Vauxhall Corsa D Faults: Power Steering & Instrument Cluster

Vauxhall Corsa D has lost its power steering, the instrument cluster is blank, and the windows won’t open.
There may be an easy fix, though.

Good to see this video as most people don't know that even if the engine starts the battery can be too low for the car's computer programs. IF you had put the headlights on full along with the hazards and blower motor you might have had the engine cut out. Of course what you need to know now is why is the battery too low (though we know the answer to that, lack of use of the car and battery charger maintainer). Many would also blame the battery when most often it's not actually the battery at fault. Batteries can be very expensive now, especially if they need 'coding' to fit or replaced as a (often premature) distress purchase with the breakdown service at roadside.

Thanks Nta16. Interesting comment as always. Had I not connected the booster, the engine would have cut out within a few seconds (even with the lights off). I checked this off camera the previous day. Must check the alternator!

Yes, battery and alternator are a team if one is weak the other has to work harder and sometimes this can weaken the other and shorten its life, particularly if either, or both, are old.

We could get a used alternator for a modest price on eBay. Fitting it looks like a pain, though. Poor access!

Test the battery and replace if required and same for alternator, but only if required for both ETA: you're not a garage/mechanic firing the parts cannon at someone else's expense.

I agree that you need strength for no power steering! My old car (funnily enough also a corsa, but older) ran out of fuel once and I lost power stearing and only just managed to get off the 50mph road I was on

Can also be caused by a weak alternator.

How about changing the battery to see if it addresses the problem then. Ive got my doubts. If the fault was triggered on start up id agree with the battery possibility. However this happens once the car has been running for a few minutes and the alternator is pumping out power. Put a meter on it - should be 14V plus once running.

Always possible and poor electrical connections and earths could be in the mix but staters are on 12V and computers 5V so has less to drop from. If the battery is good there are tricks to fully recharge it, or recover it, as much as it will take, enough to pass a test for these issues, or show a fail by testing the battery after the car test. Lack of use is a battery killer on modern cars.
