Well as of today the big news is Vassi can't pick up shots from distance so. Screen and tip makes it ten times harder.

Idk why people keep saying this.. Even popular NHL pundits. this isn't news, Lalonde didn't expose anything that hasn't already been talked about in the league for years now lol. This has been a very well known thing about his game for some time. I remember last years playoffs people talking about how the Leafs should have done this more, due to his struggles from the point.

Great point they were definitely already know at the Goaltending coaches and the National Hockey League or Premier guys. They spent 1617 hrs. a day at their craft and if Vasilevskiy is a barrier keeping them from the cup, they're gonna be all over him on video

A lot of teams (Rangers, Avalanche, Leafs come to mind) are clearly aiming blocker side on him and are finding a lot of success. His blocker saves can be awkward biomechanically, his hand is often next to his body rather than in front. Also, he's almost comically off angle on the Rielly G4 tying goal.

I never really thought he was the dominant goalie everyone else thought he was. Good yes but not a guy that can carry a team. Granted my goaltending experience is limited to high school and below in the 90s but I still understand the position. He has benefited from very good teams in the past you compare him to say Price(when healthy, the few times it was) Price is a significantly better goaltender. Goalies now are more about the system they play in than their actual skill. They are all tall, lanky and use their size and side to side movement more than actual athleticism. That's not to say that goalies now aren't athletic, they just aren't as much as they use to be. I saw a pic recently of someone and I forget who it was trying to do a 2 pad stack, and it looked awful. The rvh I will never understand, I know they say the percentages are to play it but I see so many times a year a goalie get beat right over the shoulder in that position. Just stand up and let the puck hit you.

as someone who played jr. a, i can tell you vasilevskiy absolutely was the dominant goalie everyone made him out to be, and is one of if not the sole reasons tampa was able to compete at all. he may be on a "good team," but look at all the people who have backed him up in the years he's been with the team... they've never even come close to putting up the numbers he does. you could argue that vasilevskiy *is* the tampa bay lightning, because when he's not playing it becomes abundantly clear how flawed the lightning are as a team. price, on the other hand, absolutely *is* extremely overrated, and apart from their finals run, was more often than not the reason the habs were losing games over the last few years. make no mistake... price had his moments and was a very competent goalie for most of his career, and he did clutch up for montreal at times when they needed him most... but one of the best canadian goaltenders of all time? the best goalie in the world? better than vasilevskiy? not by a long shot.

@@derps8690 No he wasn't he played on a dominant team that helped him look good. That same core of a team still exists and plays now and now all of the sudden he doesn't look as good. Why because he was never the "dominant" goalie he was thought to be. They guy is in the prime of his career now and is allowing 3-4-5 goals a game. So what is the excuse for his play this year? The team in front of him isn't a good? Right as most will say well then that further proves the point that he has benefited greatly from a dominant team he is on.

@@brianlb78 he's getting lit up because his team is doing a terrible job getting the leafs out of his way. nearly every goal that has gone in on him in this series has either been a deflection or a one timer... he has still shown flashes that he's an amazing goaltender with top athleticism, but he can only do so much, especially after the lightning have been playing him almost every game now for the last few years because of how unreliable his backups are. also, i don't know what you mean "his play this year"... he still finished the year with a .915%, which is still really good, especially given the fact that he has played *60 games.* his gsax, overall save % and his vezina/conn smythe awards beg to differ with your opinion of "he let in 3 goals, he sucks!!!!!!" maybe you just don't like the fact that a black man knows more about hockey than you, but that's just me.

Well, I'm glad you're not my Goalie Coach. Everyone has an opportunity to stop every shot. It just comes down to concentration, a game, plan, positioning, and good coaching. Vasilevskiy will be the first one to tell you that he would've love to get those screenshots or to flexions and he's a highly competitive person. Take the time to enjoy the contact. It's much more fun that way.

I have a bit of input since I've played goalie for a long time and trained in a hockey academy with a goalie coach for 4 years. I'm not a professional, but Vasilevsky's positioning when people are at the point looks atrocious to me, and he does nothing to the people in front of him. He's craning. This makes his drop significantly slower. It makes his slides far slower and less powerful. It's *also not even the best way to see the puck through a screen.* I have a bad habit here too, which is the complete opposite. I duck so low that I'm basically looking under people's legs. Thing is, even tgat gives you better movement and positioning *and* grants a far better visual since the puck is on the ice. If something is lower, you can more consistently see it if you approach its level. If Vasi was 6 foot 7, then fine. He's tall at 6 foot 4, but that's not enough for yhis to be effective. I think that's why he has formed this bad habit, though. He's quite tall, and so has been using this shortcut the entire time he's played goal. But is in fact a shortcut. It's just bad positioning for an NHL goalie. The 2nd big problem, and a lot of goalies in the NHL seem to have this issue, he should be shoving the f*** out of the people in front of him. Kerfoot could only get that goal because he was completely unbothered, freely working the front of the net. You don't get your blocker or stick involved, but you should be trying your hardest to shove people to the ground with your glove if they're getting right in front of you. Its the #1 best way to maintain visual of the puck: *removing the screen.*
