I’m 5”9 138 I finished 3 1/2 weeks before getting sick. Idk what my vert was before but I was only able to touch the rim with the ball. After the 3 1/2 weeks I was able to get the ball over the rim off two but couldn’t finish. Based off your video your explosion doesn’t seem hard enough and your jump technique could use work. I say go through it again and you’ll have even more bounce. Btw I’m starting again tomorrow so we’ll see if I can finally finish a dunk. Thanks for the review, although i strongly feel the urge to point out that the reason that prevented you from gaining vertical is your poor technique performing the exercises, i noticed how unexplosive and weak your jumps were, the exercises videos provided in the vert shock program cleared every detail about how the exercises should be done, i finished 6 weeks before having to stop due to exams and i gained about 28 cm of vertical. It should be easier to get back to a height you've jumped already than to break P.B's. Vert Shock should come with maintenance exercises, which are a reduced version of the full program that you have to do each week to maintain. It might be worth repeating weeks 1-4 again and then taking a few of the best exercises and including them in your normal weekly workouts. As I said at 8:46 the exercises I found most useful were Tuck Jumps, Lateral High Jumps and Depth Jumps, so that's a good place to start.

9to5Strength did you give it your all and do all of it correctly? Were you sour during the 8 weeks? If you give it your half all you wont be sour which means you won't gain more than 5 inches. If you don't do it correct then you won't get an inch on your vertical. I was very intense during this workout and made sure I did all of it correctly. I gained 15 inches. Im very pleased with my results and i went from barely touching backboard to dunking. Im 12 and 5 foot 10.
@9to5strength5 жыл бұрын
Wow good results! It took me a while to realise "sour" meant sore :-) I did try my hardest, a few people are saying I don't look explosive but my legs aren't very springy (which is why I wanted to do a jumps program) so that's what me giving 100% looks like. I'm not arguing that it's not possible to get good results, I'm saying people who are going to gain 15 inches will do so on many different jump programs, and Vert Shock promising that everyone can dunk is false advertising.
@coralinamz60505 жыл бұрын
@@9to5strength well maybe you didn't get the results because your older or you already work out with your legs enough so they are used to all the training. I made sure I was out of shape before doing this workout to make my legs gain more muscle easier. And by the way I didn't gain 15 inches on the programs I did. I began doing jumping progams about 1 year and a half ago. i was doing jump manual ( gained 7 inches) and doing air alert which improved by 2 inches. Before I started doing those programs I believe I had a 12 inch vertical. I completed those workout had a 21 inch vertical. Then completed vert shock after 2 months of doing jump manual and air alert. Gained 15 inches. ( Now I have 36 inch vertical). I think about 60% of people who do this progam can dunk afterwards. So yes, it is false advertising. Oh and what's your vertical NOW?

Yeh I thought so too, most of the research leaned towards expressions of power as better indicators of a high vert than raw strength on its own, but it's not like i'm grinding out these squats. If you check out page 3 of this paper www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1724821/pdf/v038p00285.pdf you can see guys with a 180-200kg half squat are hitting around a 60cm CMJ.
@Xanalu6 жыл бұрын
I don’t think strength is really the key component to jumping high , more like explosiveness and force compared to your bodyweight or something . I can only squat about 315 for a single and deadlift about 345lbs max. But I can dunk at 5’10” tall 170lbs , I’d say I don’t have great genetics either .
@9to5strength6 жыл бұрын
I agree, as long as you have a good baseline then going from 2x BW to 2.5x BW will do very little compared to improving RFD. Do you have a 1RM in either the power clean or hang power clean? I can do about 90kg (200lbs) and i'm trying to get that up around 100-105kg to see what effect that has on vert.
@Xanalu6 жыл бұрын
9to5Strength if I can recall correctly , my power clean was actually weak. I think my 1rm was around 155 lbs . Compared to a friend who was doing 245lbs I still out jumped him. Actually doesn’t make sense now that I think about it, power cleans are an explosive movement shouldn’t he jump higher?
@Xanalu6 жыл бұрын
9to5Strength I think you have to have both strength (squats, deadlifts, box squats) and explosive movements (plyos,hangs,Snatches) . For a maxed out vertical, I did squat and deadlift more than him but for explosive movements such as hang cleans and power cleans he’d outlift me . I still generate the higher jump, that’s the part that confuses me.

Hey after week 2 i gained about 2 inches and after week 1 I even had my first "dunk" (bounced on the rim) (im 6 foot, 24.5"inch vert btw) but at the end of week 3 and after I played an intense pick up game with some friends I had some back pain every time i stepped on my left foot. I think that it is most probably due to the times when I test my vertical as i test it very frequently after workouts or pick up games, I am also a one foot (left) jumper (which explains why I have pain when I step on my left). Any advice or recommendation (it doesn't hurt a lot but definitively disturbs me). I plan on taking a rest week (as I think I'll gain more with proper rest).
@9to5strength6 жыл бұрын
Hey, i'm not an expert in diagnosing injuries but I had back pain early on because I wasn't concentrating on landing properly. Either doing vert tests or early on in my depth jumps I would put all the focus on a great jump and then kind of switch off and land a little awkwardly. If that sounds like you then that's possibly it, otherwise your body might not cope with a sudden increase in training volume. Either way, rest sounds like a plan :-)

Hey I am amused by the fact that our size & measures are almost identical: 177 cm, 70 kg, my standing reach is a little more, while your 140 kg for squat series (not your maximum, correct?) are much more than mine. But hey, at 0:14 you look like using the support to bounce up. That's too easy! :-D With the leg strength required to regularly squat twice your bodyweight, and your slim shape, it's so strange that you're not flying well over the rim without the need for additional plyo. I must say I share someone's opinion in the comments that you do not look like pushing yourself much while doing the exercises. Speaking as a volleyball player, I'd add that your jump technique is wrong: your final step is slow (you look like 'dropping' on your 2 feet rather than exploding up from the ground) and your arm swing is weird. Your palms face down instead of up. I am going through Vert Shock and I will post my results here. Being your same size, let's see if I get the same. Hope a little bit more!
@ky71736 жыл бұрын
Looks like I am having a false start. I started Vert Shock because I felt a tiny pain in the right leg during regular weight lifting. So I wanted to allow the leg some relief without stopping the training. What better than plyo? I am now in week 2 but the small pain is not going away, so I it is safer to stop plyo too until the leg is fully healed. The season has started and it makes little sense to push myself to a point where a small pain becomes an issue. I will do only upper body, and then re-start Vert Shock later. This 'trial' allowed me to experience the workouts and I liked them. :-)

@@rowbott So I completed the Vert Shock, did not train legs for a week and then tested my jump again. As expected, the total gain for the entire program is a mere 3 cm. :-) Notice: I am an experienced guy (43 YO), played soccer and then volleyball for long, always trained hard. My suggestion to you is that Vert Shock will work more if you are young (14-25) AND untrained. The older you are, and the fitter you are when you start, the lesser you will gain from it. I realized after the first weeks that VS is focused on only one aspect of jumping (elasticity), so I added intense pre-workout, intense core training post-workout, more training days. So my small gain is not even totally from Vert Shock. :-) Overall, VS is not that good on its own. It becomes a good option if you are young, untrained, want something easy, short and cheap. Let's call it a starting point. Your best option will be a training program that touches all the main aspects of jumping: leg strenght, core strenght, elasticity, speed, form. That will activate your potential AND increase it. You will need weight lifting and more than just eight weeks.

How's this possible lol? I'm basically one week into this program, after 3 years of not touching basketball. And in that 1 week, I basically gained like 80% from my training back then which I trained for more than a year... I mean, right now obviously I can't get back all my explosiveness and vertical like before cause back then I used to do only gym workouts. Squats, legs press, and all that. Simply said, no plyo workout. So yeah, based on this VertShock, they do push my muscles and help with the elasticity. For now I'm not gonna give up, I'll complete this whole Vert Shock and when I'm done, I'll re-do it again and manage the schedule by including weight training in it, emphasizing on legs press, squats, and seated calf raises.(for explosiveness) Trust me, it will work. And I don't really measure my vert inches but as of now, I could get half of my wrist above the 10ft rim, add 1-2 inches and it'll be my old vertical from back then. But yea, I know that this is not the only thing you need to follow to increase vertical, you still need side workouts, and proper diet, even proper technique on jumping that I have to polish again. Back then I had the perfect technique, and I can do dunk with one hand. Now I just need to fix my technique over time.

I tried to buy vert shock but it didn’t confirm my payment. Does anyone know why?
Very constructive video, I strongly agree to your standpoint. When I first saw the excersises I didn't believe that I would gain anything from doing these. It looked too easy, and there is only plyometrics and no strength training involved. If you are willing to spend your money to increase your vertical jump whether you play volley ball or basketball try the PJF Performance program. Its cost less than a $1 per day and there is a program for weights and non weights program and PJF also provides a basketball handles program. Watch the intro of the program and see if you like it. Overall the video was informative and I am very fond of your opinion on the *TrashShock*

If you are doing the vertshock program and you are not improving with results, please stop doing the program! You will only gain 1-3 inches in 8 weeks hence the advertisement saying that you will gain 9-15 "Guaranteed". If you are willing to spend your money and work relentlessly to improve your vertical jump, please check out this program called PJF Performance. I'm 5'7 (16 years of age) and I weigh 67kg (147lbs) with a gain of 8 inches in 10 weeks. The program is not an 8 week period, it is 1 year is 1 volume. Can I please use 6 minutes of your time to watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKHSZHRpmNKWqc0

This is really useful thanks and a great exposure of overpromising and failing to deliver. I've just bought it because I'm on lockdown like the rest of us, but I think I am going to continue with it. Let me know if you think it would be useful to add weights sessions to build more power because I feel like there's a limit to what plyometrics can do scientifically. It's sort of designed to activate those fast twitch muscle fibres. If the key muscles aren't there/are used to relying on other muscles for power, how much activation can really happen. Doesn't appear like you did the Jump like Justin optional workouts that work on technique, although this might be a little harsh. I would have expected better technique to an attempt that was going on youtube. Search videos of less athletic nba players like JJ Redick dunking and you'll see he also goes off two feet but he carries his momentum. Btw, a standing vert of 24.8 inches is well above the average for a man of 31. A quick look at any of the nba draft combines from recent years shows that your explosiveness of two feet would not be laughed at among primed athletes who have been training their whole lives for those moments, and with all of the equipment and mentorship that you do not have. stats.nba.com/draft/combine-strength-agility/?sort=STANDING_VERTICAL_LEAP&dir=1&SeasonYear=2010-11

Hey, yeh having done more programs I feel bad for not spending longer on my jump technique. I didn't appreciate how much of a difference it makes and assumed jumping high was all down to being springy/explosive. There are rough minimum strength standards where getting stronger will have the biggest impact on your jumps. If you can't squat 1.5x your body-weight then you could add in weights, as you say power is the ability to express strength in a short amount of time, so without the requisite strength you're limiting yourself.

so if vert shock isn’t worth it then what should i do??
@9to5strength4 жыл бұрын
If money's no object I'm doing Vert Code Elite right now and it's a great program. You can get hold of Vertical Jump Bible for free online and the workouts in there seem sensible. In general I get the impression that going out and practising how to jump will be really beneficial, and a plyometrics program is better once you've spent at least a few weeks getting the most out of improving jump technique

I feel like some people need to spend a little bit of money to get motivated. Yeah you can go research and spend time finding what to do. Or you could spend a little bit of money and get everything you need to do in a package.

First off umm did you see the part on their website where they say results may very and that inexperienced jumpers will see more results. If you can squat twice your body weight and can’t jump well what is this program going to do. Second what about jumping off one leg. I’m 15 and can get rim off one leg 6’2”. Third how old are you. I don’t want to sound rude but your body may be starting to decline.
@peytonpowers56415 жыл бұрын
You also don’t think you said what your start vert. Was at the start only your squat. It’s like your trying to hate on this program.

at 00:01:55 you are doing that seated box jump.. You are not jumping at your maximum.. You should Jump and with the jumps stretch and enlongate your whole body.. but you are bending your neck and back and just push your knees up as high as possible... so you give the wrong signals to your body and get a bad muscle memory

@9to5strength5 жыл бұрын
The post-shock phase is just days 2, 3 and 5 from week two written as days 1,2,3 in week 8, then repeated on days 5,6,7. He just changes the rest to the lower end of each time window e.g. 90-120 secs becomes 90 secs. He also adds one set to Uphill sprints and one set to Uphill squat jumps on days 3 & 7.

You don't need vert shock! Just do jump squats, calf raises, jump rope, high jump, 1 leg jump and 2 leg jump. 4 days a week. Or you can add some weight for serious results

what about air alert does it work
@9to5strength6 жыл бұрын
Haven't heard of it before but I've just looked up Air Alert 4 and it doesn't look too promising. The exercises seem sensible but the idea of increasing number of jumps instead of making sure the intensity is there in each jump is flawed. It's building jumping endurance, so if you didn't injure yourself doing so many jumps you would find you can do twice as many jumps at a certain height before getting tired, but it doesn't make your best jump much higher. It's the same as if someone bench pressed a 20kg bar and just kept adding more and more reps, if the goal is a better max. effort then you need intensity (more weight) not volume.
