No wonder she had health problems after twenty years of veganism, she clearly did not take the time to do any research into the nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Hell, she is even ignorant of much of basic biology and evolution, not even getting started on the ethics travesties in her worldview. I don't necessarily blame Crowder because his audience desperately needs some talking points as vegans and vegetarians constitute a disproportionately large share of their political opposition. Public speakers and intellectuals either more centrist or on the opposite side of the political spectrum like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins have much more honest and open discussions on the topic.

If we go back 2 years ago I was the biggest meat eater and used to get so defensive when I knew I'd be interacting with vegetarians (at the time a didnt know any vegans). I had chest pains which after some tests at the docs turned out to be related to having high cholesterol (at the age of 20!). since coming across this channel, Vegan Gainz, Jon Venus etc. I changed to a plant based whole foods diet along with researching religiously and since doing so...no chest pains and a whole other load of benefits 💪

From my first grade biology class? The fruit is the prize the animal gets for eating the seeds and spreading them around with it's poop.
@cdahl
@cdahl 7 жыл бұрын
The seed grows back into a tree not the animal edible parts. Your link even asserts that "Edible fruits, in particular, have propagated with the movements of humans and animals in a symbiotic relationship as a means for seed dispersal and nutrition;" You think fruits are nice and bright to attract our eyes, and smell wonderful to attract our sense of smell, get soft when ripe to appease our sense of touch, are usually easily peeled with our hands, fingers, nails, mouthes, yet we and other animals have absolutely no part in spreading their seeds or benefiting from their consumption? They're literally calling for us to eat them. You must think fruit trees get mad when we eat their fallen ripe fruits and shit out their seeds in other areas and help them spread out more. Also, we and other frugivores highly benefit from from ingesting vitamin C while carnivores synthesize their own. It's probably why we're so great at peeling and eating raw fruits compared to say a lion.

The longest lived and healthiest people on the planet are the vegan Seventh Day Adventists in Loma Linda California. That alone refutes the assertion that it is necessary to eat slaughtered animal carcasses for health. "Agriculture is the most destructive activity." While that is arguable, it obviously cannot be helped. We could not all return to picking nuts and berries, nor would we want to do so. If agriculture is the most destructive activity then animal agriculture is the mostest of the most destructive activity. Of course, all things are relative.

I am glad animal agriculture was mentioned in this video. If you look at the EPA web site it breaks down all of the greenhouse gases and what amounts of each are released by the industry. Animal agriculture is the worst emission source of the gasses that effect climate change in the world. While coal emits tons of carbon a day, animal agriculture emits methane carbon, and a other greenhouse gasses everyday. Not only is it changing the climate, but it is also killing our marine life, nitrogen oxide and other chemicals are being dumped into our water ways due to waste, and other reasons that are killing the fish, and plant life not only in rivers and streams, but also in our oceans. But in the USA we are not allowed to talk negatively about it without fear of legal recourse.

There's also a massive misunderstanding of evolution presented by these two. They seem to assert that wolves actively chose to evolve into domestic dogs. This completely false. Organisms do not try to evolve, all of the non adapted ones die, or don't breed. Humans artificially prevented the more aggressive animals from reproducing, this went directly against the desires of the most of the wolves in a group. They didn't actively coordinate with us, and more generally speaking, wolves never wanted to become dogs.
@wschippr1
@wschippr1 7 жыл бұрын
Joshua 9999 Actually, there is some evidence that dogs evolved symbiotically with humans. The problem is we don't have a very good record of the process. Cats for example, almost certainly domesticated themselves. Humans settlements attract rodents and they attracted cats. Humans realized cats reduced rodents and promoted cats being around and so on and so forth.

Beautiful video veganatheist... I was raised a Hindu and a vegetarian. So killing animals for food was always wrong to me due to religion. Even when I became an atheist, I couldn't see any moral sense I'm eating meat. It seemed barbaric to me. I recently decided to slowly leave all the dairy from my food. I still can't figure out how to stop eating ice cream. That's the only form I eat now. But, even when I thought becoming vegan was unnecessary, I never understood the hate they get. What can be more non violent or what we call ahimsa in India (gandhi-like) and moral than trying ones best to not hurt?

@SweRaider1993
@SweRaider1993 7 жыл бұрын
Not a good thing, as he has a history of exaggerating claims as other researchers in the skeptic movement have pointed out... (Although Dr. Hall has her own agenda, she points out many blatant flaws in some of his popular videos) We need to stay away from biased personalities and go directly to the sources: Meta-analyses and reviews. It takes more effort, but you get a less warped view on the subject. The health benefits of a plant-based diet are moderate when it comes to the major diseases. [1] But it's not some miracle cure to every disease as Dr. Greger often tries to convey (via his support of dubious unreplicated research like that of heart-disease reversal by Ornish or Esselstyn). [1] *All-cause mortality* Systematic review and meta-analysis: "This comprehensive meta-analysis reports a significant protective effect of a vegetarian diet versus the incidence and/or mortality from ischemic heart disease (-25%) and incidence from total cancer (-8%). Vegan diet conferred a significant reduced risk (-15%) of incidence from total cancer." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/26853923/ Meta-analysis: "Red meat consumption is associated with an increased risk of total, CVD and cancer mortality. Substitution of other healthy protein sources for red meat is associated with a lower mortality risk." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3712342/ Meta-analysis: "These results indicate that high consumption of red meat, especially processed meat, may increase all-cause mortality." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24148709 *Cancer* Meta-analysis: "Findings from this meta-analysis suggest that a higher consumption of red meat was associated with a greater risk of esophageal cancer." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23467465 Systematic review: "Red meat, dietary fat and milk intake should be minimised as they appear to increase the risk of prostate cancer. Fruit and vegetables and polyphenols may be preventive in prostate cancer, but further studies are needed ..." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24976856 Systematic review: "High consumption of red meat and processed meat possibly increases risk of colorectal cancer or colon cancer among the Japanese population." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24842864 Review: "High consumption of meat such as chicken, pork, and poultry showed a positive association with the risk [of thyroid cancer], but dairy products showed no significant association." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25136535 Systematic review and meta-analysis: "Meat consumption is associated with esophageal cancer risk, which depends on meat type and histological type of esophageal cancer." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24395380 Systematic review and meta-analysis: "Processed meat intake was associated with increased risk of EAC. These results suggest that low levels of red and processed meat consumption and higher levels of fish intake might reduce EC risk." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23590703 Meta-analysis: "The results of this meta-analysis indicate that consumption of red and processed meat may be associated with increased risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23179661 *Heart disease* Review: "The overall findings suggest that neither unprocessed red nor processed meat consumption is beneficial for cardiometabolic health, and that clinical and public health guidance should especially prioritize reducing processed meat consumption." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23001745 Meta-analysis: "Findings from this meta-analysis indicate that consumption of red and/or processed meat increase risk of stroke, in particular, ischemic stroke." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23169473 Meta-analysis and review: "Consumption of processed meats, but not red meats, is associated with higher incidence of CHD and diabetes mellitus." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20479151 *Diabetes* Meta-analysis: "Our results suggest that red meat consumption, particularly processed red meat, is associated with an increased risk of T2D." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21831992/ *Obesity* Systematic review and meta-analysis: "The current analysis revealed that red and processed meat intake is directly associated with risk of obesity, and higher BMI and WC. However, the heterogeneity among studies is significant. These findings suggest a decrease in red and processed meat intake." - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24815945 *Of course always check funding or you can get biased studies as well* I only found two or three meta-analyses that went counter to the above results but these were done by one researcher with very obvious vested interests as all his research was funded by Cattlemen's Beef Board, National Cattlemen's Beef Association, National Pork Board, Beef Checkoff, Egg Nutrition Center, etc. This is quite the opposite compared to the above studies which were funded by national health institutes or other independent associations and agencies. As such I've excluded his studies. But you can find them here if you want to check for yourself: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=Alexander+DD

I used to love Dr. Greger. Posted his links as evidence all the time. Now I am supporting Greger less and less. At first he was great. But lately, the last year, he has creeped and creeped closer and closer to quackery, seemingly in love with his own voice. Dude did like a 1000-part series on the dangers of rice. Rice! Um, research Asians at dinner, dude. Rails against sweet potatoes, white potatoes, corn. Talking about "healthy fats" lately. You know, paleo buzzwords. Starting to look like any whole food source of calories is his enemy. Also, omnivores are increasingly using his quackery as justification for their own lives of sickness.

I apologize in advance for my english level since english is not my first language. It's been about a year that I started transitioning from a meat eating diet to a vegan one. And today I wondered if being vegan is about being against the use of animal products in the production of food, such as wearing leather shoes, using bone char or being produced in a factory that makes animal derived products, even if not including any animal derived products in the final product or being simply against putting animal derived products in food and using animal derived objects such as pieces of clothing, makeup, etc... What do you think ?

I will admit it here. I do eat chicken and sometimes bacon and eat cheese and eggs. But claiming veganism makes you ill? Come on. Everyone knows fruit and vegetables are necessary for good health. And provide most of the vital minerals and vitamins that our bodies need. And asserting what our hunter gatherer ancestors ate? No one can accurately or absolutely answer that question yet. And one day science will probably reveal that our ancestors did eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. After all our ancestors couldn't have successfully hunt an animal every single day. So our ancestors had to rely on fruit and vegetables just to survive.

I actually love the perspective you have. I am not an atheist and I am an omnivore. I do believe that humans are predatory in nature.. when observing non-human predatory species in their natural state they hunt and consume the flesh of other creatures.. is it too hard to accept that we as a still evolving species are still in general predatory? Who is to say how long it will take for our species to finally move beyond the templates of our past.. but here in this moment I know that it is ok that I eat meat and it is ok that you don't all that matters is love! "When we finally learn how to love and forget how to hate I will be there with open arms and an open heart. My only problem with vegans is anytime you try to bring up the fact that eating fat is healthy they make it about eating animals. Even though you can eat coconut oil, nuts and avocados as fat sources. I don't understand why people stating eating healthy fats is so offensive to vegans.I have been argueing with vegans about sugar causing diabetes not fat. That shouldn't even be debatable issue since Fat doesn't spike insulin or blood sugar, and someone eating a high fat diet will have lower blood sugar.

Well I suppose I shouldn't say anyone, more specifically I'd say anyone who wouldn't grant the level of sentience that vegans give to most animals. If you agree with concept that animals (besides humans) should be given more rights, you probably stay in the minority for awhile. Not to say that vegan ideas wouldn't become more widespread, but the morale brow beating will never really convince anyone, as it is usually treated as an attack on someones character.

MrGuruGanji actually, the moral "browbeating" has been effective for quite a number of people. There is no "one way" to advocate for the avoidance of animal exploitation. Besides, that's what veganism is about, consciously avoiding the participation of animal exploitation.
@MrGuruGanji
@MrGuruGanji 7 жыл бұрын
I think me and you have different definition of "quite a number of people". Less than 1% of the U.S population are classified as vegan. I believe Scientology has better track record than that and there a religious cult. So I guess if want create an ideology based on consciously objecting to meat products, and those who consume it, its a lose lose situation for you and those who object. "There is no "one way" to advocate for the avoidance of animal exploitation" I agree. My complaint is the moral brow beating as I see it as invective, and at times comes off as entitled by those advocating it. "Besides, that's what veganism is about, consciously avoiding the participation of animal exploitation" As I stated before that's why it won't last. It's fine if you decided on your accord that being a Vegan is the most moral and ethical choice. But your not changing minds of the majority with such a position.

The one on one fight comparison between apex predators is not fair. That's not how hunting works. Humans are social animals, which means we tend to hunt in packs. A group of 5-10 people can easily chase down any animal into exhaustion and then kill it bare-handed. The trick is to avoid fight until the animal is incapable of fighting back. Most apex predators hunt in packs animals far larger and stronger than they are, to which they would most likely not win on 1-on-1 fight. Chasing down pray before killing it is a technique that majority of hunters are familiar with even with modern hunting tools. The tools just reduce the risk of human injury and increase the efficiency - they are not absolutely necessary for success.

I do not believe it is necessary to eat animals to be healthy. I do believe that animals are capable of feeling joy and suffering from their treatment in life. I do not support cruel animal treatment and cruel animal agriculture. I do not believe in a correlation between adhering to those beliefs and the act of eating meat, that should conclude an inconsistency of logic. I don't think eating a dead animal is a bad thing. Hurting an animal is, but eating one is not. If I begin at an easier example, road kill. If I witness an animal (and this has happened) die from being struck by a car, I have no qualms with eating it afterwards. At a more difficult level to accept for vegans, I don't think it's wrong to kill an animal for food as long as it doesn't suffer in the process. Under my moral and philosophical code of ethical beliefs, I assert that negative emotional experiences has negative values, and should be avoided, however I also believe that life itself has no intrinsic value. Everything dies, and I don't think it is sad or wrong for that to happen. I don't believe my involvement in the process contradicts that belief. I do not support the act of trapping, for the reason that is harms animals and causes them to suffer. I do support certain hunting methods that prevent suffering during the killing process. Bow hunting, which often takes time to kill an animal, is not morally permissible for me. Due to the lack of extraordinary skill that it should take to reliably kill an animal with a single shot from a gun on every hunt, I am conflicted on that matter. Similar to bow hunting, I don't support the act when the chances of causing suffering are two great such as with large game. Small game tend far more often to die immediately when shot, so I can readily support that. Animal agriculture is not against my moral code in and of itself, but the big-business model that hurts the animals is NOT ok. Free range farms are okay by me as long as they use a sensibly quick and painless method of execution.

I know from relatives who lived with tribes in Brazil that their diet is way carb-heavy, mostly cassava. And most tribes do not hunt, they only fish. And the fish they eat comprises a very small part of their diets. Also from being a scientific illustrator for the department of Anthropologu at the American Museum of Natural History, I saw that they do not know what early human diets were. Bones are found in settlements because they last longer than vegetables and fruit do, and knowledge in general about their lives is extremely limited. Anybody who pretends to fully know what prehistoric people lives is faking knowledge.

And I vehemently disagree with your statement that no profound insights on how to live can be found here, particularly stated over a foto of what may be a South American tribe. That is completely close-minded. You ought to learn about the many fascinating insights on how to live that can be found among first nations peoples. For instance the tribes that never punish children, the way stories are told through competitive games, and Their creative use of materials in their surroundings. I agree that there is no need to found our moral values necesserily from what traditional cultures practice, but your statement is way out there

another good one: plants don't want to be eaten either. They just can't run away and don't have claws, so all they can do is poison people. Some things need to be cooked to break the starch bonds, such as any kind of potatoes, yams, sweet potatoes. Beans need to be soaked and cooked, as well as some nuts and other legumes. But to say that they don't want to be eaten? I think this woman has serious mental problems.

I am not sure if it was because I ate the wrong way, which is totally possible, or because I was brought up eating a lot of meat and diary and my body was just used to it, or if it was only a placebo that told me i feel better now... But maybe it is also easier to eat all nutrients if you eat meat and diary... Definitely do the research about what nutrients you need to look out for in plant foods. From my understanding, eating animals means you will be consuming the nutrients they had in their bodies prior to death, so when you eat only plant foods you will need to source these nutrients a little more individually. However, getting the nutrients through animals (including chickens and fish) means you also get all the unhealthy things that contribute to our main killers, like cholesterol and saturated fats. This means that veganism is healthier, as long as you're eating a variety of nutrients and enough calories. Once you have a good knowledge about what you should be including in a vegan diet, it definitely gets a lot easier. I think being motivated by ethics is really important - watch Gary Yourofsky's 'Best Speech Ever' if you haven't already. The website nutritionfacts has lots of info on good plant foods to eat, and why meat, dairy and eggs are not the healthiest sources of nutrients. If you try again and are really concerned, take a blood test - that way you can know for sure if you're lacking in anything and can easily search for ways to add another plant source into your diet. Good luck :)

nice comment... i have to say though i was always into sports and nutrition so i kind of know what nutrients I need already. My problem was that it kind of felt like it wouldn't work, it's weird. My guess is maybe that because of the caloric density of vegan food I might have to eat a lot more (gram-wise) than usually and I just didn't eat enough - so I felt weaker and weaker over time. I am 6''3' and never was under 200 pounds and did a lot of sports. I never counted calories or something though just tried to eat clean and when I did that with a vegan diet it probably just wasn't enough. On a vegan diet I maybe need a much stricter plan if I want to do lots of sports. Also just by the way. I was never an ethical vegan in those regards. I didn't turn vegan because I felt bad for the animals, I went vegan because I think it's the most logical choice and the best for the planet in the long run. Maybe it's even necessary to be vegan in a not so distant future for the planet to survive

TheSaulus I'd give it another shot, as you clearly understand some of the reasons to go vegan. Count your calories for a bit, to see if you're eating enough. Also a lot of people going vegan take meat eaters advice still such as white potatoes and bread are bad for you when they're not. They can easily up your calorie and nutrient intake!
@nettierose4915
@nettierose4915 7 жыл бұрын
I hope that you will give it another shot. You may be correct about your body being used to animal protein. Changing gradually and seeking advice from vegan dietitians may help. I don't mean to criticize but if you are going to eat meat, eating chicken will cause the most suffering of all. They are the most intensively raised. They are exempt from the Humane Slaughter Act. They are in constant horrible pain due to how they have been bred. Millions are scalded alive and millions suffer to deaths before slaughter due to the horrible conditions. Their suffering is unfathomable. But they get less compassion than mammals. Oysters and other invertebrates may be the best choice since they don't seem to have a central nervous system. I haven't eaten meat for 41 years and have been vegan for 26 years, am doing great.
@cdahl

It definitely sounds like you didn't get enough calories. It's a common mistake people transitioning make because they are used to eating more calorically dense foods. Give it another shot when you're ready and definitely use cronometer for a bit to make sure you're meeting your caloric needs - at least until you get the hang of it. Maybe watch some Frank Medrano videos for inspiration :D

It's great to hear that you're interested in being vegan! It's easier than you might think. Learn to cook some basic vegan meals and phase out the obvious stuff like cheese and replace with vegan alternatives if necessary. It's really easy to replace cow milk with a plant based alternative on your cereal, in your coffee, etc. Google is your friend when it comes to recipes but it might help to have a cookbook with vegan recipes. Most people, whatever their diet, eat the same meals week in week out so by the time you find around 7 meals you like, you're pretty much set. Don't forget to get your vitamin B12, be it in supplements or fortified foods. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to respond to those.
