In this video we will see how to make Pongal in Tamil. Ven Pongal recipe is a traditional south Indian breakfast made with freshly harvested rice. Ven Pongal / Khara Pongal is often served with vada, sambar and a variety of chutneys. Pongal as a serves to remind people the importance of agriculture and the commemorates the hard work of the farmers. Cooking of pongal in pots is a tribute to nature and farmers. Even though the use of freshly harvested grain adds more flavor to the recipe, we can use regular rice also for this recipe.

I prepared pongal today and it came very well. i didnt expect it will be tasty in first attempt itself. even i didnt use raw rice, i used sona masoori rice only. with raw rice i think it will be more tasty, will try next time. Thank you for the Recipe :)

Thank you for the simple recipe 🙂. We made this for dinner today. Instead of pasipparupu we used kadalapparupu, and used 5 cups of water, and on checking, found that the kadalapparupu was not well cooked, so I added 2 more cups of water and the result was perfect. thanks ka! this was excellent ...I used your recipe , but made one change . I used Saamai instead of rice & made saamai pongal. and it came out so well !! I guess , frying the payatham parupu and the rice(Saama in my case) at the beginning was the trick.

Rice and Daal require the same amount of water. 1 cup of rice requires 2 cups of water (1:2) similarly 1 cup of daal requires 2 cups of water (1:2). If you are adding 1 cup of rice and half a cup of daal, then the water you add is 3 cups of water. Depending on this proportion you cook rice and daal. As for spices, I do this calculation - If the share is for a couple of people, then 1 hand full of cashews and 1 teaspoon of mustard and jeera.
