Oh wow. Just came across this video. I also upgraded my fence to the Vegapro 40 about 8 yrs ago. I did not have to drill any new holes in my craftsman table saw which looks like yours. I’ve enjoyed this upgrade for many yrs!

Glad to have found your video. I moved from Ohio to Arkansas 2 years ago, and had to disassemble all of my woodworking machines until I built a new garage/shop. Got the machines moved to the new building, but didn't have the assembly instructions. Thanks to you, I can reassemble the fence onto my 1943 Unisaw. I appreciate ya!

Thanks Derek for the video...I installed my Vega Pro 40 in about and hour and then added an auxilliary table using the brackets on the fence system. It is a huge improvement to the saw and I look forward to using it for more complicated projects now that I have the Pro 40 and the now extension table.

Thanks for the install demo and thanks for speeding it up in some parts. So many people don't do that. I have a Craftsman 12 inch, 240 volt direct drive that I have had since the mid to late 70's and the fence that came with it is the same crappy one you started with. I upgraded years ago to an Incra. However now the saw has been replaced with a SawStop and I have managed to install both the SawStop and the Incra fences on the saw. The Incra is used for repeat-ability and the SawStop for speed and single cuts. It works great. Now I need a fence for the old Craftsman which I kept. You have helped me make a decision on a fence. Thank you for the great video.

Syncrisity, divine intervention or luck. About 7 years ago I purchased a Vega Saw Fence from the Rockler Store here in Seattle for my 12 inch Craftsman Table Saw I purchased in the early 80's. I never installed the back bar and lately was thinking about installing it. I was felling frustrated because I couldn't find the parts or the instructions. I never throw instructions or parts away so I have them stored away or hid somewhere as I don't like clutter. I was inspired by your video and now know what to look for. In the background of one of your video shots I saw a planer that resembled a Craftsman 6 Inch that I also purchased in the early 80's. Thank you

I have had this fence on a Grizzly contractor saw for more than ten years. Biggest, best upgrade I ever made on a tool. The fence is rock solid with a micro adjustment device which allows you to really dial in precision. I’m considering upgrading to a cabinet saw but I hesitate because the new saw would come with something different. Maybe I’ll swap fences before I sell the Grizzly. Love this fence!

I opted to drill new holes in the back rail square tubing of the new fence because I wanted to utilize the existing tapped holes on the table saw. I was able to match the mounting bolts of the front rail with the existing tapped holes on the saw so that went smoothly. You may have to adjust the tape measure on the front rail to match up to your saw blade and this adjustment is fairly simple. Keep in mind if you change out saw blades your tape measure may not match up. I change blades regularly for different functions so I use a tape measure to set my fence. Overall I am very pleased with the new fence.

I purchased a Vega Utiility fence 10-15 years ago when they first came out. I then upgraded to a used Delta Unisaw which came with a Beisemeyer. After using the Beisemeyer for a couple months...I still missed the Vega fence.....it is simply easier to do precision work with the Vega fence and it is sturdy enough to use on most wood light enough to be handled by one person.I replaced the Beisemeyr on my Delta.....with the Vega. If I was going to be ripping 2 in by 12 foot rough oak planks again...I would prefer the Beisemeyer but for normal 3/4 inch stock the Vega has been excellent. You can easily move it side to side with two fingers if you keep the rails lightly lubricated or waxed. When the Vegas first came out I don't think the hold down bracket was an option. I wanted to use my Lechtung spring loaded rollers ,so I had to do something on my own to keep the end of the fence from lifting up, when the rollers were in use .I made my own hold down bracket from a cutoff of extruded aluminum used for special aluminmum shipping brackets. It has a roller bearing which rides perfectly on a 5/16 shouldered bolt ...tapped into the aluminum bracket. The clearance between the bearing and underside of the rail is about .005". To mount the Lechtung rollers, I made rectangular aluminum plates that rides in the slots on top of the fence(also tapped (1/4x20) bolts) This allows me to adjust the rollers forward or backward on the fence with ease. My fingers now NEVER go near the blade ......the rollers hold the wood down snug and up against the fence when they are narrow strips. ( The rollers with constant ,consistant pressure along makes for some very smooth cuts in oak) Another improvement I made was to take some automotive compound and go over the paint job on top of the rear rail...I see from the video that the Vega factory still needs to clean up their paint department a little...there is dust falling into the wet paint. If you melt a little candle wax onto the compounded rear rail...it stays slippery for quite a while......but locks down solid when you need it. The Vega is a great way to go if you have a non production shop and actually adjust the fence often in the course of your work.

Really good video. I have a Bridgewood that I bought on Craigslist that came with a vega system. Wasn't sure exactly how it all went together. This really helped. Since my tablesaw is a right tilting saw, I'm trying to figure out if I can mount the rail system in reverse so I get the most rip capacity on the left of the blade.

Thanks for the instructions. Just purchased a Vega Pro 50 off Amazon. I originally bought a ShopFox 57 inch fence system, but they didn’t drill the holes in the front rail so that the tube rail could be attached. Was a waste of time and money. I just installed a Vega Pro 50 on my old Sears that had an even older type fence than yours it was a total hunk of crap, why I waited so long to toss it is a mystery. Money that is why but I think the price is justified as my sanity is safe now, I just love this fence. I had ths same experience with installation, one hole to drill, no big deal there other wise a simple straightforward installation. Anyone thinking about one of these should just buy one and install it and get on with your woodworking way more pleasantly than with an old junk fence, there is no comparison, a total worthwhile upgrade to your saw.

Thanks for the question, Steve The movement you see is the rear of the fence squaring itself to the front. The front of the fence has never moved. But that seems to be normal. I have had zero issues with the fence when I set it to any measurement that's exactly what my stock is when cut. I use the micro adjust all the time, it's a great feature of this model, no tapping the side to get those little movements. Steve how do you like the fence let me know?

Sorry I'm so late with this reply. I didn't realize you had answered my original question. I am quite happy with my Vega Pro 40. It took a bit to adjust it "to my liking" but now it is VERY good. I see that mine "jumps" when I lock it down, but measuring with a dial indicator from front to back I have it set OUT by .003 and the number is constant.

Thanks for the video. I purchased a Shop Fence from Grizzly for the same saw that you have and the instructions are not that clear and I have to drill holes in my table saw to mount the rails. Anyways, my thought was that you should have saved your money to get a better saw......you stated that it was never a good fence.....well....as a former service tech for Sears, the saw was never a very good saw.....I think it is a source number 113......can't remember what company made it. but the first three numbers are always the tag number for the company that made the product.....I used to have to tell the customer to take the saw back to the store, cause there were times you just could not adjust the trunnion assembly square with the slots in the table. I'm not being rude, cause I sure understand the lack of money to buy a cabinet saw. Go to an auction, and you will find a saw that will match any ones. I bought a 14 inch saw for 250.00....what a deal!! Take care friend and good luck.

Great video, thanks for sharing! I also have a Craftsman saw, and I'm curious what you did with the power switch after installing the Vega. I think yours is like mine, which is on t-track on the underside of the original rail. It seems like the Vega hangs down lower in general, but I don't even know how you'd mount the switch without that t-track. What did you do?

I bought a different switch from Rockler and mounted on a board so I can hit the large stop button with my leg. I used the original switch on another router table. Thank you for watching

i was shocked that Vega website themselves don't have a video of the installation, and if it was not for yours I don't know if I would buy it, thx . I will be using your info to install mine on Thu or Friday of this week, I should be getting it tomorrow. I wish I had a better look of it on the back side. because I am not sure that I will be able to drill a hole in my table saw in the back since the motor and the table box is back there? I have an Hitachi table saw the c10fl. that's why I was asking if anyone installed it on one of them before. in any rate thanks for you help. Nava

Thom. Can you tell me how deep is your saw from front to back without the fence? Mine is 23" and I'm trying to find out if and which vega system I can use on my Walker-Turner Tilting arbor saw. Thanks.

I just bought an old Unisaw (34-761) through Craigslist that came with a Vega Pro fence. No instructions, of course, so your video was a huge help! I saw that you have printed instructions, which I have not been able to find online. Would you mind sending me a copy?

I have the same saw and fence and love it. I saw you built a router extension table for the right side of the saw. I would like to do the same but since the front fence rail is round and needs space between it and the saw, there is nothing to attach the extension table too. Did you end up finding a way to reuse that router extension table with the Vega Fence? Thanks

My router table wing is attached to the cast iron saw table itself. I have a separate Incra fence that drops into the saws miter slot.

nice job! noticed prior to the upgrade your table saw had a router insert in the right wing. did the vega setup allow you to still use that?

Thom, I have this fence in my Ridgid R4512. I noticed when you locked the fence down (at the end of the video) that it seemed to "jump" slightly to one side. Does that happen all the time, or was it just my eye?

Thom, I bought this same Vega fence and installed it on my Delta 34-444 Contractors saw years ago. Installation was a piece of cake and it locked in parallel and solid every time, just as yours does. My problem was in the face of the fence itself. The fence seems to have a twist in it along its length, so the face isn't 90 degrees to the table. I returned my original fence and was given a replacement. Same problem with both fences. I bought it at a woodworking show and a second return would have been a hassle at best. That fence has been sitting in a box in the basement for the last 20 years. I ended up with an Incra fence and have been thrilled with that system ever since. My question is, do you see any evidence of twist in the length of your fence? Is the face of your Vega 90 degrees to your saw table along the entire length of the fence? Anyone want to buy a Vega fence, 20 years old in brand new condition never used? By the way, nicely done video.
@thomrider
@thomrider 7 жыл бұрын
Mark B I have had no issues with the fence. It's 90 degrees to the table with no twist in the fence. But mine was manufactured just a few years ago. Maybe by the time I got mine they have master the process.

I might interested if it's cheap enough. It sounds like it might take quite a bit of work/money to get it square, if that is even possible. How much do you want for it?
@markb1254
@markb1254 7 жыл бұрын
John Galt that was a tongue in cheek comment. It would be easier to get rid of around here. I'm pretty sure a lot of people wouldn't even notice the face of the fence not being perfectly vertical over it's entire length. It's more of a problem if you run a piece on edge than flat on it's face. I just figured for an aftermarket fence that isn't exactly cheap that it wouldn't have that problem.

It’s a great fence. Has been accurate the whole time I’ve used it. You just have to recalibrate for each blade change but that’s super easy.

I have a ridgid r4512 hybrid table saw and the stock fence is making me mad to say the least. I spent some time and money building a beautiful folding outfeed table custom to the existing fence. my question to you is can I install a vega fence only using its front bar? I'm never gonna use a fence buddy. and I'd rather not disturb the rear stock rail as long as it won't effect the accuracy of the vega fence. please advise or point me in the right direction. thanks and great video. also FYI the r4512 is basically identical to the newest craftsman
@thomrider
@thomrider 8 жыл бұрын
Yes you could all you would have to do is put some thing under the rear of the fence to keep it from rubbing the table. The rear bar just helps support the extension wing you would make, And the rear of the fence with a plastic knob that rides on it. Hope this helps.
@artconnolly9519
@artconnolly9519 8 жыл бұрын
+Thom Rider thanks Thom so if I gather you correctly. the rear rail is only to support the rubber "foot" on the back of the fence when slidding back and forth. so my saws rear rail is 7/16" below the saws table top. so sounds like it's an exact match

What is the gap between the fence and saw top? Looked substantial during the side view.
@thomrider
@thomrider 6 жыл бұрын
The gap is about 1/16 actually. but if needed I can use a board screw to the side of the fence if I need to rip ultra thin material. the gap is adjustable but where I have it is where it is recommended.

This just saved my hide this afternoon. Thank you! One question - do you remember the size of the allen wrench needed to square up/align the fence to the table?
@thomrider
@thomrider 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for Watching, you will need a 5/16 allen wrench to adjust the four bolts and square your fence. i just align mine with the miter slot to square it up. Let me know if you need any other assistance.
