As stated previously - I found the best method of doing the transmissions - especially the automatics - by removing the engine and transmission as one unit. I can then replace the rear main, machine the fly, replace the bearings etc, without rolling around on the ground. Takes about the same amount of labour to get it done this way and it's much better as a job.

James, I've done this very job a few times. The most recent one was on my 2002 Citroen Xsara Picasso to replace the clutch. I had to remove the gearbox again because I had trouble engaging the gears and the input shaft needed some more lubrication. It was fine after that. I face the prospect of having to replace the clutch on my Celica which is something I wouldn't normally relish (it will make for great content on my own channel). It is an absolute struggle on your own so I feel your pain. I suspect that the noise could've been the release bearing. It sounded graunchy when you were spinning it. I understand you not replacing the clutch on a car that is going to get sold once the work has been done.

oh man you shoulda opened up the gear box before scrapping it to see how it all works, i mean i learned about my starter motor this way, so easy to strip and save £50 as there cheap to repair (btw a failing starter motor only needs a good clean and a set of bush's (£8) if that and its brand new again) btw same vecter owner here and this is a great set of vids. your content is 100% great stuff dude!

Good work! Surprised at how compact that gearbox is. Looks shorter than the 'box on the Peugeot 206 and probably just as heavy. You're spot on when saying get an assistant to help when removing or refitting a gearbox - it's a lot safer and less risk of injury. I highly recommend getting an adjustable transmission cradle to fit on a workshop trolley jack if you're going to be doing more gearbox swap jobs in the future.

@@Stop..carry-on : he stands more chance selling it with a new 3 in 1 clutch kit fitted and get a better price for it also that bearing was that noisy it was probably the bearing at fault and not the gearbox at all , so for the cost of a second hand gearbox that would have paid for the clutch kit. it would be a real shame if he puts that all back together with the same clutch and bearing and the noise is still there.

Good job wrestling that gearbox out and in! On an American front engine, rear drive car there’s nothing like rolling under the car on a creeper with the gear box on your chest. Then it’s a simple matter of lifting (oof) it into place. I couldn’t help thinking that it might have been easier removing the engine/gearbox as a unit then removing the gearbox.
