I’m white, but I’ve always had friends of all races. So I didn’t experience racism against myself, but hanging out with black friends, or Mexican or Native American friends is all it took to really understand that racism definitely exists! I’ll never forget the horrible feeling I had when I realized my friend was being treated badly simply bc of her skin color. We were in grade school and it was my first encounter with the ugliness of racism. It really hurt my heart to know she had to deal with that, not all the time of course, but a lot. And through the years, I’ve seen it with lots of friends. Maybe if I only had white friends, I wouldn’t have had that experience, and I’d be prone to thinking racism doesn’t exist. I would hope I’d be smarter than that, but who knows? The thing that is so difficult about the subject is that you can pass laws against racist behaviors, but you can’t legislate how people think. When people continue to be racist, they bring that with them everywhere: their interactions with others, their work, their recreation, shopping, etc. and it affects all those things. There are so many levels to it also. People can lie about their beliefs, yet act in horrible ways. People aren’t always honest with themselves about their beliefs. Institutional racism is also a complex issue. It can exist even though there are laws against it, and sometimes the laws themselves are the problem. I don’t know why some white people insist so loudly that there is no problem. Maybe it’s ignorance, maybe something more sinister. But why do they feel qualified to say it? They haven’t lived life as a person of color, so how do they know what they’ve experienced? I wish people would be more open minded and willing to learn and change their mind. It’s the only way we can get past this. Sometimes I wonder how it is that humans have walked on the moon, yet we still haven’t figured out how to get along with each other! Sometimes I think it behooves the rich and powerful to have the rest of us arguing amongst ourselves, bc then we will never become a threat to them. Other times, I think it’s just rampant ignorance that can eventually be overcome with education and time. Although, after the trump presidency, I think the latter is less likely, unfortunately. There’s no easy answer, and that sucks. But decent people have to be willing to call it out when it occurs, we can’t just ignore it bc it’s not happening to us. Anyway, sorry for the long rant, but I think it’s a hugely important subject, and something we should talk about. Thanks Vaush, for being a voice of reason. You have a big platform and I’m glad you’re talking about these things. TLDR; Racism sucks!

Not to mention, it wasn't "right wingers" who pushed and passed Jim Crow laws or kept them going. It was Democrats, but...but...."the party switch". Oh, isn't that convenient, a "party switch" that absolves Democrats of their racist history and blames it on the other side. Seems a little too convenient, right? Probably because it is. It has been debunked countless times. How many Dixiecrats switched to the Republican side? One. The rest stayed Democrats. They had a "former" recruiter (for the organization that has 3 K in its name) as a senator in their party until the day that he died (2010), at which point the Clintons and the rest of them lined up to talk about how much of mentor and great person he was.

@Lectical
@Lectical 3 жыл бұрын
@Joe Maleski the easiest example is explicitly racist housing policies from the 30's to the 70s that denied black people loans and corralling us into ghettos that weren't invested in. This led directly to the de-facto segregation we still see the remnants of in cities and suburbs. This also means black homeownership was lowered by racism, and those homes that would have been passed down as intergenerational wealth never could. This is an example of explicitly racist policy that contributes to the disproportionate black poverty rate and wealth gap that exists now. Vaush has many videos about this if you're interested. Look for his response to Ben Shapiro talking about systemic/institutional racism. It's easy stuff once you're educated about it. Cheers.

I like both James Lindsay and Helen Pluckrose. Their grievance studies were pretty hilarious. I actually think he has some pretty good segments on New Discourses. I really liked his most recent one on authenticity. Personally, I've heard and read a lot of both pro and anti CRT arguments, and there are a lot more bad interpretations of it than good ones. I do think Vaush makes some good points, but this Prager video is a pretty accurate interpretation of CRT as far as a anti CRT perspective goes. Bad CRT interpretations are being implemented in schools and work places. These segregated training sessions fall flat on their face when they literally segregate individuals based on a color swatch while discussing "whiteness", and dismiss any dissenting opinions as evidence of "white fragility". If CRT training sessions were set up as an open debate, that allowed people to disagree, I think that could create some genuine understanding as well as be beneficial for both skeptics and believers alike. I say this because CRT is mainstream and this idea that it can simply be removed and boycotted as a solution for those against it, is as ridiculous as saying those who disagree with CRT should just switch schools and or jobs, or comply. I would be interested in hearing a discussion and or debate between Vaush and Lindsay. Also, just a side thought. I can't speak for all conservatives, liberals, or whatever political ideology that is fearful of CRT. For myself, I do find aspects of it raise red flags. The validation of white privilege bothers me the most. I find it counter productive as well as dangerous to implement aspects of white supremacist theories. It's entirely likely that many children as well as adults might believe the concept of skin color denoting a kind of inherent caste hierarchy, which undermines the idea of equality completely. Historically, segregationist thinking based on race is what got us here. I don't see how this new form of segregation based on race will lead anywhere positive. As far as why CRT is mainstream, I would guess it has less to do with some kind of intricate conspiracy, (although I have seen some pretty interesting videos on this idea), and more to do with the majority of Americans actually really do care about race relations in our country, and want to help. Which is a sentiment I can understand.

I mean, if you dilute it down to just “Nazis were race conscious and CRT scholars are race conscious too!” But that seems disingenuous since nazism was all about superiority of the white race, or Aryan race, and conquering other races, while specifically being anti-Semitic for blaming them for corruption of the German ideals and Germany’s defeat in WWI. While CRT recognizes white supremacy in the institutions or history of US legal systems, and believes a color-blind, incrementalist approach to redress the inequities or disparities of systemic racism that’s oppressed people of colors, particularly blacks, is inadequate. Thus, a color conscious approach with equity in results is the proper solution to redress the problems created by white supremacy or racism. Also, your assessment is ignoring the centuries of white race consciousness that existed in the US leading up to the formation of CRT scholarship.

The question of "who would you help first, the black or the white customer?" Really does beg the question of what would conservatives do? They would go to the white person every time. You are a joke pal, you go on to say at around the 25 minute mark that you would take critics of CRT more seriously if they at least said racism still exists in America. Well guess what they do, including James Lindsay. Your strategy to which your fans lap up is to simply pause the video continuously and make assumptions about what the video is going to say and play outraged to mask your lack of valid criticisms, you are completely void of any nuanced analysis.

In his book against Critical Theory he even states almost verbatim precisely something that Vaush used as a rebuttal, namely that race and racism were probably created by Europeans to justify colonialism and slave trade. But even if this was only a facade for a racist bias, his arguments still stand. After all, Vaush himself admits he has strong biases (cf. 'about' page) yet we're still listening to him (hoping for compelling arguments, in vain).

@Nemo12417
@Nemo12417 3 жыл бұрын
Christianity was the dominant religion in Europe for over a millennium before the concept of natural rights came about. If natural rights are an extension of the Abrahamic faiths, why did it take so long? In the Old Testament, believers are commanded to worship Yahweh Sabaoth exclusively, and to be viciously intolerant of those who do not. Where do "natural rights" fit in with that? And finally, enough with the "Judeo Christian" buzzword. For the majority of Christian history, Christians wanted nothing to do with Jews and persecuted the "Christ Killers" within their borders. "Judeo Christian" is a modern political slogan, not one grounded in any religious realities.

In what way can the concept of human rights be directly linked to the Torah? I can easily provide examples from the Torah which refute the idea of human rights coming from that particular deity. My argument is that the concept of human rights developed slowly in spite of religious traditions, not because of them. And at every step, piety was antagonistic (unless you count the social justice-y religious types who were rejected in their day and were outside the Overton Window).

I worked in retail management, and a general philosophy in retail is that you should always greet the customer(s) and ask them if you can assist, help them find, or answer any questions about a particular product(s). There are 3 basic types of customers; buyers, browsers, and shoplifters. Corporations want good customer service for all those types, which helps the buyers, annoys the browsers, and deters the shoplifters from stealing from their store.

@@mattw7057 Islam believes that Jesus was an important prophet, but that there is a different messianic figure, the Mahdi, who will come at the End of Days, a position similar to many of the Jewish faith. However, the 3 religions are defined as Abrahamic because of their shared orgins, what Christians call the Old Testament, which why all three are also sometimes called "The Faiths of the Book". Following from that, the term "Judeo-christian values" are a set of societal moral axioms, that are also shared with Islam: broadly, be kind, don't cause harm, respect authority, love God; the exclusion of Islam is an intentional element of othering them.
