So glad you let the kids experience trail riding and all that comes along with it. When something minor happened like the crow hops, you don’t freak out, which would, in turn teach the kids to be afraid when anything like that happens. Don't feel bad about the laughing. When there is stress, you have to relieve that stress and sometimes it eases up in a variety of ways - laughing being one of them. When I got married, I guess I was nervous because I laughed during the ceremony. Just prior to the ceremony, the chapel people ask you about everything you want for your ceremony. Well, we were just there to get married and all of those questions was like having to make wedding plans all within five minutes before you go in the chapel to be married. When they asked us if we wanted music, hubby goes, "HUH?" Then he asked how much that cost and then quickly told them that we could live without music. For everything you want during the ceremony, it costs something more. Now who wouldn't laugh after an experience like that. Wedding, all plans made in five minutes before you actually get married. No, I would not exactly advise anyone to do it that way.

When she said when anything bad happens I seem to laugh, I do 2. An example of that is literal yesterday, my friend and I were riding out hobby horses and she jumped a big bush, she didn’t stride it right and she ended up falling and I tried 2 hold in a laugh but then she started laughing and I couldn’t stop myself. 😂

I wasn’t too concerned since the minis are only 30 some inches tall and we’d only be walking and trotting with my husband and I being on really solid horses. My kids are learning how to fall off without it being “scary”. Watching a kid fall off a big horse makes my heart sink, but the little horses are pretty comical in the right situation.

Versatile Horsemanship Funny story, the first and only time I took my son trail riding he was on a rock solid quarter horse mare, but my son had no experience at all. She started trotting and he couldn’t slow her down. They went around a turn and by the time I caught up, she was eating grass and my son was on the ground lol. He had slid off going around the corner. So ever since that I’m so paranoid letting them have control of a horse on their own lol.

One very, very, important safety message to get out when children are riding on trail rides with small horse or ponies n that is to not get close to the big horse that they are following. I ride a lot of trail rides n it’s so dangerous for a child on a pony to get close behind a big horse. It’s not necessary dangerous if the horse n pony know each other, but when u have strange horses n riders riding with u, children won’t think n ride up behind a big horse n the big horse will kick out with both feet at the pony. With the pony being small the big horse will kick over the pony n hit the child on the pony in the face. I have seen it happen more than once.

Barbara Greene yes that is very scary and I wouldn’t recommend that young children ride with anyone but a very experienced adult. We keep our kids close to our horses, but I’ve spent countless hours getting these kids and horses comfortable and prepared for this situation. I would never allow my child to ride this close to another horse. My kids will exclusively ride with me until I feel they are ready to ride with others.

A back cinch or girth helps really well with the saddles going up same with bucking, it helps u not fall of better, because when the pony or horse bucks it pops you in the butt and gets u out of the saddle.

In this case, the only thing that was going to keep the saddles in place properly is a crupper and a well fitting breast collar. A rear cinch will help the back of the saddle from popping up, but not when the whole set up is sliding around. I bought one new saddle, had breast collars and cruppers custom made to fit these minis since I filmed this video. They fit about as good as a saddle is going to fit these rollie pollies. Brenda Swanson all the horses on my property are barefoot. If we lived in an area with very rocky ground or had to be on asphalt regularly, then I would put shoes on them. But they do great in our area.
