Believe it or not but this wasn’t an April Fool’s Joke. It says a lot that I’m more likely to be asked to debate whether or not plants feel pain than the fact that animals do actually feel pain. Why do we care about tomatoes making noises through releasing gas but not animals screaming because they’re actually suffering?

This is the level of "debate" we can have because they simply don't care, they brought you there to say "well, see this vegan activist and the hypocrisy" not because they even cared in the first place If tomatoes "scream".

Same here, biologist (botanist) and educator, and it has made my blood boil as well. But I am also very annoyed with the authors of the study. I heard a lead author interviewed on NPR and they did not once clarify that the sounds may hold no communicative purpose. They actually suggested several hypotheses on communicative purpose. I think the authors are sorta just enjoying the mass media attention, and not clarifying the inaccuracies. Unethical IMHO.

Came to the comments for this- I found him quite impressive, honestly. I thought he was honest, reasonable, and speaking in good faith, aspects which are often missing from such interactions. Edit: especially the bit about early years! He could have posed that as an argument, but I think rather he posed it as a discussion point; he raised a concern he had and was open to new information and being wrong, admitting that perhaps he doesn't know enough about the topic to know the answer.

I watched a fascinating video the other day that really made me re-think how veganism is portrayed by most. We all think "Oh, instead of killing the cow I will just eat tomatoes" but the farmer in the video explained that in order to grow mass fields of one crop, you MUST KILL every insect/small animal that will attack your crop. Gophers, ground kitties, birds, mice/rats, foxes, ANY ANIMAL that poses a threat to that crop must be exterminated... Which defeats the idea of 'not killing for food'.

Well said my friend, I second that completely. Contrary to all other media outlets, GBN is always the most respectful platform for actual dialogue and discussion - they allow anyone on and allow anyone to speak, and they will gladly give you your platform and question it with good faith. It's a shame they're just painted as a right-wing propaganda arm because what they really are is an anti-establishment channel just wanting to give dissenting views a chance in the spotlight. It doesn't matter if they're more popular with right wing activists, because at the end of the day, they still gladly welcome people like George Galloway or in this case, Ed, to have their time to shine and offer their take. On top of all this, they are even willing to admit when they're wrong in a debate, and by far host the most open-minded speakers I've seen on a news channel. For these merits, I commend them.

Same I spent years as a vegetarian "considering" veganism when all I really needed to do was just take the plunge and I would have figured things out then just as I had figured things out when I actually decided. And I did it because of the most trivial reason too, I was visiting my vegan girlfriend and I just didn't want to disappoint her, so I figured why not for this weekend I'll be vegan not eat any milk cheese or egg (since I was already vegetarian), and then found out well hey that was easy, maybe I should just continue it. Maybe I'll eat some cheese if I feel like it every now and then but lets take this for a test drive! And what do you know I never got the cravings because I balanced my diet really well with all the flavors I needed! So I retroactively called that moment when I went vegan even though in the moment and time I definitely didn't know or mark it as *the turning point* hahaha. So You just need a trivial reason to do it, and then figure out how to maintain it well and go from there! What do you have to lose? :D

Of course the starting point of having to argue the difference between the popping of air pockets in the tomato and the screams of pigs isn't great, but following it up with a bunch of great points for switching to a plant based diet could make a difference to the people who clicked on the clip expecting a vegan to be crushed by the interviewer

I just wish someone brought up the fact that a vegan diet is in fact more expensive then a normal diet, most people who are vegan and can’t afford it almost certainly always make themselves sick, there’s also people out there that don’t educate themselves on a sustainable vegan diet and also make themselves sick, as someone who was for a short bit vegan in high school my parents tried to support my diet but in the end I stopped because it was a lot of money and we just couldn’t afford it, I also lost a lot of weight and struggle to this day to regain it because my body doesn’t like some food anymore, I think there are risks with any diet even the normal one that’s why we have an obesity epidemic and I think we just need more education on food in general and food needs to be cheaper.

The point is we do not only use animals for eating their corpses, but also for eating their secretions, for clothing (their furs, leather, wool...), for entertainment... Reducing veganism to a diet may be apparently useful, but it's not. The problem is not that they suffer, because we then can search of ways of enslaving and exploiting that minimizes suffering. The problem is the idea that they exist to serve us, the problem is that they are legally considered our properties. In my opinion. this is the core assumption that we need to challenge when presenting veganism to other people. Which doesn't mean we have to exclude any other topic. My point is that «THIS» is the topic that we should try to always include. Thank you for addressing the notion that plants sentience would endorse animal slavery and exploitation.

Regarding screaming plants, they may signal distress but that would not be same as pain of cutting their body as that serves no purpose for plants as they are immobile. Pain due to injury to body parts serves purpose for animals as it signals danger and we are able to quickly move away or fix bad body positioning to save ourselves, move or rather jump away on touching fire or a sharp instrument etc. but plants are not mobile hence physical pain due to injury serves no purpose for them. Why would it? They cannot move to avoid it or save themselves from it. Most plant are able to regrow lost limbs and their fruits and vegetables are meant for animals to eat and spread their seed (not always, but mostly). So comparing plants’ high frequency calls to due to lack of water etc, to the trauma of physical injury and its effect on animals who have survived abuse is scientifically not a very robust argument.

@@lauralee6628Compost. Using manure from cows whose lives have been subjected to total human control and interest from birth till death isn't something that people who don't participate in unnecessary animal use are into. I *was* though, just at an animal sanctuary where the manure is given to local farmers, and that's cool because it's just a by-product of cows living peacefully. It's all about avoiding unnecessary harm. Using cows as if they were food is not carbon neutral nor is it ethically neutral, and besides, no one needs their breast milk except their calves, who don't get it cuz we're guzzling it down. We have our own human milk, just like every other mammal has their own which is perfectly made for them until they wean. If we're fortunate enough to be participating in this dialogue, I doubt we're subsisting off of some scarcely-resourced village where a cow is inherent for survival.
