The skills are also hard (maybe not rocket science), but the game mechanics are lot of work to get right. Passion is always der. I feel passion is more. But it's more passion with no skill, so that becomes day dreaming. Becoz not everyone likes the typical IT job. People want to try a lot of different things. They lack the discipline and hard work to learn and acquire complex skills and also lack access to good tools. Vfx is different vs actual coding, game engine are all complex. That's why India does more of outsourced vfx work than actual creative design, coding etc. And if passion is lacking as you say, then Indians only want to consume rather than create. And let the creation work done by others. Then this is laziness or maybe a cultural mindset. I really don't know exactly what Indians are passionate about. Majority of the things are just cheap copies or rip offs.

As a person with Chinese background, and also my understanding of the demographics of India: China did not suddenly make a triple A game overnight as you mentioned. The market took around 15 years of maturing, from low budget domestic RPG games to flagship mobile phone games like Genshin to test the waters. India as far as I know thrived in domestic pop culture like Bollywood, but rarely touch the gaming market as much as China. It would be best for India to start off with good mobile games that have positive international feedback, then move on to larger console and PC games. It is a shocker that India, with immense man power and peak tech engineers to miss out this huge market gap in India. Much more crucial in my perspective for India, is to find a fusion between traditional Indian art and modern technology. It feels like the traditional side of India and the modern part of India is completely isolated at the moment, which is not ideal for representing your culture internationally.

As an "Indian gamer" who always had the privilege of playing different games across multiple platforms, I never felt like I belonged to the community here. Either people bash you for being too privileged, or fail to understand the importance of video games as serious industry. I personally know people who make a lot of money but will never purchase a legitimate copy of a video game. For this very reason, I stopped working for Indians in the gaming scene a long time ago. I am a game developer, and trust me, we can build AAA games in India. The only problem is whether the game can repay the investors and if global players will accept it. Just look at the film industry, only a few films have been accepted in foreign countries. For example, despite having a big budget and extensive marketing, films like Kalki didn’t get accepted by international audiences. The thing about Wukong is that everyone around the world has heard about the Monkey King story. Their cartoons and movies were already globally popular, giving them an advantage when working on the game. When they released posters and demos, the world was already interested because they were familiar with the character and connected with it through movies and animation series. To my knowledge, we don’t have any such character or story from India that is globally recognized. When people talk about India, they often think of poverty, chicken tikka masala, or Gandhi. There isn’t a story or character we can sell to the international audience. Obviously, we can’t make a game about Gandhi fighting the British with his stick because Gandhi’s freedom struggle was about non-violence. Additionally, we can’t make money from the Indian market because the majority of people don’t have high-end laptops or PCs at home. Even working professionals in IT or other industries who have high-end PCs are unlikely to pay ₹2500-3000 for a game when they can download it from torrents.

How many vietnamese are rich enough to play 3A games? just take a look at the amount of vietnamese in steam or console sales in vietnam then figure out if the market can make a 3A game profitable in domestic market. You can try to aim for international market, but what is the chance they are going to like vietnamese style content? You still need a strong domestic market first to at least absorb the majority of the sales just like wukong. Then the question is why? soft power projection of course. Hollywood, Kpop, Anime all brought incalculable benefit to their country of origin, much more than what money they can earn. It makes a country a trend maker and it benefits all products and services associated with the country. A few more wukong-like success and you will start seeing the rise of Cpop worldwide or Chinese movies worldwide. Indian gaming professional here - Good summary! Here are my 2 cents: - Gaming is high art. We have not done it well with animation industry as of date in India for the last 2 or 3 decades, let alone gaming. - Having high end technology is akin to having an expensive pencil and that alone does not make you an excellent artist. The missing pieces are compelling story telling skills and extra ordinary visualisation skills. A combo of these two are rarest gemstones one can find. This won't come just because we have funding, or tech. - The few Indian gaming companies are copying other globally successful games(mostly casual or mobile games), with MAY BE a few trivial changes here and there. - When it comes to engaging the player, patience is the name of the game. I have not seen one company putting in the discipline and patience in building a really successful and truly delightful casual game, let alone AAA from India. Summary: Patience, discipline, compelling story telling skills, brilliant artistic abilities are gravely missing. We have all the money, talent, and resources. Honestly, with the current mindset of any average entrepreneur, we can't build successful games, let alone great games.

Can India make a AAA Game? no. you talk about unreal, do you know how much resources is required to produce game designers that can use unreal effectively? it took China 15 years from when they started training on unreal to develop it talent pool to what it is today. it not like you can drag anyone with a game development degree and he is able to produce the quality for a AAA Game. it goes deep if you want to create the best game, you have to become the best in the field first. AAA is not "entry level" and you can't use entry level designers who doesn't know what they are doing. furthermore AAA game ROI is not good, so it does not make sense for anyone to upstart in the game industry making AAA Game, Wukong is their 3rd game after they have develop their team to take this challenge. as to market, domestic market is really not important since game function effectively as retailable services, just like how you can sell Indian software to global market, you can sell Indian game to global market, the market penetration of India itself is not that important. of course for Wukong, they did take advantage of their domestic market, but it is not a requirement to be successful, it is just harder to capture the global market which is more competitive. I do game development in Singapore, we hardly have an domestic market. on government policy, you can attempt to attract major studio to establish a base in a city, and build a digital media cluster around that city. possibly tax free, with free office space, get them to come and they will figure out how to create the talent you need, and once these talent exist in India, they can found their own companies. lastly the point of outsourcing, you imply it is difficult to outsource the development of games. when it reality most of the work in Wukong and many AAA games are outsource, and this is the result of the production cycle of game is irregular, another words, you need different people for different duration for different stages of development, if you hire everyone to work inhouse, you will have to keep hiring and firing people continously, it is just easily to outsource a different part of the development to different specialised studios that can then pack their schedule by working for several different games. watch the credit carefully, and you will see there are alot of outside involvement in games development. this is why I mention you need to build a digital media cluster, because these companies don't standalone, they support each other and offer each other services. as to sensitivity of Indian culture and religion, that you maybe right. in which case you can simply choose not to make historical game and focus on future or scifi. why I make games is because I can make anything. the most important thing about game development is not to limit yourself to an idea on what a game can and cannot be. if you describe to a 100 people, the concept of flappy bird, 98 of them will say it a stupid idea, yet that "stupid idea" works, and people are willing to play it. you don't have to make your game like everyone else. i hope that can inspire some to try their wildest ideas.

Gamer: this game plays like it was made by someone who was making a game they wanted to play themselves. So many games nowadays play like they’re trying to manipulate you. This one just feels genuine. One can really feel the heart the developers pour into this Game. When the producer of the game, Feng Ji, was a still fresh college graduate, he wrote a magazine column "Why Games Fail". He went into quite a bit of details of the Chinese gaming industry at the time, but the main point he had was that developers don't play their own games anymore. To him, a game can only be successful if the guys who made the game in the first place had an unstoppable urge to create something fun, and even after years of working on the game, they are still excited to play it. Seems like this is still the mindset Feng has decades later, with millions of dollars of budget on the line.

Game Science Team had to go out and scan their assets specifically because Megascan and Quixel doesn't have a lot of assets specific to Chinese Architecture and Environments. The sculptures, statues, cave carvings, all needed to be scanned and incorporated. I forsee this being a problem for Indian cultural specific content as well.

One of the biggest problem is most Indian teenagers don't even have a pc, even if they have, it's a regular one. We also don't even a high-end phone that can support the game. That's why free fire blew up more than pubg. I still remember there was only one rich kid in my class that could afford to play pubg, maybe 5-10 people at max in our entire school and it was a private school. And also job vacancies are pretty low so most people either keep grinding upto middle age or continue their family buisness. Ultimately, most people don't even think about these luxuries. The ps5 has sold 1 million units in India which is again above average but it's better than nothing. I saw a kid in a game store in a mall, he wanted to buy 2 games but had money for only one, he wanted The last of us 2 Remastered and Dying light2 for ps5, so I bought him DL2, earlier he didn't accept as I was a stranger but then I gave it to him as a gift, honestly the best feeling in the world. The cost of entry into proper AAA gaming is very high in India. Earlier it was only hardware but now even software clients like Steam have ditched regional pricing. Earlier Steam games used to be priced according to purchasing power of the country, nowadays it's directly 60$-70$ converted to ₹5k. Also the basic idea of what a 'video game' should be is very much flawed here. Indie games and platformer type games don't get respect as people think they are made for kids. Indian rookie gamers prefer graphics over gameplay. This same thing used to happen with anime few years back until the advent of OTT after which people started respecting the idea of animation being a proper medium for storytelling and not just limited to kid's entertainment. Hopefully things change. As a country of 1.4 Billion people one can only imagine the potential of a gaming market.

1) Gaming in India is a luxury. 1 lakh for a pc build along with games ranging from 3-5k. Good luck convincing parents to buy these. Also some families(even today) aren't earning enough to eat or have a sustainable life. 2) India is very sensitive when it comes to hindu mythology. People have backward thinking. Government is backward too. Hate crime in the name of religion happens everyday in India. Good luck convincing them anything related to hindu mythology. 3) Development whether it's a game, website or anything is like a passion. There's every potential outside this country that can skyrocket my career, yet I choose to stay home hoping that someday things will change. I guess it takes an orthogonal individual like me: a misfit for other markets and not so perfect skills for the FAANG market, to attempt at something like this. It Doesn't mean we can't achieve this level of Success. This may be true. Growing up in Mumbai, we had the resources to go to lamington road to buy cheap parts for assembling decent gaming PCs . But to build a game development setup from this is near impossible. I remember an animator friend of mine who was working on a short film, leaving his computer on throughout the day to render 5 seconds worth of frames while he went to work. Bonus: Just like how Elden Ring got so popular even though other Fromsoft games like DarkSouls didnt, was because it came out in a time where the market was saturated with trash games. Easy, in comparison, India has a very radical society to the world. A AAA game is an art form which needs the wings of creativity and freedom to which, the Indian population will always raise criticism and potentially violence against the developers and the company developing the said game. Imagine a product that is so hampered by your own country's people, politicians, bureaucrats and investors, one would simply accept their losses and move on rather than making a game like Wukong in India.

The answer is simple there are not enough pc gamers in india , which is the sad truth. Which is partly because of how much games are costing now a days as well as the entry cost of owning a decent gaming rig. The sad part is i have seen people justify a almost 100k rs phone while saying getting a pc is useless.
