I most definitely would have loved to have seen more New Orleans class vessels during the Dominion War instead of all the Mirandas. I always thought one of unique aspects of the New Orleans classes torpedo pods was despite each of the pods having an limited magazine of around twenty-five apiece which had to be reloaded externally by EVA/Worker Bee, they had a longer accelerator barrel compared to the torpedo launchers of the Miranda/Constellation/Constitution vintage which allowed the torpedo to be fired at a much higher velocity.

Miranda's were destroyer class DD where as this is a fast frigate FF guess that's why we saw more of the DD in the war, probably had a bit more durability. They also probably had more of them in storage and if think about weapons the miranda was as equipped or better equipped the constitution cruisers CC for war fighting..

I think the torpedoes would been hard repair and could break if they took to much damage but i like the layout all over the ship giving it a lot of fire power for its size kinda like the defiant with ablative armor a few tropedeos tubes like that could have upped the firepower of a lot of ships i wonder why it wasnt a thing but the war was long and upgrades would have easily giving ships great range... With speed.
@ezibricks24243 жыл бұрын
@@henrybleisch9025 the federation suffered what all the worlds militaries suffer in times of prolonged war, they start off with throwing thier best at it but as time goes on they cant replace as fast as they loose. Instead of fielding the latest gen 5 equipment they start fielding gen 3 or 4. The same is true of the federation they must have had a massive quantity of Miranda's in Moth balls having been building them for so long that it made much more sense to use them, especially with how many were upgraded overtime and most likely crew knowledge and adaptability on them. The New Orleans on the other hand although well armed for its class, I don't think it was well suited for fast moving fleet battles like we saw in the war. I couldnt imagine these would be used to defend against the fast attack ships of the dominion and I can't see photon barrages hitting them due to how fast and agile they were. I could only really see them being used in large fleet battles where they would be used for long range torpedo volleys from static positions. I know they were used in the border wars but hitting a cardasion ship was probably lots easier.

The addition of the 'torpedo pods' allowed what would have been a mediocre frigate sized vessel to 'punch above it's weight'. Thus making the Class far more dangerous to any foes it might encounter. It is fairly rare that a star ship's beam weapons do more damage than a torpedo, and the Cardasians could 'bolster' their shields by partially tuning them to enable them to better resist beam weapon fire. But a Torpedo's massive strike of chaotic energies no one (except perhaps the Borg) could tune their shields to resist. The Cardasians could hope to avoid torpedo hits by a normal ship, since it would fire a mere handful of torpedoes in a torpedo spread. But the New Orleans Class's multiple Torpedo Pods allowed it to fire a relative landslide of torpedoes at it's target, making any avoidance patterns nearly useless. Which, upon reflection, explains why Cardassian Vessels would turn and run from such an attack. Perhaps I am more 'aggressive', But I feel that Star Fleet was rather slow to get around to such a heavily torpedo armed ship design. And if you look at the New Orleans, it's not really designed for the task. Not really. Instead, it has three Torpedo Pods added to it's hull. Giving it a heavier throw weight of torpedoes. Although successful, and proven to be useful, the ship was not 'designed' for the use it was put to. The New Orleans Class is yet another example of Star Fleet 'retro-fitting' a previous design to enhance it's capability, rather than a full up redesigned vessel. Just my thoughts, speaking, Frank-ly

This reminds me of a tactic that US Rangers on deep reconnaisance patrols in Vietnam, called a Ranger Roll. A small team, like 6, would move in single file through jungle trails. What makes them unique was that they did not carry M-16 assault rifles, but they all carried sepcial lightened M-60 GP/medium machineguns. If the patrol made contact with a superior enemy force (and with only six guys, the enemy will almost always be superior), the first one in line will fire an entire belt of ammo in the direction of the enemy. Once exhausted, he "rolls" to the right and retreats to a certain distance (and reloads) while the second in line opens up full auto, and so on. The immense firepower often made the whole companies stop and allowed the Rangers to break contact and escape. Some enemy units actually retreated. That is because the firepower in that short period of time was the equivalent of a full company (about 150) of soldiers. That firepower could not be sustained, but it was enough to force the enemy to take cover and possibly retreat from a seemingly "superior" force. I suspect the large salvoes of photon torpedoes made the New Orleans seem much more powerful than it was.

Back when this was released in STO, it got me back playing it for a few months, after giving up on the game 3 years earlier when pvp just just finally made impossible. It will take them releasing something like a Norway, Niagara, or Springfield to the game to make me do that again. Branding the New Orleans a frigate was always an odd choice, because though it is relatively short and compact, its only small compared to super battleships like the galaxy and nebula. Heavy cruiser is the word they are looking for, and judging by its arsenal easily the most powerful in the quadrant, until something like the vorcha or akira class was launched. Those oval saucers can contain a lot of volume, this ship has around 1,000,000 m^3, 20% more than work horse excelsior and 35% more than later high tech light cruisers intrepids. With proboly double the firepower and less than half the displacement of the ambassador class, they would likely be the most feared opponent during the mid to late period of the Cardassian war. All those literal galaxy components, downsized, would make this more of a mid 2350s design, all those designs would not have been locked in the 40s.
@venomgeekmedia98863 жыл бұрын
it definitely is on the heavier side of a frigate. although i don't think it was as capable as the later 'anti borg' ships remember its still built as an explorer first. combat ship 2nd. while i wouldn't agree it is stronger than the ambassador it definitely gave it a run for its money.
@dontdrunkimshoot82203 жыл бұрын
@@venomgeekmedia9886 If they were to fight i too think an ambassador would best it. Its just that its best phaser shot could be at least twice as powerful as an ambasidor's, and if those pods all fired torpedoes it could engage squadrons of lesser ships. The ambassador could proboly absorb 3 times as much punishment and hit most targets with multiple arrays at once, its DPS potential and endurance would still be much higher. though i don't really like those 3 pods as weapon banks really, i haven't been able to puzzle out what they could be thats satisfactory. perhaps a precursor to the nebula class's large sensor array, and advanced communication equipment that enable it to act as a flagships to fleets. Most ships of the class may not have them at all, the single blown to hell example we have seen just happened to have them.

I'm a huge fan of modular designs, so the New Orleans is a fav of mine. The bottom module seems a little awkward having a simple mounting point, but that's a nitpick. If I had the chance to adjust her appearance, I'd make the mount larger and curved so there's a flow. Important detail on the Intrepid which affects the New Orleans' future: That recess in the Intrepid's saucer is Starfleet's solution to a problem with all preexisting warp drives. Warp drives before the Intrepid damage subspace, and the recess is like a secondary deflector with the sole purpose of solving that problem. Same reason for the tri-cyclic warp core and variable geometry nacelles. As much as Starfleet wouldn't mind continuing the New Orleans, it had no choice but to design a completely new series of vessels that could use this technology. They kept their old fleet in service, but they had to at least scale down production if not discontinue older models. This might beg the question of a secondary deflector on the Sovereign for which I really have no good answer. Maybe the Sovereign was too late in its development phase or it found another solution? If I had a chance to pursue purely cannon from the TNG/DS9/Voy era, I'd design new ships with these features as they subtly but positively add to the ascetics. Ascetics from the later series are way over the top to me.

when you compare the amount of torpedo launchers on this ship with other ships you realise that this ship it armed to the teeth. the ship I think would really come into its element as a defence ship or artillery ship due to the amount of torpedoes it has armed on it. the new Orleans should have been produced in bigger numbers like the nebula was, a new orleans in a sector could be stations as a heavy hitter. imagine that if say an intrepid ran into trouble then you could have lots of these ship as far reaching power bases due to their relativly small size they could be quite easy to produce it would send most enemy's running. This ship also could have seen good action as a raider as well, jump into a systerm fire a massive volley of torpedoes at the unshielded shipyards and ships then warp out. Not even going to hide the fact that I love this ship so much that I have a uss Kyshu model on my desk. @@venomgeekmedia9886 Well, when you consider the New Orleans came first and the rest of the Brahms line of ships are developed from her, then it makes more logical sense to consider the Galaxy to be an enlarged evolution of the New Orleans

In the "wet" Navy. Isn't a frigate smaller than a destroyer?
@venomgeekmedia98863 жыл бұрын
so a frigate is a general purpose vessel and will often be deployed alone. a destroyer is more specialized and will occupy a specific role in a larger task force.

The thing that I think nearly screwed Starfleet was that its policy of ship building was quite unfocused. From the time of the Tomad Incident where the Romulans went isolationist and the Klingons were rebuilding due to the destruction of Praxis; the Federation just kind of meadered on with the using the Excelsor and Mirandas as cruisers and frigates while building a bunch of bigger multi-role vessels to be the tip of the spear from the Constellation, Ambassador, Nebula and Galaxy (a role that all of them were not good at and had too few numbers to do so). As for frigates you have the the New Orleans but again not enough. The fleet seems to be quite unbalanced. Ships did not have any kind of solid combat ability, the newer ships were too far and few in between and the most numerous ships were getting too old. This was good enough against losers like the Cardassians but against the Borg and Dominion...Starfleet barely won. Nothing against the New Orleans but if I was in charge in Starfleet by the 2440s I would have said it is time to relegate the Mirandas as cargo haulers, troop transports, hospital ships, frigate and police system patrol ships after giving them one last overhaul. Then mass produce the New Orleans class to be the heavy frigates to take the place of the Miranda. Even that would have given Starfleet a better chance of surviving the 2460s and early 2470s
@venomgeekmedia98863 жыл бұрын
yeah i mean with the destruction of praxis starfleet basically skips the 'Excelsior' generation with the derivatives of that class seeing little development and then starfleet basically muddles its way through the 1st half of the 24th century.

@@venomgeekmedia9886 It is kind of like the Isreali tank force prior to the Merkava. Where it was a mix of M4 Sherman tanks that have been upgrade to an insane degree, plus some Centurions. The problem was that by the 1970s even the IDF realized that this was not a viable way to keep its tank forces going since the technology gap within the tank force and vis a vis its opponents was way too out of whack. Then once the British cut them out of the Challenger program the Israelis had to just go and rebuild their entire tank force with Merkavas.

I wish they would add this to Star Trek Online (I would be happier if they don't reclassify it like they do many Frigates they've made playable) It sucks they weren't used in the DS9 on screen fleet battles. Edit: I'm not sure I would count a Nebula as a mini-Galaxy like I would a New Orleans though. IMO its more a Galaxy Saucer with Warp Nacelles, and the upper pod added on,

@@venomgeekmedia9886 I just checked after reading your reply. Its a Fleet ship and none of my alts are in fleets remotely close to the level needed to access it. And it was reclassified. Checking the dates it was released back before they decided to make Frigates that could be used as a Player Character's ship so there are many Frigate classes from the lore that were reclassified.in the game plus several ships in the game that are Frigates if NPCs are using them but are classified as something else when under a player's control. Right now there are only five Player Frigates in the game I've found in the game. Three are Federation only with one of those being a Fleet ship. The others are useable by any faction. For some reason there are no KDF exclusive Frigates even though there are Klingon Frigates in the Tabletop RPGs (Where some ships were brought into the game), PC games, and some in the novels. Along with Frigates being used by some of the factions absorbed by the KDF in the game, and a few NPC Klingon ships from the civil war arc identified as Frigates with no class name given. Plus there's the Frigates the larger Klingon Carriers can launch so they definitely have them but none have been given to the players yet.

I like the Starfleet battles table top game that's what I cut my teeth on thought it's kind of cool and then it was cool to watch it evolved into the online version on there just kind of wish that some of the modders would bring back some of the Star Trek on federals ships into like sins and solar empire mods things of that nature where the consentee the laryn you know those races were represented besides the tholins in the corn I mean nothing against them but there are and the Orion's but you know if the Starfleet battleships show up in those months that I've ever seen

She maybe small. Yet she is scrappy and has a bite to put a Galaxy-Class to shame. The only reason she did so poorly against the Borg Attack st Wolf 359. Poor Tactics. As her loadout with the extra Torpedo Pods. She would have put a serious hurt on a Borg Cube. Would not destroy it. Yet if you put enough fire on a central point. Would have crippled the cube a little bit. Also, with an upgrade to Quantum Torpedoes. That bite most likely got a lot bigger. After all. If the Miranda-Class can survive this long and still be a workhorse of the Federation. Even for how old the class is. New Orleans-Class could likely last longer. Be double the workhorse the Miranda could ever do.

@@venomgeekmedia9886 i guess my point about the nebula is that it has all the parts of the galaxy class except the neck and all those parts are roughly the same size as the galaxy class making its its internal volume relatively exactly the same as the galaxy class. while the ship in the video actually changes in scale, one can see the window size change. the nebula is more of a kit bash than the one in the video. how can it be considered a light cruiser when its virtually the same ship.
