Vermeer 605L Baler: Charging the Bale Tension Cylinders

Had to replace some hydraulic hoses on my baler.

Ironic is the best word, since I am looking at a few Vermeer's myself!! Heck yeah Mr Pete! Very good explanation of the process! Now me, I would have done all that...all would have been well, 2 rolls in would have blown the hose 🤣🤣🤣 Good call on preventative maintenance there!! Look fwd to seeing it spit out some rolls soon!! Thank you Nelson. Generally, Vermeer makes pretty good equipment. I will say the netwrap system on these 605Ls is a bit fussy. Of course, that's not an issue if you're just using twine. This one is just fine for what little hay I make any more. If I was still making 200 acres of hay I'd probably try to trade up to a 605M.

Very nice and interesting.. Vermeer baler are very good balers. I had little trouble with mine other than normal wear issues

I sure am glad agri supply has a great selection of houses already made up. The man at the local NAPA store makes them but he is very expensive. Glad you got yours all ready to go Pete.

Thank you SBF. I use a locally owned hardware store to make my hoses. It is a much longer drive to find a good selection of pre-made hoses.

From the factory the hoses on our rake were pretty poor. Most were seeping and making a mess so I finally got tired of it and replaced them all except one. Now that one is leaking. Should have done them all right away. I never knew Vermeer's had a twist in the belts.

The old hoses had bumps/ridges on them. I figure that's from the wires in the hose rusting out. Yes, the two narrow belts are twisted so chaff can escape.

My 505L system (spring and cylinder on each side) has to be checked for over charge by reconnecting the hoses and cycling the cylinders several times, mark the rods at fully closed with a permanent marker. Then when opening the gate, you stop immediately when the pressure guage just starts to move. You should have about 3/4" to 1" of cylinder rod extension from the mark. If less, remove a little fluid at the pressure gauge fitting....maybe 1 oz at a time until you get 1" movement.

So I noticed my gauge isn’t working properly so I replaced it and recharged the system and it still shows zero hydraulic pressure

It went pretty well once I had hoses on it that wouldn't bust!

Why are 2 of the belts flipped on your baler? Is there a benefit? I can’t seem to find any info about it on the internet. Thank you!

The dealer tells me this is so chaff from behind the belts can escape.
