Your Avast story reminds me of something that happened to my mother when I was in high school. I had a Macintosh Performa 550 (33 MHz 68030 CPU, 5 MB RAM), and they had a feature where you could schedule them to turn themselves on (the RTC was tied into the soft power supply). Furthermore, you could also have files in a "Startup Folder" that would run upon startup. I put the sound of a _one minute long Air Raid Siren_ in the startup folder to get myself up early, cause I'm a heavy sleeper... This was my alarm clock... And I let my mother borrow the computer for something... She set it up in her bedroom... and she was woken by a 1 minute long air raid siren, at max volume, at 4:30 AM... I'm so glad she didn't have a heart attack! XD

The only thing “destroyed” about 8 was the UX with the new UI and start screen which wasn’t appealing to everyone. I personally had no issues and saw past it to the advantages of 8, which were substantial: sleeker look, kernel optimizations making it much faster than 7 and making my Celeron shitbox usable, automatic background maintenance, ability to mount ISOs in Explorer, a more robust update agent… I could go on. But leave it to the mindless mainstream tech crowd to shit on 8 for one reason and ignore everything good about it. 7 gave me more headaches than 8 with its stupid ass update agent and instability. Also Aero on 7 is a complete downgrade from Vista, can’t change my mind.

I'm probably the only dude who doesn't mind Windows 8 (or atleast 8.1) at all. Though I have an extension which basically turns the start menu into what it should have been and that's been working out ever since. But then again, I shouldn't need to use an extension to make something that worked in the first place rather than completely throw the option out of the window just for an XBOX interface, so it's still on Microsoft for making a cruddy decision. Atleast it wasn't as bad as Vista. That OS was just destruction from the start.

McAfee is probably the worst anti-virus software that I've ever used. Somehow at one point it got completely fucked up and neither me or my mom could use our desktop (you have to log into McAfee after you log into your desktop or you can't do shit)
