Another consideration: Heavenly endorsements. The only Marian apparition endorsement of the Little Office that I know of was one to the Carthusian monks at La Grande Chartreuse. The monks were going through such a difficult time that they were considering disbanding. Our Lady appeared and told them that if they recited the Little Office in addition to the regular daily office, she would strengthen them in the combat. They were eager to do this, and they are there to this day. She did not request praying the Little Office to any other Order nor to laymen, although the various Third Orders usually have recitation as part of their daily duties. The Rosary has been advocated in many visions, especially at Fatima, and Sister Lucia has stated that there is no problem whatever that cannot be solved by praying the Rosary. St. Louis de Montfort mentions a number of apparitions (although these have not been officially endorsed by the Church, but are allowed worthy of belief).

That would be fantastic to research. There are a few mentions of supernatural encouragements in Ethelred Taunton's Treatise of the Little Office - a monastery which wanted to simplify their rule by skipping the Little Office, but was overtaken by a series of disasters, so reinstated the Little Office again. Not an apparition, and could just be coincidence.

I try to pray 15 decades of the Rosary daily. If I only pray 10 decades, then the next day I have to pray the 5 that I missed plus the 15. This way, I force myself not to get too behind. I would like to incorporate the little office that I own while still praying 3 Rosaries daily. I'm just not sure how to do it in a way that I won't give up on.

SSPX have a book called Rosary Warfare which includes chants for the Rosary. Of course the book isn’t strictly approved by the Church so lacks Imprimatur etc. But is very faithful with beautiful images and meditations, Scripture and as mentioned the chants. Despite lacking the Mysteries of Light naturally and from someone who attends Novus Ordo Mass the Rosary Warfare book by SSPX is my favourite Rosary book.

The Holy Rosary is the Office of us with simple faith. I also believe the Rosary should become a joined liturgical prayer. Mass and Office are united to the body and prayers of the church. I believe the Rosary should hold the same liturgical position as the the Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) of course the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass still is fundamentally the most powerful and should always take spot #1. I really think the importance of the Rosary should be ramped up more and more. We laity have a powerful weapon at our fingertips the saints have nothing but a glowing recommendation and encouragement for praying the Holy Rosary. I would argue for some laity that it is better than the Divine Office if they pray the rosary depending on the individual and their spirituality, personality and which they find fits them better. Thanks for sharing. God bless.
@VeronicaBrandt
@VeronicaBrandt Жыл бұрын
I don't think the Rosary can really hold the same position as the Divine Office, but with all the indulgences attached it is very powerful. Also, it is so much more accessible and certainly lends itself to praying together and praying together with people is blessed by Jesus saying He is there in our midst. I agree that you could make a case for the rosary being better than the office - it's better to say the Rosary well than to say the Office badly. And in a group there is more scope for irritating people by pushing the boundaries - better to keep it simple for the sake of peace.

Great video, thank you. If you don’t mind, could you please explain what the difference is between the Brown Scapular, Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Consecration to Mary? Can one do all three? Are they compatible? It seems it would be impossible to do them all for a person with a full-time job, children etc. Could you please clarify this? Thank you!!!
@VeronicaBrandt
@VeronicaBrandt Жыл бұрын
They are very much all compatible with each other. Singing all of the Little Office everyday is tricky with a full-time job and children, but you can just do part. Reading the prayers in English is quicker too. Pick one hour and pray that each day. As I understand it, the Consecration to Mary is a prayer you renew each year. St Louis de Montfort's recommends 33 days preparation for Total Consecration. His plan is arduous, but not impossible. Many other writers have made easier plans. You could follow and easier one this year, then next year, when it's time to renew the consecration, consider whether to follow a more rigorous plan. You don't have to do the 33 days each year though. When you're enrolled in the Brown Scapular, the priest enrolling you can (and often does) reduce the obligation to say the Little Office down to saying the rosary each day. Some of my kids had it reduced down to saying one decade a day. I'm not sure if you can change the obligation once you're enrolled. I was enrolled ages when I was little, so I can't remember if it was mentioned at the time. Wearing the Brown Scapular is pretty easy. My Benedictine oblate friend is married with kids and she talks to her spiritual director about how much of the Office she can manage. From memory she aims for a bit in the morning and Compline at night. If you were going to make a promise to pray the whole Little Office every day, then you'd want to clear it with a spiritual director. As layfolk, we can coast along, just picking up what we can handle at the time and adjusting it as we go. There's more merit to making a promise, but also it's much more demanding, and you need to fulfil your daily duties of your state in life first.

Hi Veronica! Would you consider making a series of videos on the Little Office (from Baronius Press) pronounced in "regular speech" instead of sung? I see you've made videos in chant, and although that is very nice, a quick paced regular speech version could be quite popular. It would be a useful tool for memorizing the hours and ensuring I'm saying the Latin words properly. Respectfully, Searching the Archives

I had an old breviary which said the Sancrosanctae et individuae prayer for the end of the office which the addition of a Pater noster and an Ave said all kneeling will forgive you of all the flaws "due to human wretchedness" which happened during the praying of the office. Also on page 209 of the blue book it says Pope Leo Xiii gave a plenary indulgence once a month to those who say the whole office, but I'm not sure if this is still in effect.
@VeronicaBrandt
@VeronicaBrandt 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, all the Little Office books I have include that prayer. I haven't got into the habit of saying it regularly, but I do say it (kneeling) when things are quiet and peaceful around here. Which is probably when I least need it. As I understand it, the Pope has the authority to update the indulgences, so it does seem to have lost that indulgence, though the new rules give a plenary indulgence every day for lots of things, so hopefully it all evens out. As a liturgical prayer it is very efficacious, especially if you're required to pray it by joining an order. It would be great to see how it all works out in the Economy of Salvation.

My understanding is that liturgical prayer like the Little Office is preferable because you are saying the prayer of the whole Church whereas the rosary is only a private devotion. That said, I think not many people are praying the same 1962 Little Office words these days, so it's not today a common prayer of the whole Church. I pray it though, knowing that I'm praying the same words with the SSPX tertiaries who are bound to pray it, some trad Franciscans as well as those of Church Triumphant and Church Suffering who learned it in the past and would still be using it. I switched to Little Office of BVM, from the LoTH, after I saw the name of Annibale Bugnini in the front of the LoTH books and recoiled! Never again! I've not figured out how people are getting the rosary done in 15 minutes unless they are cutting out everything except the 50 Ave Marias and the 5 Pater Nosters. It's very common for priest to say there is no excuse not to pray it since it only takes 15 minutes, but one would be racing to do that. We do the Credo, as well as the introductory FHC beads as well as the doxology and Fatima prayer on each decade. We never get it done in less than 25 minutes even moving quickly; no matter whether we use Latin or English it's never done in 15 minutes. Sometimes in SSPX chapel they get around the rosary in 20 minutes if the leaders are going through rapidly in chorus as one part of a First Saturday Marian devotion hour, but not even they can do it in 15 minutes.

Yes, that's what I thought, that the little Office was more liturgical. Seeing the music in the Antiphonale Romanum seemed to reinforce this - it was in the official books. I don't have whatever the current official books are, but seeing modern versions of the Little Office are so drastically changed, I doubt it would be in there. Our family needs a half hour to say the rosary. We have a particularly speedy fellow who leads the rosary before Saturday morning Mass, and I think he gets closer to the 15 minute mark, but I agree that it's usually longer.

If you’re using a scriptural rosary I’m certain the variety percentages would be more comparable. Not going to take the time to calculate it though. Maybe a good question for chat gpt later. Question though. I’ve seen seemingly reputable websites say the Divine office is an authorized substitute for the priests. Do I need my priests permission to sub the divine office for the LOBVM? I haven’t seen any mention of that for the laity. The “divine office” app makes it so easy to follow & sing along as I don’t have anyone with a decent voice to sing along with. I pray while driving and at work and while with my kids running wild as I often don’t seem to have 20-30 minutes to set aside throughout the day.
@VeronicaBrandt
@VeronicaBrandt 2 ай бұрын
It is definitely a challenge to find the time. I didn't think we need permission to say the little office or the Divine office. If you are under a spiritual director then that's someone you can ask. Being able to listen while driving is very handy. I was doing that for a while with little office vespers. That's a good point about a scriptural rosary. I saw a book promoting a Gregorian chant rosary with antiphons for each decade, which might not have as many words, but it's another idea.

Liturgical - i.e., of the Church's public - prayer ranks above individual prayers. Having stated that, the Rosary is perhaps the most popular non-liturgical prayer in the Latin Rite and recommended by Popes, saints, and of course Mother herself. It is not a question of either or but of both if one can. My journey was Rosary recited in family and then led to the Little Office of Our Lady (currently that of the Immaculate Conception). Lovely children already with the aussie accent. May they live and prosper!

Great video Veronica. I recently watched something which said that it was quicker to pray the full 15 decades in St Louis' time as he was only saying the first half, (Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed... fruit of they womb) Do you think praying the Rosary in this manner is acceptable today, or should we stick to praying the later half as well? It was lovely seeing the girls at the end!
@VeronicaBrandt
@VeronicaBrandt 2 жыл бұрын
The children at Fatima were taking a short cut with the Rosary, only saying the words "Ave Maria" and Our Lady corrected them on that, instructing them to say the whole thing. Looking at the Catholic Encyclopedia, the "Holy Mary" part was a later addition: "Indeed the writer is informed that within living memory it was not uncommon for Irish peasant, when bidden to say Hail Marys for a penance, to ask whether they were required to say the Holy Marys too." www.newadvent.org/cathen/07110b.htm I'd go with praying both halves. It's pretty well entrenched, though it's not bad in itself to pray just the Angelic Salutation. If it helps someone who would otherwise find the Rosary too long, then that sounds like a bonus.
@CatholicK5357

If I may offer some thoughts on your question. A lot of times modern day scholarship is based on lack of evidence for something rather than proof of it not being done. The idea that the second half of the Hail Mary was not practiced earlier on is based on it being officially brought in by a Church council later in Church history. However, councils usually only officialize prayers and devotions that have naturally been brought forth by the faithful. There are examples of people adding the second half of the Hail Mary quite early on, it just was not universal. It began as an answer to a heresy where people claimed Mary could not be the Mother of God, but only the Mother of Christ's human nature. The prayer was in response to that. It does take longer. But the Holy Ghost encouraged the Church to add this to the prayer. By reciting the second half, you are asking for the Mother of God to intercede for sinners and especially at the our of death. In that sense, it is a wonderful act of charity. Many people have said on their death beds that they did not fear their end because they asked the Mother of God to help at their death 150 times a day for so many years. It would not be wrong to only pray the first half. But it is certainly beneficial to pray the whole thing. What you could do is pray the whole thing for the five decades of the day, and then do the shorter for the other mysteries. It is also the case that the rosary has even more merit today due to the darkness of the times. In other words, we have more graces attached to any prayer. The most important thing is to pray. So whatever your decision, if guided by the heart of prayer, I'm sure God will bless it.

Thank you for such good information. A few suggestions: 1. try to minimize all the hand motions. Very distracting, especially when you're using auto ISO on your camera. 2. Use a fixed manual ISO. If you do the video image will be stable. In contrast, if you use auto ISO the light on the screen will keep changing as you move your hands in and out of the screen image. You can see a LOT of it in the images in this video. How to correctly set your ISO. Start with auto ISO, with you in the screen. Ask someone to see what the ISO setting is: 400 or 650, etc. If the auto ISO is, let's say, 650, then remove the auto ISO setting with a fixed, manual 650. That way you'll get very good exposure, but the light image won't be shifting as you move your hands over the screen, and your videos will look more professional and less distracting. thanks again.

@avarmadillo
@avarmadillo 2 жыл бұрын
@@VeronicaBrandt Photography and video are two different animals. Your auto ISO is electronic exposure. It "sees" to total amount of light in your VIDEO image and changes as the scene changes. Your hands in constant movement is enough to cause these changes in exposure controlled by your automatic ISO. All you have to do to correct these shifts in exposure is to get a constant, unchanging ISO setting. Just get it off "auto." Photographers don't really have this problem because they are only shooting one frame per photo. Shooting video you are shooting 24 or 30 frames a second. ghzg all connect to make the moving image. Photographers are often called "stills shooters." Video shoots moving images, not isolated still images. Your camera is good. It keeps you well in focus, and the colors look fine. It's the electronic exposure shifting that is disturbing the image as you move around--especially the hand shifting in and out of the frame. Set the ISO on manual, give it s fixed setting so it can't shift and you'll look great! I promise. On your camera screen you have an exposure meter that will show if you're correctly exposed when the meter dial points to "zero." Shoot in M--manual. Not in P Progressive. If you're in P Progressive it could be all three of your exposure tools (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO) are all three shifting. Get to M (manual). Set your shutter speed to 24 or 30 fps, set your lens aperture to whatever, 2.8 or3.5, and then adjust your ISO up or down to get the exposure meter on the screen to set at "0" when you are on the screen. THEN your exposure will not shift and change as you move on screen. You're probably shooting auto white balance. In studio that's doing a good job, because the color of the light is not shifting. No problem. But, my point here, is it may be likely that your Photo people may not be much help. All i shoot is video. I know what I'm talking about after shooting video for about 15 years.

There are different opinions and I know that often miraculous things that seem unbelievable turn out to be supported by new evidence as time goes on. There were prayers like the Rosary before St Dominic, like the Orthodox prayer ropes, which also have similarities to the Divine Office, as I understand it. This article seems like a balanced treatment: rosarycenter.org/the-rosary-and-st.-dominic Here is a little from the conclusion: "It seems to me, not merely possible, but very probable, that the Mother of God (as Alan de Rupe testified) did use St. Dominic in some way to give this devotion to the Church. One source of misconception in this regard is religious art, which portrays St. Dominic receiving from Our Lady the Rosary such as we use today. This would not have been. But then, if artists are to portray this tradition, how else would they do it?" Looking forward to finding out more in the life to come!

Thank you for this helpful video. Please explain what you mean by unique words and provide some examples. I'm assuming that they are words that are not repeated for more than a certain number of times but how is this defined exactly? I wonder how this gets measured too.

@@seppe1701 Ah, I remember now. Yes, I can't remember exactly what tools I used but there are online tools to count unique words - like this one: caerphoto.com/uwc/ Just now I had a go at pasting in the texts and still get about 200 unique words for the Rosary and 1500 unique words for the Little Office. That was using English translations just now. I'm not sure if I used the Latin or English for the original video.

@@VeronicaBrandt thanks. Is that how many words that appear once only? Thus, praying Hail Mary many times over means there are no unique words. I'm just trying to understand how this measured. A book of psalms may include repeated words but a variety of sentences. I can see how the repeated prayers of the Rosary becomes less unique, though the sentences of the meditations are the unique parts. The less unique parts of the Little Office would include the opening prayers or repeated prayers. Same for the ordinary of the Mass, with the proper and its readings being the unique parts. Perhaps there is more variety to the Novus Ordo's prayers than TLM, but more uniqueness to the way the TLM is prayed - more actions and meaning to it. It's got me thinking!

Yes, it's not the best measure of how valuable either is, but looking at the ways I was comparing the two I tried to find ways to describe the differences. I remember someone, who was accustomed to praying the Liturgy of the Hours, tried celebrating the feast of the Holy Rosary (12 Oct I think?) by substituting the Rosary for all the times when he would usually pray the Hours. He found he missed all the different thoughts expressed in the Liturgy of the Hours. I guess being involved in statistics and computers I went for a clunky way to measure this. Now I'm thinking the number of unique words is the more valuable measure rather than the percentage - but on the other hand, being able to have the prayers in memory is an advantage too, which is made more difficult with the variety of words and sentences.
