The dehydrated soy chunks need to be soaked in boiling water for a half hour. I add my seasonings in with the boiling water. Whatever liquid doesn’t get absorbed I pour in the pan and cook with the soy and let it cook off - so good! It makes them so flavorful and a little saucy. I tried cooking them like soy curls the first time too and the texture was not great.

I second this, I soak them for only 20 minutes (in boiling water and vegan chicken bouillon) when im in a hurry, then fry them in a pan. Turns out to be a great texture every time! Hope this helps

I miss H Mart so much now that I live in the midwest a couple hours away from one. This was so much fun living vicariously through you. I have developed a strong love of Asian food since going vegan, because I found it easiest to make plant based and add copious amounts of veggies at the same time. I hope you guys make more H Mart food related videos again. Also, most importantly, thank you for using your platform to highlight important issues. I believe to be vegan also means to care about all living beings and acknowledge any suffering/violence/oppression that exists due to human hands.

I hydrate the soy chops with just water, then pan fry them with a little oil. I add sauce after as a topping so they keep the crispy outside and are softer inside.

A new Sweet Simple Vegan video feels like Christmas morning! Love you guys! Thank you for mentioning the Asian racism issue. My grandma was in the Japanese internment camps and never talks about it. I know she was deeply affected as is our whole family but like you said many Asians value keeping things to themselves. I hope more people will share their stories so we can make the world a little kinder. Keep up the good work!

On the soy chops, you need to soak them in hot water - but then I drain & rinse them & then squeeze out the excess water - like squeeze out as much as you can. THEN I season them . I like to use whatever flavors I like i.e. garlic, any of the various vegan flavor packets or sauces. But what my daughter likes is when I use a little liquid smoke & make a “steak” or carne asada - I can barely get them out of the pan before they’re devoured. And yes, I cut them into strips before pan frying them. If you don’t rinse & squeeze out the initial water - they have a weird after taste & they end up kind of mushy/soggy WITH that after taste. So SOAK, rinse, squeeze squeeze squeeze, season & stir fry til dry. Life changing!

That mushroom seasoning is my fave! I put it in and on everything! Also I’m so glad you spoke out about the violence going on against Asian Americans. As a fellow Asian American it means a lot to hear others speaking about it!

For dried soy chunks, strips, chops, etc., I always soak for like 30 minutes in hot water or stock then squeeze the liquid out before sautéing! I love the strips in vegan carne asada, Mongolian beef, and cheesesteaks!

I find those same dumplings at my local Kroger! They're my family's favorite!! We mix the included sauce with some of our own additions (soy, rice wine vinegar, agave, Sriracha, sesame oil...) and also lightly pan fry and then steam them. The little bit of pan fried crispiness on the bottom really makes a difference!!! Totally worth the tiny bit of extra effort and you can just steam them in the same pan if you have a matching lid. Still love watching your guys' videos 3 years later 🥰 by far my favorite vegan KZbin couple!!!! 💚💚

If you do visit H Mart again, I would recommend the tteokbokki chips(they're sweet but spicy. They're similar to Doritos Roulette but every chip has a spicy surprise), black soymilk(the brand vitasoy also has chocolate, melon, coconut, and malt), vegetarian oyster sauce(made from mushrooms, no animal byproducts), jjajamen(it seems vegan, I think the "meat" is tvp. At latest you guys can try to make some vegan jjapguri), and mochi ice cream

The Verisoy... I get the vegan beef slices and make stew with them. I use the same no beef bullion to make a stock to soak them in and then use that same liquid to make the stew. I find they get a better soft meaty texture when they are cooked low and slow . Soaking them over night was a good idea but the liquid with heat does the trick I found.. Iv been vegan for a few years but hubby just started this past October so I am trying to keep things interesting for him and he definitely gives my stew 2 thumbs up! :)

H Mart Rules! We have been shopping there for a few years now. Came across one while in Little Korea and decided to have a look to see if they had any new vegan flavors for us. Now we go all the time. There are so many vegan options. Do read all the labels. Because some foods may contain fish. Definitely use the app in the video, some packages have english on them but not all. If you are new to making Asian food as we were, we decided to look up vegan Asian recipes and then go to buy the ingredients from H Mart. The people who own and or work at at the Asian markets are very helpful when looking for an item you can't find. Some may even suggest a recipe or a better item. Korean foods can be very spicy, but I promise you that you will get used to the heat of the spice when you eat it. Just read to see what level the spices are. The package will have it on there. Or ask a clerk, they will let you know. We have been to a few H Marts in different places and they are helpful in all. If you Love spicy food! They have a Black Bean Noodle at H Mart it is in a black raman package, with a cartoon chicken on it. Totally vegan. There are many flavors but not all, are vegan. Just read the package. It will fill your mouth with heat! Lol But it is so delicious! I guarentee you will buy it again. Chinese supermarkets are also amazing wide selection and variety of noodles, tofu, and vegetables also black soybean milk or different flavor soybean milks juices. J Mart is also an awesome place, it is a Japanese Supermarket. Shopping at Asian supermarkets you are sure to find vegan ingredients and vegan option ready made foods as well. This video was a great idea. What ever supermarkets you choose, they are all happy to help you to find what you need. Enjoy! Have fun trying all the flavors you will find! 💖
