a dividend-based portfolio (very very unpopular opinion here on KZbin) when you're many years away from retirement. What's the point of building a dividend based portfolio? To build a fairly predictable stream of income. Since I'm currently in the accumulation phase of investing and I already have a source of income (through my job), I don't need the dividend income at this time. Once I retire it might be a different story, but for now I'm focused more on growth so a fund like VTI or VOO is better suited for me. Tilting some of your portfolio towards a high dividend fund is fine if that's what you want to do. But just remember that you'll pay more in taxes if not held within a tax advantaged account and dividends aren't "free money". I'm not your guy for dividend investing, but if you do want to go that route then my good friend JJ has a KZbin channel based on that: Dividend Freedom

Hi Jarrad, awesome content! quick question as I am a little new to this, but which type of account did you choose to set up with? (Stocks and shares ISA, General account, etc.)
@ethanpunto9222
@ethanpunto9222 2 жыл бұрын
Stocks and Shares ISAs are good because you can invest a certain amount per year without paying tax on the growth. A general account is also perfectly fine for long term investing despite paying taxes. If you're in places like the UK you can invest in what's called a SIPP (Self Invested Personal Pension), this allows you to invest in stocks, index funds and ETFs and the government will actually top up whatever you put in by an extra 25%. The only downside is that you can't touch it until you reach the age of 55 (but perhaps in some ways this could be a good thing). The SIPP is purely a UK based thing but I'm sure other countries may have something similar, you'll have to do your own research on that depending on where you are in the world. Me personally I'm splitting my long term investment portfolio 50/50 between a Stocks and Shares ISA and a SIPP

Great video! One thing that kind of confuses me are the risk potentials, since they tend to be either 4 or 5. Aren’t index funds like VTI for example extremely safe and diversified and practically guaranteed to give returns over time? Wouldn’t that make them not risky? Just clarifying since I soon plan to put a lot more into VTI and make up my portfolio around index funds.
@JarradMorrow
@JarradMorrow 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. The risk levels are where they're at for those funds because they're 100% stocks. If you look at something like the Vanguard Target Date 2025 retirement fund it's at a risk level of 3 because it has a higher % in bonds. If you look at the pure bond ETF (BND) it has a risk level of 2 because there are zero stocks in that fund. VTI is properly diversified among its stock holdings so I wouldn't worry too much about the risk level for that one.

You've heard most money managers can't match the market. So a 5 year average on all those 5 you mention would be 12.52 vs S&P 500 at 16.6. Some sectors get 'hot' for years, but if we're saying 'hold forever', got stats on 20 years on those, thoughts?

I appreciate the video, some good ideas on ETfs. However, I question the Real Estate pick. RE is already represented on a weighted basis in the total market ETF and with real estate at all time highs/rising rates looking I’m not sure it it adds value to a portfolio for either diversification or for a good bargain. You’d be better off holding a mix of small cap and international bonds on a risk return basis than the RE ETFs that are offered in the market. No need to overweight this.

Well similar to VXUS you would only allocate a portion of your portfolio to VT. Let's say if you have 70% VTI and 30% VT. That basically is similar to 90% VTI and 10% VXUS.

@HidingFromFate 2 жыл бұрын
Fair point. Can't think of any reason why one should do that though. Seems easier to just go with the second VTI/VXUS combo scenario. But technically, you are correct.

@@tracimorgan3695 Either one is fine. They are just different share classes of the same investment. Since you hold VTSAX in IRA there is no tax if you decide to switch.

Thank you! This was an excellent video. Very informative, clear, and concise! For people who take your buy-and-hold approach, what allocation would you recommend for the ETFS listed in this video? (e.g. 80% VTI/10% VNQ/10% VB)

Will you hold this portfolio in taxable brokerage account or Roth/traditional IRA brokerage account and if no bonds what is your rationale for no bonds?

@@alrocky probably some of both since I have a taxable vanguard account and also vanguard Roth iras.. I can't buy ETFs with my 401k so I buy an s&p 500 index fund. I got out of bonds last year because it seems they haven't paid anything in a long time

@@davidgray1060 VNQ Vanguard Real Estate Fund spits out lots of dividends so should be held in IRA or similar tax advantaged account (unless you plan to spend those dividends right away). Stock market down ~ 11% ytd so anyone holding bonds likely happy.

Will it make any difference if I sell from my vanguard Total US stock market account and buy the comparable ETF? I’m thinking of putting my portfolio on Digital Advisor which would mean transferring it all to ETF’s.

Way to go man. Great explanation. My only concern is that you didn’t mention any bond ETF to balance risk I know BND ETF and the likes are not doing well, and might go even more down when the Fed starts to raise rates…but long term, some bond allocation always gives some piece of mind

Hello I have a question. When I buy an ETF from example Vanguard: what exactly do I buy? I know an ETF represents a basket of shares, but I can imagine Vanguard will not buy/sell shares all the time for the invested capital of all owners of the ETF during the day. I can imagine they have to hold something of a buffer as collateral. Can you tell me more? Gr.

Risk is fairly subjective when it comes to investing, but if you want a general sense of the risk of a fund vs. it's category then you should be able to just do a quick google search. I know Morningstar does this for every fund, but I don't have first hand experience with too many other platforms
