In this episode, we fix the most common oil leak issue on our 4.4L TDV8 Range Rover L405. The leak causes the oil to contaminate the coolant system. Typically, the leak is the oil cooler gasket and can be replaced very easily in a 3 to 30 hour minor repair. It makes also sense to replace the two o-rings of the turbo charger oil supply pipe on the back side of the engine.
We are not liable for any harm you do to your car, your engine, your surroundings or yourself. Use the information given in this video at your own risk.
Thanks for watching,
Vera & Christian

I am currently sitting in my lounge looking at my 33 year old Land Cruiser with a new MOT. I had to do some welding, I have only ever stuck metal together, not really welding. The MOT test guy said my welding is atrocious, I was so happy, from sticking metal together to atrocious welding in a year. I am hoping to be a bad welder this time next year.

I have to say there are some good things about Land Rover ownership, they keep one busy, they keep one out of trouble and they keep one of the streets (roads, tracks!?) Seriously though great repair and camera work too, hope it was the problem. Happy belated birthday as well. Meanwhile we just went right across Australia again in our Toyota LC in the worst weather ever, floods, wind, rain like sheets and mud, lots of clay mud! No problems. Only special people would rather fix their Land-Rovers on their Birthday, than drive them. Christian and Vera have a birthday at least once every week! We, who watch this channel every Sunday, also have a birthday each week. Followed by 6 days either worrying about our own LR’s, or thinking we are really lucky they haven’t broken down….yet! Maybe we just don’t look at them in detail enough.

Be shure to replace coolant expansion tank cap. A number of coolant leaks are result of stuck pressure relief valve inside this cap. So, if it starts to leak somewhere because of pressure inside cooling system can't escape thru the valve and finds weak spots over and over again.

Happy belated birthday Christian. It would be good to analyze the oil stains inside the tank. It could tell you wether it is old oil from the machine or new oil that was accidentally put in the cooling system. It is amazing how much carbon was removed from the inlet. I am just wandering if mine is in the same condition. I have always thought of this inevitable situation and try to avoid it, All the best! Galo Pérez

Christian, whilst you had the oil cooler removed it would have been worthwhile doing a pressure test with air, probably from the coolant side. I've had two coolers fail internally, albeit on my old Passat, causing the same contamination issue. Another great video!

When I bought mine, some 3 years ago, it just had the oil cooler replaced. Apparently it had been a severe leak, and the mechanics had done a very poor job cleaning up the mess. It was smelling burnt oil for a couple of months. But that, along with an unnecessary gearbox adaptation reset after a fluid change, that made the gearbox slip on almost every gear for several weeks, I got it dirt cheap. The oil smell slowly faded and the clutches started to grip again after it had again started to get a grip on realities. Looking at all the carbon buildup in your butterfly valve (exactly: It is not a throttle!) and inlet manifold, I think I've got a plan. Mine has done 208 000 km now, so I'll, at least, stick a borescope in there.
@Vera_and_Christian

Mine has the slipping trans too. I did a fluid change and adaptation reset. It shifts like new but it is not as solid on launch when cold. Not as good as my LR4 TDV6. Christian

A lot of cars that spurt oil out of rear seals etc and sprays oil mist into the oil breather that feeds warm air into the air box. Many times it's a defective PCV valve causing over pressure. My friend worked at a Volvo dealership and it was very common. Same for my W211 mercedes too.

I have recently discovered your channel and am much enjoying it. I drive a P38 with a BMW engine. I brought it as a project but watching you I get my fix without getting either cold or dirty. It doesn't break, the HVAC book is displayed but the heater works, and I did have problems with the engine speed momently increasing by 300rpm, changed every sensor and then found I could have sorted it by cleaning the MAF sensor, BUT it runs perfect and appears to start easy when the engine is hot. I was a little confused by the term 'mole crawler' but then I saw 'Mall Crawler' in one of your comments, and then I knew what you meant, you meant a 'Chelsea Tractor'.

I have recently changed the oil cooler housing on my L322 4.4 tdv8 but also changed the EGR housing to block gasket which is located under the aluminium section in the middle of the V, if you think the bit you did was hard, it's a special world of pain. One solution for comfortable access to the engine bay is to use your two post lift. Raise it to just above engine height (without a vehicle on it) with the arms facing inwards then strap down a sheet of plywood with a piece of foam or similar then, with the bonnet up, drive the RR carefully under it. Shame your lift is outside as it might be a bit chilly at the moment 🥶

My goodness, if u want a Land Rover then u need to make sure u want to work on a Land Rover. I mean when u buy a Landie, u need to also buy a 3 car garage to have the space to work on the Landie and still have space for all the tools. I love cars but im loving the idea of 3 cylinder cars as they become more and more complex. At least u have space with a 3 cylinder. ps. u guys are a inspiration and a warning to prospective landie owners. Nice.

Hello I have just watched the episode when you find out the issue. The expression on your face at the end , no you’re warm no you’re cold getting hotter 😅. I am a now retired flt engineer, I have been in your position so many times. You do not have to make excuses for not finding the fault, I’m sure everyone that watches you have been in that position. It’s part of messing with any vehicle. I was a mobile engineer for 30 plus years you never ever know everything. Every day is a school day, when you get a fault like you have just found I pretty sure you will never forget that 🤔. I enjoy your debacles 😬 I’m pretty sure I have watched most of your series of projects. I would love to have your facilities unfortunately I am doing jobs on the drive but never mind. I am a long time Land Rover lover ( I now have a 110 / 1989 in fairly good condition). LANDROVER YOU LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM, ONCE ITS IN YOUR BLOOD STREAM YOU ARE HOOKED 😁. I live in England home of the said vehicle 👍. The program you provide are interesting informative ( you have way more than I have ever had) and of course with the occasional OMG thrown in entertaining. Keep up the good work, I hope you enjoy the queen. Personally I never have dreamed of owning a fancy car , but if I did the new top of the range Range Rover driving down the motorway looks the business. Finally as I said the obvious relief on your face was palpable your whole body language after the work you did . Says a lot about Land Rover shoddy design, but more to point 2700 euro for the repair. I found before I finished work sensors computer running a vehicle is fine but it takes the common sense and experience factor. If you sent it to land to Land Rover for repair what would they have done, moved that plastic bag that you found and charged you , your vehicle is ready now sir !! . Makes you think don’t it. Anyway good luck keep up the good work, you really made me smile today. And now I’m boring my wife with all my stories from work. Stay safe.

Just a quick tip. When you buy a new battery keep the little terminal caps off it. When you pop the negative terminal of the ol’ Rangie pop one on the negative terminal. Greetings from a Toyota owner in Australia. I can confirm Range Rover owners do put the wrong fluids in the wrong holes

Car ownership is a hobby which you if you can DIY. If not it is a very expensive money pit, where others waste your time and money without necessarily curing the original issue. Thats Life, Not LR Time ideloigy. Good work guys, Stay rich, and keep sending the message.
