There are three things to consider when evaluating risk, 1 how bad does the risk suck should it happen, 2 how easy is it to avoid, 3 how likely is it to occur. I was topping up the petrol tank today but the trigger of the nozzle could not be held in the pressed configuration. I used a station for right sided petrol tanks but pulled the nozzle over to the left side since that was the only one available for my car which was left sided. I had to keep my hand pulling on the nozzle tube because if I let go, the nozzle would fall out from the tube being pulled back to the right side since it was attached to an extendable string. I asked my mum to check how full the petrol tank was and she said almost 70%. Then I asked her if she turned the engine off and she said yes. As I was about to press the trigger on the nozzle, she told me that the engine was still on. I asked her why did she say the engine was off when it was not and she said she thought it was off. If I had pressed the trigger the petrol could have exploded and caused me severe burns because the engine would have been on. Even if I had let go of the nozzle, the nozzle would have been pulled out by the extendable string and the petrol would have sprayed or dripped on my hands and body since it would have been pulled back to the right side of the car.

I never thought about it until now but your engines belts running against the pulleys has to build up a ton of static electricity.
@ram89572 Жыл бұрын
The pulleys are metal. And connected to other metal parts that would be grounded to the frame of the vehicle. So no static would build that way. Static builds in you the individual, which can be discharged, resulting in a tiny spark that may ignite gasoline vapor. This video is both a lie by structure and lie by omission. They have taken 2 completely separate points and conflated them. Then they have given information regarding only 1 of those topics. The information regarding the other topic has been omitted. So because of that, the average person is going to accept both points as true even though they never explained even a single solitary reason as to how a running engine poses a threat. Let's think about it though. Your engine's spark is contained in a sealed area. No spark is open to the air. Your engine and exhaust remain just as hot for the amount of time that a fillup takes. So heat is not the concern here even though some parts might be enough to cause a flame if gas came into direct contact. But again that heat is the same whether the engine is running or off in that time frame. Now let's also consider this - vehicles enter and exit the gas station with their engines running constantly while other people are filling up. The engine running does not pose a statistically significant risk.

Bubbles are introduced into the fuel in the tank constantly by fuel sloshing around while driving. More importantly the fuel pickup is located at the bottom of the tank, so bubbles would have to defy gravity to travel downward to get sucked up into the feed line. I suppose if your car was upside down, then yes, it could suck up a lot of bubbles and air. But then again if your car is upside down you'll probably be more concerned about why it is upside down than your fuel pump being damaged. Chances of a running fuel injected vehicle catching fire are practically zero. Older carbureted vehicles significantly higher, but still very low.

I think it's important to remember it's technically possible but to call it "rare but real" is misleading. Maybe I'm wrong but there has not been a fire due to leave the car running while pumping gas at a modern gas station. Something else was going on in the video shown. I did some research and there have been 200 fires caused by static electricity at the pump it is said this is from the gas fumes in the air. However modern pump systems capture that gas so it's not released in the air so there should be no fumes to light. I'm pretty sure that's why gas pumps smell less gassy now a days
@dylanzelkin8506 Жыл бұрын
Why wouldn't u ask an engineer who actually understands how a car works... U can leave ur car on, the odds of ur gas tank catching fire due to the engine are unrelated to whether ur car is on or off because there is the no functional difference in the way the car operates whether the car is being filled or not (because the ignition of the chemical reaction is in a closed system disconnected from the gas tank)... Also the engine temperature is not going to change significantly across the 10 seconds it takes to get out of ur car and start filling it up after uve had to drive it to the gas station... The static electricity is plausible but improbable at best, and it's unrelated to whether ur car is running or not...

God damn the amount of people who think leaving the car on at the pump is dangerous blows my mind. I've been asked twice in 18 years to turn off my engine at the pump. Even if you turn your car off the engine and muffler are still piping hot. The gas tank is usually located at the opposite end of the engine. It's an open air environment, so fumes dissipate almost instantaneously. Static exists with the engine off and on. I'd venture to guess that tens of millions of people around the country fill up with the engine on every week, and we almost never have instances of fires at the pump.

So hol up. Why tf are there signs all around at gas stations then? I’ve been reading comments and I am with you guys. I hear y’all out. I’m now just laughing at the thought of all these signs. What’s the purpose then? Anyone know?

One of them is they stop their car and forget to put it on parking gear. That happens lot compared to actually catching fire this way. I heard older cars like 70s or 80s much likely catch fire while pumping, but still the odds were extremely low.

Only happens when people drive their clapped out 1987 Lincoln up to the pump.

Ya so today i pumped gas while the car was on accident, more scared if theres more of a long term problem with the engine
@jakethesnake47254 жыл бұрын
There’s no long term damage, I have a diesel and I leave my truck on when pumping because diesel fumes don’t explode

I have a Cammed Sport car that’s tuned and I ALWAYS PUMP GAS WITH THE CAR RUNNING. Does nothing to the car or engine. Just can’t have A phone, lighter or be smoking when pumping. 😂😂😂
