I had a wastegate completely fall off of my Vargas turbos. The Vargas wastegate upgrade didn't seem to matter, I've seen a few of their upgraded wastegates fail. It could be that the dme is providing them with enough vacuum but the pressure could just be blowing past them.

I have the same leaf blower. I miss the roller bearing turbo from my xr6T…you could hear it spinning for a minute or two after you shut the car off. The plain bearing in the Vargas is shot, fill your new ones with moly grease before they’re toast too!

It really seems like the Vargas turbos have bad bearings even though they also seem to spin fairly freely. but I've had a wheel bearing that spin very freely on the hub but when some real weight and speed was applied it would not spin very well at all. IMHO this is similar. Great test you made up LOL. It Worked!

Is 8 in/hg (inches of mercury) right for an n54? I know on my N55 PS2 I screwed up initially and set them around 9" and I was hitting like 21 psi. Set them to Pure's recommend 6" and BOOM...26psi. You have 8, but if your vacuum gauge is just a little off it could be your issue. Or 8 is just too much.

Make sure you get an aftermarket exhaust 3.5 I make sure you run 8psi spring also blow off valve and get 1/4 nozzle for the manifold to the-blow valve vacuum Lane good video looking forward to see your built

Definitely the worst part of a problem is not being able to figure out whats wrong. Also glad I'm dropping my sub frame to change oil pan gasket, will make building my single turbo manifold way easier.

Those turbos are really perplexing. I wonder if there is something wrong with the bearings or bushes or whatever they have. We may never know.

Aren’t they supposed to be closed at 5? I have welded upgraded wastegates on my stock turbos and they close at 5ghz or whatever is it is at 6 there fully closed and my turbos fuck I hold 18psi almost all the way across.

Havn't had anything to do with the B58 versions, but ill bet the Flowmax will make more power. Whether it lasts as long is another story.

How come you hold the turbos by the wastegate rods if they are a part that can prematurely wear with this design. (Cause thought they are not oem turbos?)

I can't see it being a problem at all. Considering they are designed to operate when the metal is literally glowing from being so hot. Twist the bush by picking them up and room temp wont hurt them.

Same issue with my new 19t .. I replaced everything. From turbo to the TB .. only thing lift boost selioned and intake manifold

I got significant increase in responsiveness by just dripping some oil into the boost solenoids. It seems these things get dry seals and stiff actuators after... oh 13 years in hot operation.

What about the intake manifold. I had a similar problem. Seems as though had a vacuum leek there. Had to replace my manifold.

Put a new manifold on the car last week. Didnt make any difference.

The difference in wheel sizes between the Vargas Stage 2 and DAW Flow Max+ is unbelievable considering they are both upgrade hybrids. As you say Andrew, the Vargas turbos look to be in reasonable condition. As a couple of fellows have commented below, whether the wastegates aren't completely closing when they should, could be the issue. Certainly a mystery which will be solved when the DAWs are installed. If the boost issue is no longer present which we all hope will be the case than there is certainly an issue with the Vargas turbos.

The Wastegate must be shut at -5.9inhg. I had exactly the same issue with my turbos, so I readjusted them and since then they just rip. You can look this up in TIS, BMW says -200mbar which equals to -5.9inhg.

I just posted this! Yeah had same problem on my PS2 turbo. Had them at 9" and only hit 21psi. Contacted pure and they said 6". Was hitting 26psi after, in the summer. Cold air I'm now hitting 22-23 but even higher load.

Just from the picture, your using an oem outlet pipe with upgraded turbos? Your front turbo is going to see back pressure cause of that pipe design. I’d look into a better flowing front section on that outlet pipe

That is correct. Unfortunately until recently there were no options for RHD upgraded outlets which is why this car would have never had them. We have some made up for the flow max's tho

Those Vargas turbos seem worn out could have been the issue 🤷 but oh my those new turbos look very pretty indeed 😍

Yeah, who really knows. The part number on the turbos implies they are 5-6 years old. They could have had the CHRAs replaced at some point with the wrong ones.

Make sure you are inspecting you exhaust valves while the turbos are off, check if valve stem seals are leaking oil. When I watched the video it looks like #3 might be leaking a tiny bit.

Both exactly the same. I am wondering if the CHRAs have been replaced with standard ones. And the wheels are too small for stage 2 housings.

Did you check the vacuum pressure/lines? May be you have a faulty vacuum pump.

Crack in one of the turbo manifold ? Hoff and boost issues and there was a crack in the turbo manifold, also manifold might not have been seated properly

Gotta get to the bottom of this! Voltage regulator and boost solenoid signals fuzzy? The fact that boost holds steady makes it unlikely to be electrical. Fricken’ aahhhhhh! Torque limiter? This is a fork in the road, I would really value some kind of diagnosis, but am also eager to move on to see the build continue. Just a guess, worn engine mount causing leak under load? How would that show in a log? This has my brain being an air molecule going through the DCIs lol. Glad you were able to update us, and that you and your fam are enjoying the holiday season. From all the testing we did back in march, everything electrical is spot on and when i had the guage on the wastegate line while driving the turbos were always getting -10 or better vacuum. So they gates should have been locked shut, but still no boost.

I recently found the HPFP Overdrive system by spool performance, it looks like that would allow you to produce enough fueling for the flow max turbos. And even tho it's expensive, that plus an upgraded fuel pump would be cheaper than port injection. Port injection just sounds to complicated to me so I'm wondering what alternatives there are out there. Also, fueling is confusing lol

I really dont like the overdriven HPFP options for the N54. Its not a new thing at all. Spool over drives a single pump. VTT used to overdrive a secondary pump. The VTT system in my opinion was much safer, but they still didn't last. Trying to run over 600whp though our index 12 injectors is just a time bomb. PI is the way in my eyes it makes the power and takes load of the di system.

Its also important to note that the Overdrive kits add more stress to the timing chain, and there have been documented failures attributed to the Xtreme version.

Maybe too much friction in the bearing area. So there is more exhaust gasses needed to spin these wheels. That would explain the late boost kicking in at higher rpm's. ( ps my new injectors are great. But now my HPFP decided to slowly give up. Long cranking at cold start. I guess my welcome to the N54 club) Dutch regards, Nico.

If you are going to throw those vtt turbos out you may as well disassemble the turbos along with the compressor wheels to find out what's specifically wrong. Hopefully you don't find out the oil feed line(s) is clogged or something as that could start seizing your new turbos. Only other reason i could see the turbine wheels not spinning freely is if the turbine fins are damaged causing the air to pass through/ clearances not tight enough. If you do disassemble them make sure to mark the nut, compressor wheel and shaft so you don't have to re balance them.

I will be taking them apart i think. I have a bit of a theory. These turbos are 5-7 years old right and not leaking a drop of oil. I wonder if the original vargas CHRAs got replaced at some point with the wrong size wheels for the housings. Maybe with a stock size CHRA. I did notice the comp wheels are cast, not billet. Would have thought all the upgrades comp wheels would be billet.

All been replaced throughout our testing. Well the map sensor was only done when i did the manifold. But they have both been replaced now.

Problem with using the leaf blower as there is not much static pressure to build boost. If puts out a lot of cfm but not much actual pressure behind it.

@@ZeroTo60Tube agreed. There seems to be some sort of drag with your older Vargas turbos. Unless it’s just a factor of assembly lubricant on the new ones. Either way; looking forward to seeing the new twins installed. Love the channel.

hi mate.. I had a problem like this on my ps2 n55.. my boost solenoid was the problem..I ordered 2 brand new solenoids and they were both faulty out of the box. laggy as hell .I scratched my head over and over..replaced it again and now perfect!! I know actually have relocated my Boost solenoid to the top of the engine just for easy access just in case I have these sort of problems again

This car has had the solenoids replaced. I did test the car with a vacuum guage on it while driving there was always over -10inhg at the gates while trying to boost, to be fair closer to -15inhg

No experience but they look the business. I didn’t look at them and do research before going daw. But I couldn’t find many people actually running them with results.

@@ZeroTo60Tube I’m currently installing the VTT-FRB+ turbos after the break-in period for the Motiv clutch I’m sure I will need a retune. Then eventually to a dyno. Kinda similar builds will be interesting to see the results “cheap build vs not so cheap build” although to be honest once anyone goes beyond the standard bolts ons nothing is really cheap. 😂

@@matt_h537 Thats gonna be a great comparison. However due to differences in dynos (i think its a waste of time comparing dyno numbers). Keen to see what you can do with a dragy. Maybe we can do a specific acceleration range to offset your shifting on a 100-200 or a 60-130.

On the first blower test you can see how uneven the shaft was turning , was bouncy. And ffr ,If This model has that plastic boost vacuum collector tank, if the vacuum pipes are connected incorrectly to it from turbo/ boost sensor / intake , it will affect the boost or if that little plastic tank has a spilt in it , it will affect the performance ( usually on a 320/330d bmw turbo set up)

So how much do these turbos make considering you have have the right fueling? Are they capable of 700whp?

Flowmax Plus will do 700whp on a kill tune. Your motor wont like it tho. They make power way lower in the RPM range than a single. So its a bit sketcy at that power level.

@@the_batmobile0.4 higher power at lower rpm’s stresses the rods and pistons. That’s why twins which make power lower in the rpm range tend to blow more motors

I don't know if our issue is vargas's fault. Quite frankly its bizzare they aren't leaking oil......lol. These things would be 5-7 years old.

How much did flowmax payed you? Go on b58 enthusiasts Facebook group and everyone is selling their flowmax because of Tons of problems with that turbo

They didn't pay anything, maybe they should have...... The ones on our car have been great. Make a lot more power than expected. Very different turbos to the B58s mind you.

No preference at this point in time. But you can make huge power with the 17ts. So unless you are chasing a drag car they make sense. I honestly feel the china turbos are a stepping stone regardless. You will want more.

While that is a good theory, kind of impossible with journal bearings, since the bearing is the oil.

I think your onto something with the blower Andrew 😜 There's no way those huge DAW Flow Max+ turbos should spin up faster than stage 2 ones, something has to be wrong with the Vargas turbos.

haha, its such a non scientific thing, but i couldnt think of another way to test them. I am starting to wonder if someone replaced the vargas chras with ones from a stock turbo. That would explain everything. The wheels are too small for the housings and not sealing properly.

Those are the earliest version of those Vargas turbos 7ish years ago…even our stock turbos didn’t last that long “tuned”

I agree, and that realisation is making me think these have been rebuilt. I wonder if they have the wrong size wheels in them for the housing.

It has had 2 different tuners on it, with about 8 different tries. I dont think it electrical.

I don't mean to be annoying, but there is a more "fair" way to test the turbos without the use of too much special equipment. Firstly, the bearings MUST be actively oil pumped in order to work correctly. Spinning them without oil flow is non-representative and destructive. In order to get the operational RPM, you could shoot a compressed air gun down the center port. You could then use a free sound editor like Audacity to frequency analyze the sound recording of each turbo's spool using the same amount of air charge. You would see several harmonic frequencies, but there would certainly be a loud one coming from the compressor. You also have to apply a ratio factor for the different blade count on the wheels in order to convert blade whips per second to rotations per minute. I'd very much like to see this test, as I have trouble understanding how it is possible that a larger turbo, featuring a much larger 9 blade turbine, and a heavier compressor wheel could exhibit less lag. I would think if all that power was going into bearing friction, the CHRA would explode with boiling oil on WOT pulls.

I’ve had a clients car with VTT Stage 2’s that did exactly the same thing. We boost leak tested it, no leak. Vacuum system was fine. Boost solenoids changed, no change. Pegged the WGDC at 100% and it was laggy and only held 16 psi peak and tapered to redline. They were smokey but they behaved exactly like these. Looked like a mechanical wastegate or rotating assembly issue (bearing drag?) from the logs and given what we’d eliminated. Only turbos I’ve seen ‘fail’ that way.

Inches of mercury lol that’s the measurement your looking for. Also wastegates should be closing at 6-7hg at most. 8hg is too high and that’s probably why they were fully closing until 4k rpm.

When i had the guage on the wastegate line while driving the turbos were always getting -10 or better vacuum. So they gates should have been locked shut, but still no boost.

Check ur blow off valve man If if has a Chinese bov, they come with very flimsy springs. The bov stays open for too long that it doesnt spool below 4k ,then boost pressure just keeps it cracked open all the way. Wont show up on a smoke test.. It could also be the oring on the bov.It's very tricky when a car doesn't make boost . It could be anything. On one car( not similar to this though) it would hit 24 psi quite quickly, but taper off sharply at 5500 rpm down to 6 psi..and wgdc would go to max .after having racked our brains checking everything from wastegates to blow off valves to installing a jb4 etc.Turned out to be inlets getting collapsed under high flow . It was running the stock intake with a drop in filter, a simple dci helped immediately,and it now holds boost to 6500, wgdc only at 75% . ive also tuned a vargas turbo on a 135 recently and they spool fine at around 3000 rpm and hold boost to redline..they are lazier to spool than the 17Ts,similar to 19T, but they make gobs of boost.

We did swap the bovs. Put those over boosting China ones on from the 17t car and another set of stock ones. Nothing seemed to help the boost.

@@HassanEido1 I did come up with a theory in my sleep. I noticed the vargas turbos have cast comp wheels. Which i thought was strange. But it clicked they are 5-7 years old and not leaking oil.... i wonder if someone replaced the vargas CHRAs with stock ones. So the wheels are too small for the high flowed housings.

I'm on my third set of turbos and from what I learned all upgraded N54 turbos have very similar reliability record, whether it's vargas , flow max, VIV or cheap Chinese turbos they're all unpredictable and can last from as high as 50 thousands kilometer to as low as 10 thousands kilometers, it also depends on how good the engine is running aside from the turbos and how good the ECU tune is.

@@bmwn54_cb67 HKS bov on a vrsf charge pipe, Eldor ignition coils, 2 step colder plugs, index 12 injectors(a must), did the walnut blast and changed all engine gaskets , just installed the VIV V3 19Ts , custom tune to 21 psi , plus the downpipes and exhaust,

You can’t compare antiquated Vargas stg 2 turbo with the latest up to date other turbo’s flow max equivalent to vargas F-RB+ Vargas turbo has thrust bearing erosion definitely.

Vargas turbos are built very cheap i work at a turbo shop and we have had a couple in our shop and they are not quality parts i recommend everyone stays away from them

Interesting, i have come up with a blind theory. These vargas turbos are old, like 5-7 years old. I wonder if someone rebuilt them at somepoint and put a smaller CHRA assembly in them. Like a stock one, do you think smaller turbine wheels in a high flowed housing would give the boost characteristics we are getting?

8 inches of MERCURY is too much, you have to go to 7 inches of MERCURY and see if there is play. Go to 7 and see if there is any play. I think Vargas turbos and China turbos are the same thing🤪🤪🤪
