It’s one of those things that makes you wonder; Did Mindy Kaling REALLY write some episodes of The Office? Because it really doesn’t correlate, how do you go from being credited as a writer of a show that has one of the best comedic tones in television history to a show that’s as tone deaf as a fetus?
@sideeyed76828 ай бұрын
@maltheri9833 Still, everything is just off, from the delivery to the tone of the jokes. Its almost as if her contribution in the writing room for The Office bundled down to just brainstorming ideas. At this point I’m not convinced she took creative control of any episode of The Office, Velma was presentation of her comedic voice and it just doesn’t add up.

@@sideeyed7682Well, let’s use some context clues! It’s like a mystery.. why the heck was Mindy’s name on The Office’s writing team? To answer this question we can look at an interview-gone-viral where Mindy herself admits to adlibbing a moment in a scene where she kisses the attractive (in her mind, clearly) male actor, without telling him about this beforehand. She then goes on to explain that the directors weren’t happy with her odd decision, so what does she do? Threaten their livelihoods of course! By brazenly admitting that she threatened to fire multiple staff on previous shows if they were to report her (let’s be honest) s**ual assault, it’s not too far off to think she might be more than willing to climb that hollywood credibility ladder.. by any means necessary. Lying about show writing talents is most definitely on her moral compass.

I am a gay man and can personally testify that I loathe how much Hollywood is shoving LGBTQ+ representation in every single thing and changing the sexual orientations of classic characters to be "more inclusive". It's not about actual inclusivity, it's about checking a box, like having a token black and Asian character thrown in the mix but not to actually represent minorities, but to exploit them. I'm tired of my sexuality being used as a form of sensationalism rather than writing well-fleshed out characters who just so happen to be gay, bi, whatever and I don't need *every single character* to be LGBTQ+ just because, without giving them any character development or personality beyond that. Their sexuality just *is* their personality and that's not really representing somoene like me. It makes religious nuts angrier at me when I'm not the one even responsible for these creative choices and leads to more discrimination in the long run because it fuels their assumption that I am trying to shove an "agenda" down their throat, but I hate all the preechy in-your-face messaging just as much as everyone else. I feel like shows like Velma are a perfect example of just how much modern Hollywood is completely detached from real-world issues to the point of using real people in exploitative ways and just stoking the fires of anger more and more.

I happen to think it’s also doing a disservice. It’s almost like you say so. What is this characters characterization. Well, their skin color, X, and X sexuality. That’s it they think they’re taught. They don’t actually have to create a personality for the character because they checked off certain boxes.
@gladdyyyyyyyyy8 ай бұрын
As a pansexual transgender man, the representation in this show also disgusts me. Our gender identities and sexualities do not make up our personalities, and it is bad representation like this that just makes people believe that they do. Good representation doesn't shove anything in your face. It is put in as fact without being forced, is treated as normal within the context of the show, and is not brought up repeatedly for the sake of screaming to the audience how diverse you are. Unless the purpose of the media is to explore the sexuality of the character, there is no need for it to be brought up repeatedly when it doesn't further the plot or have any narrative purpose.

This is an excellent video and I have nothing to add but this: There was a fan-made pilot of a Scooby Doo show that was like a CW drama in the style of Riverdale called Mystery Incorporated. It seems like a horrible idea to do, just like Riverdale, and even _that_ is leagues better than Velma. Like, for as bad of an idea as it is, it's actually well-done, well-casted, and not made by people who seem too incompetent and hateful to be millionaires like Mindy Kaling. There's also that Warner Bros movie with the Latina Velma, "Scoob" and that whole movie was just a commercial for WB IPs. I'm not a Scooby Doo fan, but even those two properties are infinitely more respectful and deserving of their existence than "Velma." The only thing I can think of that would be worse than this show was that cancelled CW Powerpuff Girls show that was going to have the three of them be promiscuous and queer, like just every woke show these days.
