ESG people, thank you for your work. You're killing it and I appreciate it. Are there any plans to gather/report on manufacturer reliability over time? It seems like, with cars, we have a lot of data to tell us how things really work out over time, whereas this channel is almost entirely "initial quality", which, with this kind of product seems like a particularly sketchy... vector. How often do things break and how much of a hassle is it? Example: in 1995, my mom wanted a car and I recommended a Toyota. Based on the data, Toyotas were not just a little bit more reliable than Kias, they were in a very different league, even at similar price points. Toyotas were better than Fords, but Fords were better than Kias, and Kias were so bad that they really shouldn't even have been on the American market. The only people who bought them were either very clueless, or very desperate, or both. Anyone who bought a Kia in 1995 over a Toyota with 100k miles on it was STILL making a huge mistake. You see what I mean? And informed people knew that. It's not really an opinion. Anyone who recommended a Kia to my mom in 1995 would have been costing her time and money. That's FACTS. I could have kicked the tires on Kia, then on a Toyota, and said the "build quality" seems "solid" but that is meaningless and you KNOW it, ESG. I'd prefer you didn't even say it if there was no attempt to prove a difference. Anyway, just curious if that was coming. I see that there are three types of companies in this space: 1. Old companies like DualTron who design and build their own stuff 2. Companies of questionable origin and intent who experiment with different configurations of cheaply available parts, slap a name on it, and sell it, and 3. Something in between 1 and 2 But these reviews never seem to acknowledge the tremendous gap in customer experience that I imagine exists here just as it does in cars. I feel like I've been in this scooter world for a while now and I have no way of distinguishing between a really fun fast piece of short-lived junk, and something that is really intended to last through reasonable use. I'm staring at a bunch of scooters and they may all LOOK like Toyotas, but I'm starting to think maybe they're ALL 1995 Kias? Maybe the industry isn't mature enough for non-hobbyist buyers yet? What's the longest you've heard of ANY Apollo scooter being kept and ridden? What kind of maintenance was involved and how long did it take? Honestly the lifespan on electric scooters in general seems to be in the months, at best, not years. Am I crazy? Anyway, thank you ESG, you are great. Keep being great. Love the live show too. Ya'll all building something really cool.

Wow David, Always appreciate your insightful comments. We would love to take it to that level. The closest we've been able to come to that is the content we've made based on the rider's survey, but it has never really been the central subject of the surveys. (end of the page here electric-scooter.guide/blog/2021-survey-results/) It would make a really interesting central subject for the next survey. -Paul

I just purchased the new version of this with pneumatic tires and am happy with it overall. Other than your complaints about the solid tires (now resolved), the finicky brakes are definitely the weak point; they work well to stop the scooter, but drag frequently and need adjustment. I'm hoping to replace them with hydraulic brakes to make them less fiddly. Mine were at least adjusted reasonably from the factory and did not require any tweaking to at least give good braking performance out of the box. This was my first scooter and I debated between this and other single-motor options with about half the total motor power in the same price class, and was (after testing it out) very happy I went with the Pegasus. I live in a hilly area and wasn't sure how much power you actually need. This scooter keeps up fine going up even steep hills, but in single-motor mode it's very slow on moderate grades and any lower-powered single-motor scooter would have similar problems. You can get better scooters at this power or more, but nothing that also has full suspension, equivalent or better range, at a similar price. With the new pneumatic tires soaking up some of the bumps, the slightly stiff suspension is just fine and I can ride it over just about any patch of rough pavement without any issues at all. Would definitely like to see you review the new version and find out how you think it compares.

What helps me decide if I want a scooter with solid tires or not is whether or not I will need to use it as a reliable method of transportation, in which I would probably be on well-paved roads and rely on never getting a flat so I can actually get to where I'm going reliably. Air-filled tires are great if I off road or want to have fun and don't rely on it for transportation.

A couple years ago I was talking to some guy who had a $1K scooter and he told me "always get non flat tires". He was saying that any scooter that comes with regular tires is a flat tire waiting to happen. Why? Because the tire is ALWAYS In use. I don't think endorsing people to "not get to know the nuts and bolts of of your scooter" is bad advice. Any scooter, no matter what brand, will need adjustment of some sorts. My Eagle One needed both brakes adjusted, as well as the entire cockpit controls adjusted. Plus, it's advisable to regularly check for any lose bolts. Never assume your scooter just works, because you could get stranded, damage your scooter and even hurt yourself.

Great review Paul! The Varla Pegasus is a solid option at that pricepoint. There is also the Dualtron Compact for dual motor solids. However, the Dualtron is over twice the price. I have almost a 1000 miles on my Dualtron Compact. I love the worry free nature of solid tires but do miss high speed cornering and the cushier ride with pneumatics. I can give up the high-speed cornering and a little comfort for the peace of mind of not ever being left stuck because of a flat. It has happened to me a few times on other pneumatic tire scooters I have had in the past.
@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, Thanks so much for the comment. The Dualtron Compact seems to be a pretty rare scooter so far. (so rare, I sort of forgot about it, to be honest) Glad to hear you've got so many trouble free miles out of it so far. I'd love to test one out and see what Dualtron's take on solid tires is like. They're a really unique tread pattern. Is the tread noisy or buzzy at all? Probably gets really good traction off road. Have you tried offroading at all? -Paul

@@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide I have seen 3 in San Francisco while I was waiting at stop lights. I was shocked to see another one in the wild. I have gone on trails and it is not very good. I find solid tires just to lack traction when compared to pneumatics. This is especially true un uneven terrain. I don't find the tires to be noisy at speed.
