In today's video I sit down with an ex-vegetarian who now eats fish, to discuss the ethical principle of veganism and how he justifies not being vegan. This chat was very productive and I think I left him with a lot to think about. Filmed at Cambridge University, England.

I’m 71, my husband is 83 and my mother who lives with us is 89 years old and we’ve all been vegan for almost 8 years after we’ve watched the documentary Earthlings!!! To us, there was no doubt, we were so disgusted about the way all industries all over the world, treat the animals for people consumption, we decided that the only way not to contribute to the abuses and massacres, was to turn vegan immediately. It was not easy but we did it and it’s the best thing we’ve done!! Thank you Joey for all you do for the voiceless!

Joey, I love you, you are my hero. I have a suggestion/recommedation - the #1 pushback I get from soo many people, liberals in particular, where I live and elsewhere, is that "vegan is for privileged white people". Then they use that argument to dismiss any discussion of veganism by white people, especially white men. Of course that is a B.S. argument, especially coming from white people. Please interview more people of color, women especially. And please talk about and show more of them who are vegan! And include the fact that Black Americans are the fastest growing demographic who are vegan. Thank you for all you do! 💚

@User-93561 Your argument against veganism is admirably concise, but for some reason, I remain unconvinced. Can you refute any of these compelling reasons to boycott animal products? 1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get the most common chronic, deadly diseases) 2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases 3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen. 4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year! 5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution 6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation 7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions. 8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity 9-Needless killing of innocent, sentient beings cannot be ethically justified. 10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation. 11- Longer lifespan. 12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.) 13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance 14- Vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of dementia later in life 15- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third! 16-A fully plant based diet improves the immune system according to a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health 17-A fully plant based food system would greatly reduce food borne illnesses like salmonella 18-A fully plant based food system would be able to feed millions more people. Our population is growing! 19-A fully plant based food system would save 13,000 lives a year from the air pollution caused by animal agriculture, according to a study 20- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1 trillion in health care and related costs (Oxford Study) Links for some of these are at my channel under "About." If you doubt any of them, I would be glad to cite evidence from credible sources to back them up. KZbin only allows a certain number of links at my channel. After I made my list, I found this video with his own list which overlaps mine. He cites evidence from credible sources in the description. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5SZfp2jqJalnq8

I've come to the conclusion it's about discipline... unfortunately many humans lack it
@Limemill
@Limemill Жыл бұрын
It's weird that empathy should have anything to do with discipline. You wouldn't eat people when you slip up, right? It means there's still some disconnect. Interestingly, empathy is something that can be trained, as per studies, through tools like the metta (loving kindness) meditation. I wonder if that could be applied to help one feel more naturally for animals without having to rely on willpower
@Sebastian-rf1hz
@Sebastian-rf1hz Жыл бұрын
The one thing stronger than discipline is making the connection that what you eat is the body of a tortured and needlessly killed animal. After that realization you only need the same amount of discipline you need to not eat your dog.

Didn't you want to keep fallacies out? Strawman. You can be exvegan and be anti animal abuse at the same time. Yes, people and animals are complicated. It's just not a great show of logically consistent behavior, which most people experience at one point or another in their lives (even YOU, comment reader). Not everyone deals with cognitive dissonance the same way. I'm a vegetarian and 'immoral' exvegan (was vegan for nearly 2 years) and I still do admire the vegan lifestyle as it's the most consistent, optimal and usually most compassionate and effective way to reduce animal suffering. What I dont admire is that a lot of times there still is an aggressive and condencending attitude towards the non vegan out-group and this does not help the animals by any means as you get an anti vegan vibe with meat eaters. Being vegetarian is suboptimal but still beats eating meat and fish. If all the consciousness-eaters would start to become at least vegetarian, there would ALSO be a world with less suffering and a lot less animal abuse. Not an ideal one (i.e. vegan world), but I noticed people become way more curious towards the suffering of animals and less aggrivated when I talk to them about it now then when I was a vegan. Changing attitudes requires time and the right strategies. We need as many strategies as possible to fix the horrendous problem. That is: if one, more passive, vegetarian can change 10 people to become vegetarianism without significant collateral damage that is considered a win in my view. Again, not optimal, but it is a small victory. If one vegan causes 5 people to become vegan but 20 to become anti vegan and thefore reinforcing their cruel attitude towards animals and at the same time completely tear down the possibility towards even the lesser, but still cruelty reducing, vegetarianism. The 5 vegans are a great thing but the collateral damage not so much. Anyways, keep being compassionate. Otherwise it's the same problem as mentioned above (logical consistency).
@Vegan_Ape_2018
@Vegan_Ape_2018 Жыл бұрын
@@Muzafer13 That's the response I'd expect from a vegetarian. You can't be anti animal abuse and eat animals. That is not a straw man. Murder is inherently abusive. Unless you're a master at mental gymnastics. Lol It may be a "win" by your view, but I bet the animals in cages, living in their own shiite, having their children taken away, and being killed beg to differ.

Each time he chooses those products it reinforces this ritual. Many will say people lack discipline, morality, and will power, and yes that's 100% correct. It wasn't will power that got me to overcome my nicotine addiction, it was a set of principles i could refer back to just incase i needed to redirect my mindset so i wouldn't relapse, most people fail quoting nicotine unfortunately, im proud I was able to. Morality is objective. It is a spectrum of acceptable actions based on well being and fairness. Usually there are descriptions of oughts and is statements so goals get created. Though life's goal is personal and subjective simply because experiences though can be shared aren't 100% synchronized with others thoughts and experiences. We can objectively create morality via discussion and thought rather than just be unquestioning and it will change over time to be more fair, less hypocritical, and develop tenants of oughts and ought nots almost like discovering mathematic principals and scientific phenomena.

I dont eat animals at all, but I think animal products are a grey area. I have chickens and bees at my home and give them plenty of space and a natural habitat, as far as I can tell they're living happy lives. I eat the chicken's eggs, bee honey and use their wax but never take more than they can afford to lose. If the bees wanted to leave they could, but they choose to stay. I've seen people rear dairy cows in an ethical way too, they're bred to produce surplus milk so you can fill a small bucket each morning and leave enough for the calves. Again, these animals can live happy natural lives and provide useful ecological functions.

Alot of misinformation and misunderstanding about farming in this video. Makes me sad! I would be curious as too what they suggest we should do with all the animals that are being "held in captivity and slavery" as well as to how we could adapt agriculturally to that sort of massive change. Also curious, where do we draw the line with these animal rights? Can I still swat a fly or am I violating its rights?

Morals are something we humans democratically decided on to benefit ourselves. Killing animals is not immoral because we have not decided it to be immoral, for it would be a major inconvenience that does not benefit our species. The death penalty for hardened criminals in many parts of the world is not immoral because the society in those places have a democratic consensus that it is not immoral. The problem with these vegans is that they have a minority belief that killing animals is 'murder'. But it is not murder because we have not had a referendum to decide it to be murder. That of course would come with huge implications in pest control etc. Are we going dob in our neighbours we saw stepping on an ant, and have homicide come to investigate? And do we then force our beliefs on other continents such Africa that take their morals from religion. If God created animals for humans to eat then how can it be a sin? The problem with these vegans is that they can not possibly get such a referendum through parliament, so instead they go virtue signalling on the street, shaming random people walking by who are not equip to debate like a barrister would come equip to a court case. They are unaccepting of other peoples beliefs (such as religious people) which comes with huge implications itself because if people are not entitled to their beliefs, then so neither are the vegans entitled. Of course it opens up so many more questions to be raised, such as then how do we morally justify killing plants, just because they dont feel pain they are a life that is trying to multiply their seeds, it would be discrimination, they never harmed anyone, whereas carnivorous animals have committed murder so are more deserving of being killed themselves.

@@billwalton4571 But we have decided killing animals as immoral. It is illegal many places to abuse and kill cats and dogs. What is the difference between a cat, dog, horse or dolphin and the cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys? Why do we love some animals and eat others? Culture and religion do not dictate morality. Some cultures still endorse stoning women to death. Stepping on an ant is hardly the same as purposefully raising 80 billion land animals for the sole purpose of exploiting and killing the animal unnecessarily for food. We have literally hundreds of other options that don't cause nearly the amount of damage to the animals, or health and the environment. If you're worried about plants, that aren't sentient by the way, the you should be interested to know that vegans harm far less plants than the animals harm to eat enough to gain weight for you to pay for their slaughter. You made an argument for veganism, not against.

The animals currently exploited have been bred into existence to meet demand. As demand decreases, so will supply. The only reason livestock farmers do what they do is for the financial incentive. They are, after all, a business.

I can't remember the last time I bought meat, so I looked up nutritionists in my area to get information on how to make sure a new born gets all the nutrients they need. First two adverts played during this video. McDonald’s ad for bacon and egg muffin. Secondly Hungry Jacks burgers. Because this video is monetised, it’s benefiting financially from the industry it supposedly stands against. So on one hand it makes a strong moral argument then it breaks it. Hypocritical even if it’s not intentional.

Murder is when a human kills another human, not an animal and yes we are thr higher being so we do decide who lives and who dies , as lions decide in the wild who they kill, has the human race decides who animals to protect and eat, in something to live something as to die in all walks of life.

Great discussion. I hope he will go fully Vegan. Horrific animal abuse is rife in the egg and milk industry. The fish example puzzles me. We see them fighting for their life and obviously distressed when people fish, yet they proudly smile and teach it to their kids as though it is a wonderful bonding and loving thing to do with them. It's not. They suffer greatly.

My dock is also wheelchair accessible. I have a lot of people with special needs and their caretakers come out what are those people suppose to do? I have people come from all walks of life come out there fishing.
