Joker 2 flopping and then Wicked smashing records soon after reminds me of the Key and Peele "Loco Gangster" sketch where he tries to break a bottle on his head and fails, then goes "This bottle is unbreakable!" Then he tosses it on the floor and it breaks.

@@BonJoviBeatlesLedZepbecause doing a good musical actually requires talent. First off, Phoenix is bad in his singing portions. And no, I don't buy the excuse of "keeping it realistic" because they autotuned it a lot. Second, you need the musical numbers to progress the plot. This is the equivalent of those old indian movies, where it randomly does a musical number that does nothing but increase the runtime

@@BonJoviBeatlesLedZepyou can’t compare Wicked to this movie. The Joker movie tried to hide that it was a musical. Wicked is openly and proudly a musical (based off the broadway show). Other musical movies have done well because they don’t try to hide it (Hairspray, Rent, The Greatest Showman). This movie doesn’t have the vocal chops to be a musical (you need more than 1 talented singer to have a musical).

Nobody would have cared to watch Joker if it were not for the title. The same actor- Joaquin Phoenix just last year did a movie called Beau is Afraid (has mommy issues, is a virgin and wants love, is a mentally ill loser living in a very bad city, and has lots of delusions- oh sounds awfully similar to Arthur) and nobody saw it.
@sathrielsatanson6665 күн бұрын
That is not the problem of Todd Phillips' Joker movies. The problem is that they are not that good. He has some interesting ideas about deconstructing Joker: fascination with psychopatic killers, willingness to idolize even most monsttous behaviour, true self versus public persona and many more. The only problem is those ideas are not presented in engaging form. The first movie was a Scorsese rip off and the second is more misguided that it's protagonist.

batman and robin was a great adam west era tribute. if u think its suppose to be some dark knight i dont know what to tell you. its an adam west tribute and it captures that energy rather well. whilst it is sad to see such a cool character like bane regulated to the role he was given as example, mr freeze is absolutely hilarious to watch. arnold is putting effort into his role and is eating the scenary masterfully. whilst not everything works of course, if u look at the film with the correct lens and dont expect some dark knight crap in every film. its a hilariously stupid film. just as stupid and hilarious as adam west batman could be. and id rather watch that and the Toby Maguire spider man films as example over man of steel, the dark knight trilogy, any of the more newer marvel crap, and a lot of things along those lines. whilst those films all have positives. they have so many flaws that everyone overlooks and have become way to overhyped despite extremely obvious flaws.(mostly talking about the overhype of the dark knight in terms of overhype) even the bank heist scene from the get go is incredibly poorly written and designed and no one mentions it. its bad. its a bad scene. is it "cool"? ya i guess. is it well written? not really. is it well acted? ya, id say so. the films need to be judged for what they are, not what you want them to be. and even the dark knight, whilst i do not like it cause of what they did to the joker, i still need to judge them for what they are. and overall they are good films. and batman and robin as a tribute to the adam west era is well done.

The biggest thing I hated about this movie was that it had all the tools and only half utilized them. It’s shot well, Gaga and Phoenix are both good, the songs were alright (the courtroom song I’d argue is great), everything is halfway there. But it drops the ball on the story structure, the chemistry between Joker and Quinzel, the songs are too far between to be a musical but too close together to ignore them. Also, the ending, if the rest of the movie was done right, would’ve been the best “fuck you” to those who idolize this version of Joker and got the wrong impression of the first movie. But since the rest of the movie fumbles everything else, the ending feels less like a “Haha! We got you!” and more a “haha we got you.”

A musical with the Joker could work if they did something like Emperor Joke in Batman the Brave & the Bold. I understand the desire to ensure the character doesn't encourage violence but other villains could have been used. Ex: The Anarchists - a young man named Lonnie Machin feels personally betrayed by the systems he was raised to believe in and trust but have all affected him personally (corrupt cop, embezzling, losing job after job due to budget cuts, etc) so he is persuaded to join a group of Anarchists led by Anarky and meets fellow Anarchists like Shrapnel (Mark Scheffer) and Bluebird (Harper Row) (even Dick Grayson could be a member as his role in the Arkham Shadow Game aka The Rats showed a criminal background can work storywise). He becomes a devout follower and street soldier vs someone like Roman Sionis or something but soon learns that Anarky is Samuel Young, a congressman attempting to profit off of street gang warfare by using/setting up the Anarchists, even going as far to base his mask vaguely off of his deceased sister. Lonnie feels so betrayed that he kills Sam and takes his place as Anarky and leading the Anarchists to true domestic terrorism. Scheffer enjoys the violence but Bluebird (and Robin) is afraid at what Lonnie has become she switches sides and helps Batman stop the emotionally broken Anarky who deep down really just wants to feel trust and hope again.
@andrewdau12996 күн бұрын
That sounds really cool tbh. I wish Anarky got more appearances outside of the comics. So far, the only adaptation that did him justice was Arkham Origins.

This movie really just felt to me like Philips wanting to convey a particular message to the audience but forgetting you need to craft an actually good narrative for it first. The whole courtroom backdrop just felt to me like just an excuse to deconstruct the events of the previous film and explain why Arthur is so bad and should not be idolized. The whole film is like him yelling "Arthur is bad and society is bad for liking him". But Philips just doesn't have the narrative or directive vision to pull that off in a meaningful way, plus like you said, he got to enamored with his own farts. Throwing a bunch of artsy stuff into the film not because it served a purpose or told a narrative but just that he thought it seemed deeper than it was and the artsy stuff enhanced it somehow. It didn't. What we got was a shallow societal critique that seemed like it was written by an edgy film school dropout and some mediocre music sequences.

Catherine Keener turning in the kind of performance that makes you wonder why they needed to drag Maura Tierney into this.

I don't know anything about the movie and as a massive fan of the first, I really find it hard to believe it's as terrible as people say. I'm excited to form an opinion when it comes out on streaming.

@ not relevant. Those were things that happened to them AFTER they became superheroes. Vee says “born from tragedy”. Which just doesn’t apply to these guys, accept for some more modern takes on their origins, like the original post-Crisis Barbara Origin, or DCAU Tim Drake, or kinda New 52 Tim. But A Lonely Place of Dying and the original and Batgirl: Year One don’t fall under this

Honestly I enjoyed Joker 2. This macabre and depressing film that showcases the idea of perpetuating an identity because it's expected of you. As much as you love that attention, you can't keep up the charade forever. People won't care about you when you presented them with something false. I liked that a lot about the film and how Harley pushes that. She fell in love with the Joker, not Arthur Fleck and when Joker was shown to not exist, she immediately left. It's not a perfect movie, I won't watch again nor will I ever recommend it to somebody, but I can comfortably say I enjoyed it even as it made me extremely uncomfortable and depressed to the point of thinking about it for like a week.

The thing is that it was already very evident and the whole point of the first movie that Arthur was NOT the actual Joker but merely a catalyte for the actual Joker to rise after his inspiration. The ending just underlines what the first movie already told us. I didn't find the musical numbers to be pointless or that they didn't carry infornation. They were giving us information about Arthur's mood swings, levels of his delusion at amy given moment, predicts what's about to happen etc etc. Did I like the movie? No, not really as it doesn't really bring anything new that would be relevant for the story and the movie was mostly just unnecessary addition that the story didn't need

I enjoyed it more than the first tbh. The musicals were really well structured, and it made sense that he was imagining it. The character of the joker has always sung, and I think his mental health was more thought out than the first film. But with this version of the character, he was never gonna get a happy ending. And lastly, I was never thinking of this Joker as a typical Batman character. It's just a more realistic mental take on that character, and I love that!
