Hi guys!! I work for Delta and would like to thank you very much for your feedback! We are always trying to give our customers the best possible experience. I am so glad that you happy with your flights. I will pass this video along to in-flight customer service. You have some really good suggestions on how to improve our meal service. Oooohhhh, Brian! Polenta is the bomb. Ignore the package directions: combine 1 cup polenta with 3.5 cups water (and a bit of salt if you use it) in a casserole. Bake it uncovered at 350F for 50 minutes. Stir it, then bake it 10 more minutes. Remove it from the oven, cover it, and let it sit for 10 minutes or so. Serve. This makes three nice servings. Totally hands-off! You can store it in the fridge for several days. To reheat it, place a portion in a dish and add a couple tablespoons or of water. Microwave for two minutes, stir it up to smooth it out, then microwave for an additional minute. Good as fresh! Also, you can slice cold polenta and grill it. Try it with the griddler!

Thank you so much for this. I get emails from the New York time and they just gave out the recipe for mushroom bourguignon. Polenta what is the first suggested item to eat it with. It is a full one vegetarian dish maybe vegan? It does have 6 tablespoons of oil and red wine but that’s the only two questionable items I see in the recipe.

The best thing about flying international is that the cabin crew are older and thus more professional than a fair number of crew on the short flights one takes in the States. Also, I used to fly Delta to and from Japan to Atlanta and found the food pretty good in the main cabin, but man oh man, the food in business class was always top notch. Glad you guys had a positive experience on your flights.

I put like a cup of old fashioned oats, no fluid in a large coffee cup. If on a plane I ask for hot water to be poured in. If in terminal, I find a coffee place and ask for 12 oz of steamed almond milk. I looked at my upcoming lower 48 flight, no options ☹️. Guess I’ll carry oats, fruit and mcdougall soup cup.

@Christine Anderson OMG, this is a brilliant idea! I commented that I didn't know why the airline wouldn't serve oats but it was explained that they don't serve hot meals when nearing arrival. Bringing your own oats and asking for hot water is a perfect solution to that!

I also carry oats on international flights and get either steamed soy in the airport-often they just give it to me for free!-or hot water on the plane. I also bring roasted chickpeas to add to plain vegan meals from my flight. Indian vegetarian is usually vegan and has much more flavor, but you risk getting a meal with dairy so err on the side of full vegan but bland and bring your own meal add-ins: protein toppings like tofu and chickpeas, extra chopped fresh veggies like peppers and such, or maybe some roasted potatoes.

I work in the airline industry. There are standardized special meal options and their VGML (vegan meal) is indeed described as non dairy vegetarian (strict vegetarian) for some reason with delta. VLML would have been vegetarian lacto ovo meal. Every airline may develop their own recipes etc but the meal codes are standard so from now if all else fails just ask customer service for VGML at least 24 hrs in advance for any long haul flight.

Hearing your story brings back so many funny memories from when I traveled to England about 10 years ago. I was traveling alone on a huge plane with hundreds of people, and our flight had been delayed, so needless to say, people weren't in the best of moods. I think I had one of the few (if not only) special dietary vegan meals on the flight, and it smelled delicious. I was served an hour in advance of everyone else and thought I was gonna get jumped lol. Either that, or they thought I was a celebrity sitting in coach. I kinda wanted to crawl under my seat because everyone was so hungry and staring at me like rabid animals. I felt so bad I waited an hour to eat until other people were getting served. My food was still super delicious even though it was cold. 😁 Thank you guys for your wonderful videos!!

Wow. That Mediterranean lentil dish & the eggplant masala looked amazing! I actually love tomatoes and cucumbers but that salad was seriously chintzy, no lettuce or greens at all and so tiny. I did not think we could bring fruit or any food at all on the plane. Good to know! So excited for you guys, what a great trip! I have always dreamed of going to Europe. One day. Glad you two figured out how it all works. We appreciate you!

So far, because I've only flown in country, I have brought all my own food. Things like rice cakes, almond butter and dates, work pretty well. Apples are great because they are contained, and little remains. Bananas would be great but too much peel for me. Plus they get bruised easily. If you're on a 6 or 7 hr flight, you need some sustenance.

One of my favorite meals is polenta, sauteed mushrooms (however you choose, water or oil, or nothing) add fresh spinach at the end of cooking mushrooms so it can wilt. I add vegan parmesan cheese to the polenta once it is cooked. Pine nuts for crunch Salt & pepper or whatever spice you have a hankering for.I do usually add some coconut milk with water to cook the polenta. I try all different options. At times I cook oatmeal and do the same thing, I make it savory. You will find several recipes for this polenta, mushrooms & spinach delight in line.

Fyi, you can make polenta in a rice cooker, which is way easier than cooking it on the stovetop. The stovetop method generally requires stirring frequently. I just put 3 parts water to 1 part polenta in the rice cooker, give it one good stir before cooking, then another good stir at the end. Easy peasy!

I take KLM/Delta from Amsterdam to the States. Being vegan, I have tried time and time again to enjoy the vegetarian meals that the airline(s) offers (even in business class), but just simply can't bear it any longer so I've resorted to opting for the pasta dishes for regular passengers instead. Yes, I eat the bread and the brownie or whatever comes with it, but I thank any animal product that might accompany the meal (learned that trick from the Dalai Lama). Many a time I wished that I had a vegan/vegetarian restaurant that catered to airlines, but then I'd add faux meat/cheeses to the menu. One day they'll catch on or some great vegan chef will make a mint being the first to cater to them. Glad you're back. 💜

I left for Lebanon (on Dec 25 too) with Turkish airlines (Air Canada to Boston from Toronto, than Turkish Airlines from Boston to Istanbul, than to Beirut) and they had a vegan option. The food was really good. A nice portion size of salad, fruit bowl, hummus, bread and also a bowl of rice, steamed spinach and ratatouille type casserole. On the way back , similar food but instead of the fruit I got a small glazed donut 🤷🏼‍♀️. I got the food quickly too and they didn’t forget.

We usually end up flying British Airways, they usually have a decent vegan meals, but sometimes they kind of get confused and you end up with some dairy milk for your coffee or dairy butter for your bread roll (it’s easy enough not to use those though). For our long haul flights, I usually bring food for the meal we end up eating at the airport (checking in 3 hours before a flight usually means we’re there for a meal lol) and some snacks for the plane, but I try to make sure to bring manageable amounts of fresh fruit & veg, since you can’t take them into the UK with you and you need to eat it before you land or throw it away before going through customs.

I just went through this whole thing with Delta flying from Atlanta to Tokyo. The food was very good, but very hit and miss as far as organization. The crew members seemed to be confused at snack time, but they always went and "found" something for me (I think it was special stuff from 1st class lol). Also, on my flight back home, our seats got moved around last minute so then the crew members "couldn't find my special meal" but they eventually did after I mentioned what happened at check in.

Yes! It's the same, even if you go to Canada. You have to declare all produce. When we had our orientation for Nexus, the border patrol went on and on about not bringing fruit--specifically citrus--across the border. I don't remember much of what they said, but I'm petrified of accidentally bringing fruit!

@@lessamanda1055 lol, I was driving back from Montreal once, and said I had nothing to declare (even though he could see that I'd used the last of my Canadian money to buy milk and toilet paper). Two miles down the road I remembered that I'd made myself a sandwich with some Spanish ham! I got that down rather quickly, just in case! :P

Thanks for this helpful video! ❤ Also with Delta, make sure that it says "vegetarian (non-dairy)" under "services" in your flight details, I requested a meal for a flight via messaging, and it wasn't listed there, I had to request meals for a different itinerary (also messaged them again because I didn't realize Vegetarian non dairy meant vegan 😬) and suddenly saw it pop up 🤨, thankfully the agent corrected the one that wasn't there too.

Aside from the fact that 'comfit' means cooked under oil (not deep fried, because the oil temp is kept lower) and chefs believe the key to polenta is butter, butter and more butter and cheese, and more cheese, so chances that polenta was loaded with fat and that is why it tasted so good. I think you can still make a good meal out of these ingredients.

Interesting. Hubs and I took Delta to Germany last june and I ordered the veg no dairy option. The domestic flight food was simple but superb-a huge plate of perfectly cooked veggies and I can’t remember what else. The long flight food main dinner was literally inedible. It was like they had just pulled a few things off one of the regular meals to make it compliant. Overcooked, under flavored, generally gross and I’m will to eat almost anything!

Great topic! I chose the same (veg, non-dairy) on the way to France and it was pretty good.

I've had similar experiences flying to and from Europe on Delta. . The "vegetarian nondairy" meals have always been quite good.
