Some American chums and I played 'All Time Top 5 Songs' earlier this year. This is their song I liked the most: *"Warren Zevon* - Trouble & *Lawyers, Guns and Money - David Letterman Show, 1988"* (3m22s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2KlqXqamslpZpY (First 50s are "Trouble" which leads straight into LG&M, so can't skip easily.) This version is in *colour:* shot in a studio, so sound is very good. It's a different feel to a live concert _Introducing the song:_ The lyrics are the important part, though the tune is bangin' enough for encores. This is an alternative version. It's B&W AFAIT a live concert encore, but the video is very dark *"Warren Zevon - Lawyers, Guns And Money"* (4m22s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYvbkIeloK57mqs 4/18/1980 - Capitol Theatre (Official) (Zevon is pronounced Zee-Von, the 'Von' rhymes with the name 'Ron'.) _Sprinkling of facts about this song:_ Comments under his YT videos say Zevon liked to travel around. He'd seek out backwater bars, and hangout with unusual people, for example mercenaries. Commenters say this song is inspired by some of their stories. However, Zevon's said in interview he went down to Mexico with Hunter S. Thompson (see below). They had 'an incident' (maybe with the police). Thompson was on a phone asking for help. Thompson asked for Lawyers, then Zevon shouted 'Guns and Money'. Zevon appeared on David Letterman's late night talk shows from 1982 to 2002. David Letterman liked Zevon a lot. As well as great, quirky, songs, Zevon was quick witted in interviews. In a Letterman interview, Zevon said that BoB Dylan had invented his job, so Zevon was auditioning for 'voice of my generation' 😀 In a later interview Letterman told Zevon the audition was going well. G Bulmer's (G-Man) comments: "The only Warren Zevon track I knew before this was 'Werewolves of London'. I liked 'Lawyers, Guns and Money' so much I listened to a lot of Zevon songs. I like him a lot. IMO Warren Zevon is a Bob Dylon alternative; except I like Zevon's wicked sense of humour in his lyrics 😃, and I prefer Zevon's singing voice too 😁 I'll post a couple of other of my friends 'Top 5' song choices in separate comments. _THIS IS A VERY VERY LONG POST. SORRY._ _WARREN ZEVON_ Warning: Zevon's sense of humour can be very dark, so maybe avoid 'Excitable Boy' at first; I think it's the darkest lyrics on a happy, upbeat tune I've ever heard. -------- Zevon was known at the start his career for playing piano. In a promotional appearance for his latest album on David Letterman's show Zevon played his song on guitar. Zevon sat down for the interview, and Letterman said "you're quite new to the guitar". Zevon laughed and said "was it that bad?"; I assume he knew where Letterman was going (these shows are not really spontaneous), but was being playful. Letterman asked about the rumour that Zevon has refused to play piano on his own album. Zevon agreed. He'd asked his manager (I think) for cash, right there and then in the studio. The manager offered a cheque, but Zevon wanted cash. The manager got a $200 cheque cashed at a nearby store, gave Zevon the cash, but Zevon decided it wasn't enough, and still didn't play piano on his album. Zevon's career had many twists and turns, with several hiatus and come-backs. In an interview the American Talk Show host David Letterman suggested he'd maybe celebrated more frequently than he should. Zevon agreed. Pressed, Zevon said he was drinking, maybe, two quarts of vodka a day 😢 He had changed though. I believe he was sober for 17 years. Zevon's final performance was on David Letterman's Late Night Talk show. Zevon had announced he was dying of mesothelioma (lung cancer associated with asbestos). A few months later, Letterman's one hour show had Zevon as the only guest for interviews and songs. In the interview Letterman asked about his dramatic change of circumstances. Zevon replied "you heard about the flu?". Then said "I may have made a tactical error in not going to a physician for 20 years. It was one of those phobia that didn't pay off". Later in the interview Letterman asked Zevon if things had changed since the diagnosis (ie. now that he was facing death, without being so blunt). Zevon said a few things about his family and how precious each moment was, then gave his often quoted advice on facing imminent death, "Enjoy every sandwich". His last interview was both inspiring and witty: "Warren Zevon - His Last David Letterman Show on October 30, 2002 - Part 1/4" (8m38s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGiwmqWhmZh2ipY Zevon played three songs. Please cut his singing a bit of slack, he was dying of lung cancer: "Warren Zevon - Mutineer - His Last David Letterman Show - Part 2/4 (HD)" (4m27s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6K6oqygith2d9k "Warren Zevon - Genius - His Last David Letterman Show - Part 3/4 (HD)" (6m0s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2aWp2h-jpiGfq8 "Warren Zevon - Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner - His Last David Letterman Show - Part 4/4 (HD)" (5m3s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnqmZZ1sh9NsqZY There are 'better' recordings on YT, but these are more important. He occasionally substituted for Paul Shaffer, Letterman Show's band leader. Letterman even sang backing vocals, and Paul Shaffer played organ. on Zevon's song "Hit Somebody! (The Hockey Song)" ALTERNATIVE videos of this song, in case you're concerned about getting blocked "Warren Zevon - Lawyers, Guns and Money" (3m38s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooGYialthtaLn68 This is not a live performance, it's only photos which help tell the story. However I've seen it in reaction videos (27/6/2021) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoLEiXSPq7WZnJo (uploaded 2/12/2021) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZyzinWomZqXobM "Warren Zevon - Lawyers, Guns and Money" (3m8s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZi1l6uKfJaFnZo From David Sanborn (the saxophonist) Show, 1989 (HD) Colour _HUNTER S THOMPSON_ Was a journalist, writer, founder of the 'gonzo journalism movement' He wrote 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' which was made into movies, the second one starring Johnny Dep. Thompson was known for his lifelong use of alcohol and illegal narcotics, his love of firearms, and contempt for authority. So it's easy to believe Zevon's explanation of the song. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_S._Thompson

One of the best psychedelic rock bands of the sixties , I’m only 49 but from the late 1980s all through the 1990s and even today I have sought out bands like this and Hendrix , Iron Butterfly and anything with an awesome psychedelic rock sound and vibe as I started playing the electric guitar in the late 80s bands like U2 got me interested in playing the guitar and people like Jimi Hendrix set me on fire and brought me to the sixties psychedelic rock and on the rattle and hum - U2 album I heard them play a recording of Jimi Hendrix - Star spangled banner and I was hooked on the sixties music especially the psychedelic rock era and these guys the Vanilla Fudge they got the vibe and the excitement , they were based out of New York and brought an awesomeness to their music !

LOL at the bulldog and teabags! Gotta have those essentials when travelling! 😆 As odd as it sounds, this kinda reminds me of 'Nights in White Satin' (an oldie but a goodie). Very hippie-esqe. Man, they really were going for it, weren't they?? 'Animal on the drum 😂🤣🤣🤣) I actually enjoyed that though. Hmm.

@EnderOllie 4 😆 That was our small homage to Guy Ritchie and "Snatch", again I think it missed a lot of our target audience, but we had fun Can you imagine that coming on the TV back in 1968, parents would have thrown the TV out of the window. I also think Prince may have borrowed some moves from those guys. We will keep the Sunday slot as our American adventure and see what we can turn up. We know you are more for the PTX items, but hope over if you have nothing else planned. back to Christmas again tomorrow...

This was one of the first songs to be categorised as ‘heavy’ back in the day. You should also hear Blue Cheer’s version of Summertime Blues. The drummer is Carmine Appice who went on to play with Jeff Beck.

We have our merch, I let my fellow American bipeds know of the British wonders and Chuey has his sights on the canine front! I know I don't need to say it, but he was squiggling about on the floor with excitement like only a vulgar American would! Keep 'em coming! *9.2* Innovative! Mad vibe. Great song. 'Nuclear' energy. I like it more than anything reacted to recently. That drummer Carmine Appice is a legend. Inducted into multiple 'Halls of Fame'. Still playing in 2020. 2011: Vanilla Fudge "You Keep Me Hanging On" Live on Jimmy Fallon (4m11s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKbMpHqhe8h3jqs An interesting 'what were they doing 40+ years later?' video, maybe? I'm sure Carmine was playing January 2020 because Yoyoka (the Japanese drummer girl) met him at the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) music equipment trade show in California. She was demoing Perl drums (her drum sponsor since she was 8yo). Yoyoka and her dad wandered around the stands with a video camera. She found Carmine on a manufacturers stand demoing drums. I don't think he knew of her. He showed her drum stick tricks (not juggling but playing 'drum' rolls with only sticks! He's in his 70s and still amazing!). Then he gave her a pair of sticks to practice with. He came across as a nice old guy encouraging a young kid to play drums. Lovely. _I didn't know about Carmine Appice. However, the comment section on Yoyoka's NAMM-show video went bonkers. Comments linked him to the truly great Buddy Rich. So I read about Carmine. He's inspired a _*_lot_*_ of great drummers._ BTW 'BUDDY RICH IMPOSSIBLE DRUM SOLO' (4m42s) kzbin.info/www/bejne/b5bWiHpsdpuaY80 is worth a look.

@G Bulmer Wow, yet another fun packed fun fact filled comment. Very interesting to read all that too. He did look a very interesting drummer even on that very basic kit way back when. I think I have become A Vanilla Fudge evangelist. Go down the rabbit hole of the drummer, Carmine Appice. If you listen to some other Vanilla Fudge songs, Carmine and the bass player, Tim Bogert, sound a lot like Led Zeppelin's John Bonham and John Paul Jones. Led Zeppelin's first gig in the United States was as an opening acts FOR Vanilla Fudge. According to members of Vanilla Fudge, the venue couldn't afford the full fee for Led Zeppelin so Vanilla Fudge paid for half. They also helped Led Zeppelin in other ways. For example, John Bonham liked Carmine Appice's drum set that had larger drums and a gong. So Carmine helped John Bonham get set up with a copy of his (Carmine's) drum set. According to the founders of Deep Purple: they had been in a much more mundane band. They heard Vanilla Fudge play and decided "that's the kind of music we want to play" and formed Deep Purple. Appice and Bogert went on to form other bands like Cactus; Beck, Bogert and Appice (with Jeff Beck); etc. If you like Led Zeppelin, check out Evil by Cactus. Appice also composed with and played with Rod Stewart for a while. In some interviews, Appice explains how he helped start the first guitar center drum competitions. Those competitions helped launch the careers of some accomplished drummers. However, it's hard to find anything about it in writing. I trust him though. He apparently got screwed over a lot from the music industry but just kept moving on without holding grudges. Carmine's brother, Vinny Appice is also an accomplished drummer that you can Google.

Here’s a cleaner/clearer sounding version from ‘67, in B&W though: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHTaq3aHmM92Zq8 How about we all take a nice journey back towards your “side of the Pond,” lol! 🌊 Here’s one that wasn’t often heard - here “in the States” anyways - by Emerson, Lake, & Palmer (ELP), one of the finest 3-piece bands ever - no disrespect to the “colonial” (🇨🇦) band Rush, although ELP’s flair for “complexity” came way before Rush ever became “known.” This particular song may not feature the complexity that many/most of ELP’s others did, but it’s precautionary warnings about “the price of fame” are loud & clear - as was also the case with their “You Turn Me On”. Stellar songwriting by the late great Mr. Greg Lake!!!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnvKc414Z6qEa9k

A great track, originally by the Supremes and also covered by Kim Wilde. This band was off their heads and I'll have some of what the drummer was smoking. I bet it was a shock at the time especially in States during the 60's. As for influencing other bands, that may be the case but they certainly did influence the ice cream trade.
