Our new to us 2015 Range Rover L405 with 4.4L TDV8 has a restricted performance issue. That reduced the purchase price quite a bit for us but are we able to fix this problem easily with a tyrap and a piece of wire? Hope you enjoy the video.

Thanks for watching,

Suspect the dirty air ducts (also known as the queen Mary ducts) between hood and intake are getting blocked, likely that black nvh material you had noted in the first video during test drive. Love your videos, and great you now have a L405.

Ha ha, when I watched the test drive video I did think that it was odd hanging loose like that, slightly at an advantage in that I am JLR SVO and my role is mainly around problem solving power train issues. Have been watching LR tine for a while and will continue to do so, I find them entertaining and educational.

What puzzles me is the second diagnostics message (the one at the top) stating Air Flow Too High. That is quite misleading with an airflow restriction. Is that an artifact of a vacuum buildup in the inlet?

Guys I’m so glad ye bought this car, even though I’m not at L405 stage yet I’ve gone from my 06 disco 3 to a 12 L322 with the same engine so I’ll be watching all these videos with interest. Christian joined fullfatrr the same week I did so I think we purchased on a similar date. I’m 4 weeks into all the same jobs so it’s nice to know I’m not alone 😀.

I had an issue with restricted performance on a Freelander 2.2d and the fault codes pointed to turbo issues, but it was actually glow plugs that caused the problem, so it's not always easy to diagnose these type of faults.

As someone that would like to own an L405 in the future (maybe a sport instead, but the mechanicals should be the same), I'm very interested in the content. Christian is the type of guy that will take apart a no start engine before checking if there’s fuel in the tank. I owned a L322 RR that had the same problem. Sold it before I got to the bottom of it. RR’s are incredibly more sensitive and complex-that’s why I went back to a Discovery 4 (LR4 here in the U.S.) Your videos are part of my Sunday morning routine. Keep up the good work and Happy New Year!

A little tip re the broken studs, Iv'e been doing this for over fifty years. Weld a heavy section washer (they are called form C) on to the stud first. This is easier as you dont have to reach in so far to weld. Then weld a nut to the washer, get a washer a little bigger in diameter than the nut then weld the outer edge of the nut to the washer. You can weld the inside of the nut as well to be belt and braces. Then let the nut cool until you can almost touch it before burning your fingers. At this temp give it plenty wd40 or similar. Let it cool right down dont rush it, have patience, Give it more juice then attempt to screw it out, if it starts to resist carefully screw back in again with more juice. If it only moves a bit dont be tempted to keep going screw it back in. Keep this up until it comes out. If it breaks off start again. Take your time dont rush it use plenty of patience. Happy new year, John.

Excellent job drilling that broken bolt out, I like the idea of the adjacent bolt to act as a drilling guide. I know you’re probably way ahead of me now, and I’m not trying to be a desktop mechanic, but have you considered using left hand fluted drills (anti-clockwise rotation) for drilling out bolts. I have a selection of smaller sized left hand flute drills, and I’ve on a couple of occasions had the drill bite into a bolt and unscrew it as I drilled into it. I know it may not have worked on that steel bolt in alloy if it had partially corroded in. But with the left hand drills at least any rotational force is in the correct direction if it bites. They are available on Amazon and other places.

If the vacuum comes from the air pressure drop across the air filter then a missing filter will stop it working , or a low drop air filter will also stop it working , it a blockage in the pipe or a lak in the vacuum pipe OR a crack in the air box slowing air in on the wrong side of the filter

You a newer Land Rover breaking down already. 😅 Thats normal for Discoverys. I should know i own a Disco 2. I received it as a gift from my sister. It was a single owner truck. The drive train was never serviced. Typical of people who just drive and dont even check the oil. When i received it. Original key was lost. But a locksmith had made a temporary key. I spent about 1 year doing the basic maintenance. New brakes. New rotors all the way around. New front wheel bearing assembly. Removed both pumpkins or crown and ring assembly units. Cleaning the inside out. Rear had flooded with water. No mater. Cleaning.. cleaning. Then i got my registration done. New plates and new insurance. Drove it. Noticed i was losing coolant. But no drips?? But as the engine warms up. I can smell burnt coolant?? Then discoverd to the disco 2 had blown head gasket. I ordered the update hesd gaskets from a land Rover parts place. I bought all of the stuff i needed. Plus a new water pump and hoses. I took some time off and replaced the head gaskets and also did a tune up while i had the room. To this day..310k miles. Last month my wife noticed coolant tracks on the Parking spot. Now i have a weeping radiator. Its my spring or summer project. I hope my local radiator shop can fix it. Keeping my toes crossed.

Great channel! Thank you very much! My guess is that the "unexpected" operation is the root of the problem. This means that the actuator is opening when it should not or visa versa. You have proved the operation so the problem is coming from the solenoid valve. This can either be electrical or mechanically driven. It's a simple coil to to me it should not actuate correctly once and then different next time. This suggests it's either and unexpected electrical pulse telling it to operate or the little valve is passing vacuum when it should not. If you say you could have fixed it on the way to the big M then it's probably a leak on the vacuum circuit and not a loose electrical connection on the solenoid. Can't wait for next year. Happy new year.

Faulty sensor? A tip. If your TDV8 goes into "restricted performance" mode, pull over, turn off the engine, get out of the car, lock it, then unlock it & get back in. 9 times out of 10, you will be back to full power........ for a while.

Another great video for a Toyota owner who knows nothing about Land Rovers. Your methods of diagnostics are a good lesson. Santa just bought me the Gedore Red socket set that you use. I have wanted one for years, even before seeing it used on your channel. I have plenty of sockets but I thought it would be a good set to keep in the back of the Land Cruiser. (Just to look pretty, we never fix anything on Land Cruisers.) It is the cheaper Gedore range made in Taiwan, but is is so bloody German. Sockets are sockets but this set contains every bit you could think of, Ribe, triple square, 5 point Tx for the VW/Audi's, Tx up to T70, who uses T70? But if I need one it is there. Love the channel, thanks for all your effort.
@Vera_and_Christian

👍👌But I have had the 1/4 inch pivotal extension fail on me. It loosened to much. And also the 15mm 1/2 socket tore the first time we used it. I got both replaced under warranty and I did not had to send the entire set in. Also make sure to check your car for nuts and bolts not covered in that set. Land Rover Discoverys have, for example, two 12point bolts installed, one in the brake calibers, and the other somewhere in the suspension. We carry those in addition to that set. Happy New Year🙋‍♀️

Happy New Year and looking forward to more Above and Beyond antics for 2024. I don't know if HRH is new enough to be an 'open house' model, apparently freely accessible to lowlife armed with an antenna, some wire and a transmitter to detect and relay your key's wireless signal to open doors, start and drive it away, but investigating and maybe confirming that keeping your keys in a biscuit tin Faraday cage might be interesting and valuable for long-suffering owners.
