I read a poem titled Return of the Subjunctive. I had to look it up and found this vid. I am a retired inner city middle school teacher. In my years of teaching, I was never encouraged to teach grammar, spelling, or correct usage. It was all whole language. I admire the structure that is presented here. Among my better teaching moments are the times I taught traditional spelling and grammar on my own, unbeknownst to the Admin. Good for you

I'm familiar with that poem. And I remember when whole language came on to the scene. We were told to put away grammar, spelling, and phonics books. Big mistake. Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for a very clear and concise explanation of the subjunctive mood. Was there a time in the history of English that the verbs in subjunctive mood inflect as they do in the Romance languages?
