That's the wrong question in my opinion. The question should be; Can we ever get rid of nuclear weapons? The answer is, sadly, no. It's a pandora's box that has been opened and cannot be closed on the world. Just like humans discovering fire or the firearm once something is discovered it cannot be "un-discovered". Someone, somewhere will have a nuclear bomb. It's best to be prepared for it by having your own.

I understand your concern, but to have nothing we would have to assume that the world is full of humans who respect life and honor homeland rights, which is not the case. Unfortunately, the world has shown over and over that there are countries where their philosophy is to raid, conquer and destroy. Our stockpile serves as a deterrent more than anything to Russia and China, where dictators and other rulers have constant tension with the US. It's not bad to have a gun in your house if all the criminals have them too. Please note that I am not equating other countries with criminals, but rather making a separate analogy. @@bimasetyaputra8381 They need to be armed first. They don't arm them they're ready to launch, on top of that, some missiles will arm in transit to the target after already launching. Other than some radiation, an unarmed nuclear warhead atop a ICBM in a silo is pretty benign. Edit: It's the same reason Anti-ICMB missiles work as well as they do. Just because the nuclear warhead is intercepted, doesn't mean the resulting collision and explosion is enough to set off the warhead. Nuclear warheads are *very* complicated, and don't just randomly explode :)
