The Zill mango was my dad's favorite mango by far (he's in heaven now). I believe it is one of the best mangos as well and have 2 trees in my yard. However I am quite partial to the Fascell of which I've had many failed attempts at grafting since I have quite a large brown thumb, and limited access to scions.

So the second Graft don’t have to be lined up with the trees cambium layer ? The tree cut seemed much wider than the scion ?
@Pepesplants5 жыл бұрын
The cambium layer has two parts. Cork cambium and vascular cambium. It appears that the entire scion is nicely connected in the center so it will fuse. The cambium is responsible for the regeneration of Phloem and Xylem. As the cambium regenerates the wound heals. I believe this is why Walter is making an important point about not going to deep and destroying the cambium or not going deep enough. My best educated guess. Thanks Walter you are amazing and thanks to Truly Tropical for the video.

Hi there iv grafted a scion on a mango seedling i had two mango seedling and did two different graft on it one was venear graft and the other one was clift graft. I did my graft on the 13 December 2017 the clift graft scion became brown but the venear graft is still green how long does it take for the graft to be successful and also i live in the U.K. but the plants are indoor
@TrulyTropical6 жыл бұрын
If the light available to the plant is not very strong, grafts could take longer that in more tropical areas. If the scions are still green in a month or so... at least in my experience... chances are pretty good that the graft will take, but it might take months before new growth emerges.

correct From what I've seen, grafting a scion with a larger diameter than the base plant is not as successful as the reverse situation

Thanks for such a nice well explained video. I am a bigner and forgive me if my observation is wrong. In Walter's 2nd graft, cut on the branch was wider than the scion? And the scion was kept equispaced, without matching the cambium on any one side? Tape used was stretchable grafting tape and not paraffin tape or buddy tape. Kindly confirm.

I noticed that, too. It probably doesn't matter with this particular type of graft--since that part of the rootstock will be cut off later. Also, all the scion cambium layer seems to be touching the rootstock cambium continuously...just extra left. Guess that's happens when a master with experience does it...very instinctive, less literal! Thanks for the video!
@nicholas84795 жыл бұрын
Yes, I was taught to match either left or right cambium layer, but then again my grafting is terrible.

Lots of good tips and techniques! This type of grafting is completely different from what I do. I tried a modification of Walter's method on a potted mango, and my first (and only) graft took! Also I've used some of the concepts in certain circumstances in my normal grafting. There's always something new to learn!

Is it possible to do cleft graft on same rootstock ? Any advantage on veneer graft than cleft graft ? Thanks in advance.
@TrulyTropical6 жыл бұрын
It seems like there would be a quick answer to your question, but it's complicated. There are advantages and disadvantages to all the types of grafting. Walter grafts onto much older wood than I usually do. I'll try to do a video comparing the different grafting methods that I have tried.

@EddieMunozep3 жыл бұрын
Chris...I see that your method of top working trees is just to add new varieties to existing trees not necessarily to change over a tree..I am assuming that mangos lend themselves to this. I have been told that avocados tend to have a dominant branch/trunk and weaker grafts wont flourish when grafting onto an existing tree..
@Zennofobic5 жыл бұрын
so you can make a multi-variety tree? Like Ice Cream & Fruit Punch in one?

Absolutely! We have a few trees in the grove that have more than one mango variety on them.
