I love this movie and this scene always has me laughing because I get that kind of reaction. "Why don't you eat meat? Isn't that unhealthy? The hell's wrong with you," haha!
@theodorelemineur76617 жыл бұрын
Kim H. Lol, but to answer your question, no, its not unhealthy. Its actually the opposite. People who eat meat have a much higher cardiovascular desease rate then people who don't eat meat. And cardiovascular deseases are the #1 causes of death btw. Also, there is not such thing as "meat is better because it has protein" because there is protein also in fruits and vegetables. And actually eating too much protein (like meat) can be deadly. So your body only needs a small amount (kinda like in fruits and vegetables). But if there is some complications, you can always get more protein on a plant based diet with beans and stuff like that. I hope that answered your question.

@g00glesuck546 жыл бұрын
@@theodorelemineur7661 completely false statement being aggressively pushed onto people everywhere. You COULD construct a healthy diet using plants and supplements. It does not mean that any plant diet is healthy. It's quite opposite, most of them are harmful and there are a lot of teenagers who go vegetarian and end up with various deficiencies/diseases caused by bad plant diet. It's correct that there's a higher cardiovascular disease rate in people who eat red meat compared to vegetarians. There's also a longer life expectancy in vegans. But you just said that plant diets are not that great, how does that work...? Well, you see kids, this is one very and very intriguing aspect of modern media called sensationalism. Something is taken out of context and is blown out of proportion. You have to read the study yourself. Who exactly are vegans in those studies? Well, at large, it's people who identify as vegans. Largely they submit a form at the start of the trial which has next question: Are you vegan? Yes/No checkmarks. Who are red meat eaters? Everyone else. Here we arrive at a huge issue. You see children, it turns out that if someone goes vegan chances are that someone does that for certain reasons. Quite often the reasons are to lose weight, to eat healthy, to improve one's health and life. These people don't stop at diet, in fact they go to gym, they avoid alcohol and coffee and nicotine, they use tooth floss. Meanwhile "red meat eater" population has normal distribution of "health freaks". So what we see in those studies is NOT a diet by diet comparison, instead we see a healthy lifestyle vs average "i don't give a fuck" lifestyle comparison. Now if you go and find a study on people who go to gym 3 times a week, do sports, brush their teeth, don't drink alcohol and altogether EQUAL with only difference being vegan vs meat you will see quite the opposite thing - meat eaters win. And BTW noone is interested in sponsoring research like that because there's no "farm grown soy" to sell you later on. ;)

This film is so horribly unfair (in many ways, not just this scene). When I traveled in Ukraine, and I often did when I was younger, people were so understanding when I explained I didn't eat animals (unlike Poland, where almost everyone is rude), and there was plenty of delicious potato vareniki, apple pirozhky and other lovely things I was offered when visiting people.

I don't know when and where in Poland you've been, but I can assure You, that there are plenty nice people and there are lots of vegetarians and vegans. There are many vegan/vegetarian restaurants and in "normal" restaurants there's still quite a lot to choose from. I'm sorry You've had a bad experience in Poland, I hope You'll be back some day and can change Your mind. Personally, I recommend Cracow, lovely city :). Have a nice day!

Back in 2011, I spent a summer in Eastern Europe as part of an anthropology course, we were doing ethnographies on the Romani in eastern Slovakia as well as the Rusyns in western Ukraine. One of the other students on the trip was vegan, and my god, she had the hardest time when it came to finding something to eat. She must have eaten kashi at every meal for the entire week we were in a small village in the Carpathian mountains, simply because the villagers were so unaccustomed to accommodating her peculiar dietary restrictions that they couldn't think of anything else to make for her that didn't contain meat or dairy in some form. We had a vegetable soup one night that had been flavoured with bacon (which, by their standards, was still technically "vegetarian") and she reacted the way an omnivore might react if they had been told that the meal they just ate contained the meat from a human baby. I actually heard Gogol Bordello for the first time at a restaurant in Ukraine, and after I returned home, I looked more into them and Eugene Hutz's career. Eventually, I stumbled across this wonderfully quirky film. This scene has always reminded me of that trip, and the poor girl who forgot the first rule of travel; when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

This problem could have been easily solved. Just order 3 normal plates. The vegetarian gives the sausages to Grandpa and Alex (one apiece). Alex gives his potato to the vegetarian and Grandpa can split his potato with Alex. That's it.
@AnalyticalSentient6 жыл бұрын
If the basis is ethical (as in ethical veganism, for example), then that would not solve the problem because it would probably be less likely to trigger any dissonance or possible internal consideration (in the two Ukrainian men) of the idea that purchase of animal flesh for consumption is ethically problematic...Tobey's character would still be funding the exploitation that enables such non-benign, needless indulgence.

Stereotypes can bring someone to laugh, but they also bring to think about cultural differences. And I don't think it is insulting the thing about meat or eating something "from" the floor (it has just touched it!), it showes that eating isn't a thing to take for granted, and that not all the world is U.S.A.
