Road noise is not great Power is not much The rest about the Echo is truly amazing. We have one as a family back up. 4 door automatic cheap to run and vey fuel economical. Its like a motorcycle with 5 seats and a roof so that you do not get wet on rainy days. The space inside is impressive for a small car and the ride is nice as well. One of the best cars Toyota ever made.

@A&B and don't just hit the A/C button, flip the fan off entirely, as the alternator is also bogging down the engine a bit from having the blower on. Trial and error over the nearly 20 years now that I've had two in the family. Rear window defroster also draws a lot. Both on at once means accelleration is even less than the normal 'that'll do' levels. Also, if you've ever driven an old VW bug or an early non-turbo diesel VW, these things are a damn rocket.

Phantom096 "one of the best cars Toyota ever made"? How do you figure? Don't get me wrong I love Toyotas and own a 2019 rav4, 98 Supra, 97 Celica and a 2018 Corolla. I really don't see how the echo is one of their best cars ever made. I would say that about the Celica or Supra but definitely not this thing. The 3s gte and 2jz engines I think were and still are Toyotas greatest engines ever built.

My aunt bought it new in 2002 and when she passed away in 2005 it only had 6,000 mi so i convinced my dad to keep it and when my dad passed away in 2013 i inherited the lil bug. It now only had 117,000 mi. I just love this lil car and it's killing me to have to get rid of it but i need safety features for out of town trips 😭 i hope it's next owner loves it as much as i did.

Hi my 2000 model just died a couple months ago because the gearbox went. I think it was a faulty MAF sensor that caused it to fail quicker. Was for a while having to drive using clutch to compensate for what the MAF sensor was doing. She managed 325,000. If I could afford to fix it I would. Here in Finland the cost of a second hand gearbox and mechanics time is just too great for my wallet just now. I find it almost heartbreaking as losing my Yaris Verso is like losing a loved member of the family :(

People can laugh as they want, but the thing about this car is that it was very easy to use, very easy to drive, even on long distances. It had a terrible plastic dashboard that turns into an oven in sunlight, ugly and slow steering and the interior was all but attractive, but the seats were great and relaxing, easy to get inside the car, light doors and of course very low fuel consumption and a very durable car. As for the driving, the car was nimble and had good suspension, however Toyota put a very slow steering - by slow it means you have to turn it a lot more than in other cars - which prevented this car from being more fun to drive. It could have been a very fun and almost sporty car if the steering was like in normal cars - the replacement Yaris had a much better steering but was a worse car overall with terrible seats and suspension.

I purchased a 2000 Toyota Echo new the first year the Echo was available. Fantastic fuel efficiency! It's now 19 years old and we still drive it every day. This was a very affordable, basic vehicle that I really loved driving. I prefer vehicles with the display in the center (such as the Echo and Prius). I like that I sat up high and had a good amount of head room for a small car. We have driven this car across the country, in heavy snow storms, and for daily commutes. It almost never had any mechanical issues. I don't think we had to make any repairs (other than a couple of factory recalls) for the first 100,000 miles! Even in the next 100,000 miles the repairs have not been too bad (we did have to replace the tires. muffler, pipe to muffler, and replace lights in the dashboard...and the original CD/ radio/ tape place).

the toyota echo, or the toyota platz as sold in south asian countries, tend to sell much better, as the people there live in much denser cities where fullsize and even midsize cars won't make it through tight traffic. Subcompacts and kei cars thrive in those areas along with compacts.

Have had mine for 17 years. Love it because only things I have had to get done is normal maintenance. Nothing has ever broken on it!! My only problem was finding a phone holder that would go on a curved surface. I guess it was made before that issue was a concern. One that you put in cup holder is too low to see it. I did find one with a small enough sticky base I could us on dash but the flattest place blocks the speedometer a bit. Great little car!

Already at 222000 km. The only repairs was small body repairs here and there, brakes , belts and that is it. Cheap on fuel, cheap on parts, easy to repair on your own. Almost no maintenance. First one I drove it for 14 years. Second one is already at 12 years and I drive in Canada - mud snow and salt 8 months in a year. So If you have one MR Vehicle Incompetence - Bring it over I will take it if the body is still in good condition
