The enemy gets First Blood and they flame and choose 0% WR over 40% WR because... I don't know? actually, not every champion benefits in rushing mythics. some benefits more on building their non-mythic core item first. the problem w/ snowballs solely rely with some champions with a high dmg/advantage early on. to which they can easily abuse late-game scaling champs that are naturally weaker at the early phase. the only way to beat a fed snowball champion is to stall the game until your late game champs gets stronger... to which is near impossible in this season where most match ended at mid to before late game.

@@MioMillefeuille It's inherent in their design. Riot game designed an entire list of feast or famine characters and decided to "improve" them by making the famine side a lot less punishing. By logic, if they are already BEHIND and manage to get a kill for an influx of gold. Then why wouldn't they be able to kill the same target again (or more) now they are richer and have more exp? At much higher levels of play, people would play around with these characters to ensure they don't get any kills until they completely fall off or they get ahead enough so it doesn't matter. But at all lower levels of play where people are scrapping constantly or just having fun. It's only a matter of time when people get careless and then they start snowballing.

Snowballing was one of the main reasons why I stopped playing League for about 6 months. All of the mental energy, stress and pain got the better of me to the point where it was not worth playing. There is no balance between playing aggressively and passively, and it feels like playing aggressive all the time is the only way of winning, without any drawbacks to hinder it. This is going to sound a little bit spiritual, but similar to yin and yang (the passive and active energy), neither of them can be without the other. Too much yin you need yang, and too much yang you need yin. This game's snowballing feels like drinking yang-ale than yin-juice. You'll never get a chance to plan out a comeback, because the enemy team can pretty much act like unstoppable rabid bulldogs for how much they want. So in conclusion, just because you make the game fast-paced and entertaining for viewers, does not equal fun for players. They become stressed and anxious for trying to not make any single mistake ever.

And by the way, did I need to remind you that this is a MOBA-game, a genre which requires five players to WORK TOGETHER? I was really interested in your discussion of vision as a factor in the snowball problem because I was actually talking to my friends last night about how hard it is to reestablish vision control once you lose it, if the enemy team places wards even semi-competently you'll need multiple sweepers to clear them out, reducing the number of wards your own team can place, which in turn makes it so the enemy needs less time to clear your wards and can put down more of their own leaving you forever on the backfoot since you simply cannot get more wards anymore.

Sure, Jinx comes online a -lot- sooner than she used to, just getting Kraken Slayer and Runaan's is enough to become frightening in teamfights, but it doesn't really matter if there's a Talon on the enemy mid that's roaming all over the map and getting kills in every lane, while our mid lane struggles to even get farm without him there. It used to feel as though there were always opportunities to come back, not just sometimes. Even now I do still get games where things are stalled long enough that my late-game team starts rolling over theirs, but every new champion released seems to be strong at every point of the game, or has one gimmick that's just unbelievably powerful. I've been playing since 2010 and have never once gotten above Bronze, and in the current state of the game I don't believe I ever will. Which sucks. Thanks for the video! (Also, for my take on turret plates, as it was a change I never actually liked. Keep tower durability, remove gold reward. It was unnecessary and sped the game up -way- too much.)
@Stolanis3 жыл бұрын
There is one thing I will say in favour of turret plates. As a guy who likes to play squishy, immobile mages mid, it's really nice to have a way of gaining gold when my hyper-aggressive assassin lane opponent inevitably gets bored of my defensive playstyle and roams. I try to follow if it's safe to do so but most of the time it isn't, so sitting mid and pushing the wave to try and get a plate or two is a nice way to capitalise - assuming of course that the enemy assassin doesn't just double kill botlane every time they roam. It forces laners to make a choice: do I roam and help the team, potentially letting my opponent get plates, or do I stick around to maintain lane pressure at the cost of helping my team?

@@Stolanis The way you win assassin lanes is by playing carefully and patiently, but never stop spam shoving the wave under their turret. If they roam, you should be healthy enough to shove yet again and make them lose at least one wave. A common mistake when playing against assassins is staying back and fearing their all ins. That's fair, but as a mage you should have superior range, poke, and waveclear, so you should be instead spacing properly, poking them down, and spam shoving the wave. If they move, they lose CS, and that's the idea. Still play carefully and patiently, but don't give them any edge, assassins capitalize on mistakes and passiveness. They expect you to fear them and make bad choices because of it. Even without turret plates, this still works. Hence why assassins stopped being in the pro play meta years ago, even before turret plates were a thing. Always remember: mages usually outscale assassins, and can stop them fairly easily.

I feel like snowball got almost unbearable when the items got reworked. It felt like everyone was just getting out of base and oneshotting each other. And since then most of item changes have been nerfs. I feel like the items give too much stats just for having them completed and it's to the point, that if you're only player on the map with finished first item, you can pretty much force any play you want. Also I'm not a fan of being literally forced to buy one of the four mythic items or bleeding out on stats and that's the part that made me disgusted by season 11. The items are cool I'm a big fan of seeing stuff like galeforce added to the game, but the value on these (I mean kraken slayer feel like fullbuild 100% of the time) is too large and the mythic system is boring af, since you know damn well you are going to build one of those four items every single game. I don't think that snowball is inherently the problem, it's just one way to approach leads in a game There can be positive feedback loops (snowball), where its easier for the leading player to get a lead, negative feedback loops (comeback mechanics) , where its easier for the losing player to get leads, and no feedback loops at all. Many sports have no feedback loops, as at the end of every score everyone returns to the same starting position (though maybe there is still a bit of snowball throughout rounds, but that's debatable) Mario Cart has comeback mechanics, as losing players get better powerups FPS games without respawns like csgo or valorant have snowball, as every kill leaves the other team at a permanent man disadvatage what's different between shooters and league is, that in shooters if the snowball has gone out of control, the rounds are quick and you can try again easily. In league, getting on the losing side of the snowball means that for the next 10-20 minutes you will be fighting a losing battle. Not an unwinnable one, but a less enjoyable, and unless you are willing to surrender or int, it will take a while until you have the chance to try again. In legaue there is also another issue, where not all players can effect the snowball equally (assasins vs scaling adcs). This layers on with the difference in agency and makes the problem of some champions feeling broken and some useless even worse.

I disagree on the competetive shooter; Rainbow Six has no overlap between rounds, CS:GO and Valorant only have a bit of money, which is inherently capped so there is a equalizer; yeah, within a round there is much "snowball", but treat every round like a fight in league of legends, not the whole game

The player base wants a balanced game. If the game is too forgiven or too punishing, some complaints are expected. Season 10 and 11 got some nice ideas. This is the problem that DotA 2 was and still is trying to balance with multiple comeback systems (like compensating gold, reliable gold pool, buybacks, etc), especially with creep denying. It turns the game not into a race into a snowball but more or less a tug of war during early game. Dunno if I am making any sense, but that's the difference I feel about the snowballing problem between LoL and DotA 2. LoL feels like mistakes are unforgiving, while DotA 2 feels like you can still be able to crawl back with one or two very good plays down the line.

Huh? So in dota if you make a mistake like getting dived level 3 with a massive crahsed on your tower and its not gg?
@MrCleks3 жыл бұрын
@@vedaliessonmostepicfailsin5171 There is a big mechanic called "buyback", in which you can pay a hefty sum of gold to immediately respawn from base. The cost is calculated depending on your current level, current "net worth" (how much total worth of gold you are currently possessing, items included), and how far ahead your team is (both above but for the entire team). Usually the cost for buyback is around half of your next full item, and it has a very long cooldown you almost never see the 2nd buyback on the same player in the same game. And whether your buyback's cooldown is available is public knowledge so the enemy team can play around, especially against carries. Also, the teleportation system works differently in DotA 2 as well. You have to use a consumable teleportation scroll to teleport to any friendly structure / outpost on the map, which costs you a small amount of money and has about a minute for cooldown. So it's like you can go both ways, back to base and forth from base, but it's more vulnerable to cc and you only has one chance to do it so often so better make it counts. Early game it's mostly for getting back into the lane asap after death so you wouldn't lose that much tempo even when you make mistakes. A lot of other mechanics are there to make sure you can optimize your uptime while laning too (being able to buy items while away with couriers, being able to control creep waves through jungle pulling, being able to deny creeps, etc), in which most of them were removed from LoL during its inception to stand out from DotA 1 way back when to simplify it down for wider appeal.
@vesae26763 жыл бұрын
A big part of the problem is champs that have 100 to 0 potential on you in the early game. If you die once you can't farm effectively anymore because they can just jump on you and you lose every time. It would be better if you had a chance of slowly conceding farm while getting chipped but not completely having to give up gold, exp and lane priority.

As much fun it is to go ahead and stomp an entire team because you got the ball rolling early snowballing is bad for the game in my opinion. A friend and i had a discussion about this topic a while ago, and what league is missing if we compare it to a lot of competitive Games or Sports is a reset. If we look at Soccer or Basket ball or whatnot whenever a goal is scored all players reset to the middle, even with a slight advantage to the person that got scored on (as they usually get the kickoff) While in league whenever the enemy "Scores" a dragon or a kill it just spirals further and further. Imagine Soccer but everytime a Team scores a Goal, the enemy loses 1 Player on the field. That would be a horrible game. And even if we leave sports and look at other games. Yes in Valorant or CS:GO you do get a benefit of having more money to buy guns but generally you do not auto lose because of this. Also Positions and Health are Reset. even if the chance is lowered you can take down an AWP with a cheap shotgun if you move smartly. But in league there is no chance in hell that you are able to take down the lvl 16 10/1 Yasuo with an 1 item 2/7 Garen. In the end by being ahead you dont have to play as good anymore. At a certain Point you just win becasue you are fed. Not because u applied that feed and played correctly around it. Im saying this quite often but reduce the impact of kills and distribute the stats over time (less killgold, more gold over time) or something like that. You would still have the same dynamics, some champions want to finish the game early, some want to hold out till late game and so on. But you wouldnt feel bad because you died once and now you have to wait 20 minutes and pray your team votes yes. just imagine: you did ok on your lane, finished laningphase 3/1 but then you check score and see that the enemy Katarina in midlane scored 9 kills because your midlane was trying out a new champ or what and now you can just ff anyways because she can shred the entire team in 0,5 seconds while having more hp than anyone cane reasonably deal in that time. It just feels bad that you lose games because of something you have no controll over. As an ADC you can not reasonably help your struggling toplaner. But the fact that you did well is completely nullified by the enemy Akali being 8/0 now and wrecking house. It not only that you are down a Teammate that probably doesnt play too well you are now ALSO behind because one enemy is an insane damage Powerhouse. You get punished twice, for something you have no controll over. Or vice versa you get carried twice for the same effort if that akali is on your team. TL:DR You should win because you play better. Not because you played better 15 minutes ago and now can play objectivly worse and still win. PS: Bounties do not help either. Just picture your Sona on botlane "secured" 5 kills, that made her 1500 gold. But now shes worth a shutdown of 600 bonus gold. Now the enemys 12/0 Yi comes along. He has to put in almost no effort to kill her, AND he STILL gets the ENTIRE shutdowngold even though he is in NO need for any aditional gold. Plus the 900 he makes from that kill are worth MORE on him than 1500 on sona ever could be. all that while the enemy that lost to sona is still starving for gold. But that doesnt matter as Yi can at that point solocarry the entire game. Noone is having a good time here. Except for one person: Yi.

Dying in the late game is about 45 to 60 seconds + 5 to 20 seconds depending on how much towers you have left. Dying in the early game 5 to 20 seconds + 15 to 35 seconds walking all the way back to lane especially since in the early game you don't have boots yet, and even if you do, the homeguard movement speed is weaker and doesn't last as long as the one after 20 minutes. The early game home guard o ly lasts till your inhibitor towers. While the late game home guard lasts till your inner towers (if you don't attack anything or tp)

I think one thing that partially is underestimated is that people got a lot better at playing the game too. Like I remember an interview a few years back with Krepo when they talked about the M5 vs CLG.EU game that lasted forever where Froggen Anivia basically stalled the game into infinity. And while certainly there were tools introduced into the game for you to actually break that stall nowadays, if you look at how they played, strategically those teams made a lot of mistakes (of ommission mostly) at how they did not manage to close out the game or dive them. And I think that is true nowadays. Like look how many people know nowadays how to freeze a lane (at least in theory) and how many people have the basics of jungle routing down.

@GigaLigma3 жыл бұрын
I've played since season 2 and yeah, snowballing has gotten so out of hand since then and it REALLY makes the game a whole lot less pleasant to play. Everything feels so much less in the control of an individual because there are so many factors that can snowball entirely out of your control around you, and this really does frustrate people to the point of increasing overall toxicity. It makes sense if you think about it; of course a faster and more punishing game pace would result in people being constantly on-edge, and with how hopeless some matches can be even if you play the best you possibly could have, it's not hard to see why more people would ragequit.

Good video, I hope this reaches more people so they can see the real problem with lol, you have used all the points that I have been saying for years (2018-2021) about why lol is more toxic and frustrating. although i think the real problem started with the switch to adc items in the middle of the season, they made them useless, and nothing was done until the following year.

Yeah it's more intense, yeah mid game, early game you'll get bombarded in the chat, but when you win that one teamfight/skirmish everybody collectively shut up and can basically telepathically communicate with pings and simple words, you win it's euphoric, you lose it's hell and you bitch at the post game chat or say ggwp nc game

The rise of snowballing has created another side effect for players like me: offmeta picks became much more unviable. At least weak early game offmeta picks.
@dangerousshoes3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, man. A game which already frowned upon off meta picks pretty significantly, has now made them nigh unplayable.

Honestly, if you have what it takes to hold on your feet and focus on the match, you can prevent snowballing from hitting you hard. It might only be me but I'm always trying to win if there's still a chance and I try my best to encourage my teammates to do so as well. I re- started to play seriously trying to climb and I had one of the best win streaks so far, more than 90% winrate in 10+ games. A lot of them where really hard to win because noone won lane so this snowball effect starts to appear, but although in some cases we had 10k gold less than the other team, making right decisions and knowing where to be at the right moment was more than enough to overpass that disadvantage. The more videos I see from LoL the more it seems that people forget this is a 5vs5 pvp game, so you don't have to get mad if you lose your lane, later on you will join your team to fight objectives all as one, and the results of the lane phase will consolidate the strategy you have to follow as a team in order to win. Coming back from albion makes me wonder why solo queue is the most famous mode when flex should be the one, since it lets you queue with 4 known persons that you communicate with, which makes you be more competitive.

That is only possible in low Elo the higher the Elo the more dire the snowballing is but if you are playing for fun and hate to give up the community will disappoint you they spam ff at the pettiest reasons and even if there is no reason as soon as anyone decides to start the FF vote they all say yes quit disappointing honestly.
@martinrodriguez13293 жыл бұрын
@@xxx10353 Well, knowing that less than 10% of players are in plat+, I wouldn't consider myself low elo per say, and yes I do play for fun, that's mostly the idea, and although I know how people are, I rarely encounter people so pissed off that wants to ff as quickly as possible, normally I can sort of talk that out and agreed to keep playing the game until is over, whether he's mad or not .

A few minor corrections 1. Vlad either wants to instant kill or instant kill. AFIK, phase rush is just used for escaping or catching survivors of his initial combo. 2. Supports actually have less gold late game. Its roughly ~500g less around the 35-40 minute mark.

it could be because I don't play ranked that often, but I feel like the game hasn't changed all that much from when I started last season. and it could also be because last season was just as bad with snowballing, but my games in norms are still around 30-40 minutes. with the occasional 20 min ff on either side
@tiagoramalho65843 жыл бұрын
i believe snowball its whats making league such a bad game, snowball is the reason there's toxicity since you just need 1 player to lose his lane to lose the game and thats when toxicity comes in, no one wants to lose a game because someone else played poorly, and theres no comeback from that unless the enemy team makes a mistake, if your top or mid plays bad and loses lane, no matter how good you play their enemy laner will take over and the best you can do is either ff or hope the enemy makes a big mistake, and in my opinion this is why league is so toxic, no one likes to lose because someone else played badly

I always have the mentality that you always have a chance to pull of a comeback. As a dota2 player once said: "One bad fight late game is all it takes to lose a game" Kinda old school view but hey it helps :D
@MrRedseth3 жыл бұрын
In competitive, games tend to lag because it's rather hard to push to end without acing the enemy team. If the defending team has enough wave clear they can defend even against nashor buff. Then if the attacking team makes a mistake and gets aced late into the game it can mean instaloss. The elder buff should be more decisive but it seems to me pros still don't risk the dives to end the game by acing.

Snowballing is also impacted by how every lane or jungle can be the main damage dealer and carry of the team, any lane win can translate into an early victory if played right.

Then irealia 3/0/1 came and we litteraly couldnt do anything, siriously anything. i'm a yuumi main and in one game with my top laner duo we were doing pretty well, like *really* well. we basically 2v5 the enemy team, took their first inhib etc but then we got caught up in one unfortunate teamfight... enemy 3/6 yasuo used his passive and i got caught by that wind thingy mid air trying to jump to my mid laner for heal, we insta died to his ult...then my top laner was alone 1v5 (cause our jgl and adc were already dead) and died as well, they took our nexus before any of us could even respawn....so we literally only lost because i wanted to heal our mid laner instead of afk-ing on my duo. feels like riot is encouraging yuumi players to just play save and afk instead of rewarding them for active teamplay...
